6 FINANCIAL AND CO AMERCIAL. | MONHY MARKET. Monpar, Jan. 28—6 P. M. The improvement ia prices reported at the clore of the | market on Saturday was not visibe at the opening this morning, At the first board Nicaragua Transit declined 36 por cent; Brumswisk City, i; Evie Railroad, 4; Read: — (ng Railroad, 1; Michigan Central, %; Tarlem, 4; Cleve- (aod and Toledo, i; Cleveland and Pittsburg, L Galons | and Chicago Railroad advanced 2 per csai, and only abou! 230 shares were sold at the advance. The p-iacipal | movement to-day was in Erie und Reading. Nicaragua | ‘Transit was comparatively quiet. Witnin the pas? three | hey orfour wesks all sorts of reports have brea circulated rela- tiveto the amalgamation of the Nicaragua Transit and the Pacific Mai! Steamship Companies, thove statements have emanated from parties who have la-g? juantities of stock which they canuot carry, and will soon ve compelled to put upon the market. The two compaules are sa distinct im their operations as it 18 possible to conselve, and 20 agveement has been entered into between them. Boh companies are doing well enough alone. It is our opinion that the stock of either company isa good inves:m:nt at present prices, and that by and by Nicaragua Transit will command mue) higher prices; bat in the meantime some of the largest holders must sell, and that may tem- porarily depress the market value. Com:nodore Vander- dilt has assumed the agency, and fa th» proper time such changes will be made in ‘he internal acministration as may be required. If the Commodore would assume the presidency we should have hopes of a more spsody restoration of the oredit of the company. According to this cal- culation, the surplus on band om the lst of May next will be more than double that of the came dave last year; and it appears that this company, notwithstending its | iarge dividends, adds largely to its surplus every year, ‘The suryplns, after the psymeut of divideads aud all reser- vaticna at the close of each of the past six fiscal years, has bieo as follows: May 1, 185¢-Sus $1,153 '1, 1853-Sur 433, ne ae ae ree try ae ae 0 1 SC (tT? It must be borre in mind that our estimate for the fiscal yeac ond- ing Mey 1, 1857, is based upon the net receipts no larger than those of the previous year. Should the increase be anything like that of every year previous, the productive- ress of this road would be pertestiy fabulous. The an- nexed table, from the Chicago Times of January 22, showing the receipts of wheat, flour, corn and ests at that port, in each of the part three years, gives a pretty wood idea of the quantity of produce transported east ward over the Galena and Chicagy Railroad. When we first presented tothe public a full exposé o the New York Certral Railroad consolidation schome, the columns of the Albany organs of that rotten an cor- rupt corporation teemed with all sorts of personal abuse No one of the charges we made against the company was xefnted, and not the first fact was presented in arguueat for the purpose of disproving cur statements. It ap- peared to them pertectly horrible that a public journa should presume to question the honor or integrity of snch men as conceived and carrisd through that great financial measure. They no doubt were astonished, when they thought all the iniquity of that a:t had beoa buried in oblivion, to see ali ity secrets, ali the means resorted to, all the moi operandis, 0 thoroughly and so conclu- sively exposed, and their astonishment foumd vent at the time, in the application of those epitheta which the Al- bavy Journal so frequently subst! vutes for fair argument. A plainer, more distinct and straightforward statement of facta was never placed ou record than we gave them. We charged that the act was a scheme of freni, con cocted by the political stock gamblers snd harpies o Albany, de-igned for the benefit o! the few, to the detriment of the great mass cf holders and would remain the icrero- cable curse of the State—that it wan carried throug’ the Legislature with unblashing and enormous bribery, and was crammed down the throu!s of the gceat mass of stockhollera by means of the mort cutrageous dezeption opening of spring, and reach Piymouth early in the sum- mer. There ix a proposition before the Legi-latare of Penn- sylvania, and Likely to become a law, authorizing the construc ion of e railrosd commencicg at a polrt near the janolion of the Lebanon Valley and Philadelphia aad Reading ratlronds, in the city of Reading aud to run to any point on the railroad of the Lehigh Valley Company, within the counties of Lehigh or Northampton. The capi tal stock of the company is to be $40,000, with the privilege, from time to time, by vote of the stockhold ers, to increase the sum to an amount sufficient to com- pete theroad. The bill calls for the commencement of the road within five years, and requires its completion within ten years. The market value of Galena and Catcago Rullroad stock hae already attracted a new class ot buyers. This morn ing it was the only one on the list showing an improve ment, and very little was offered for sale The financial operations of this company during the pat six months have shown itsenormons resources, and its earnings have shown its immense productiveness. We give the esti- mated net income of the road for the year ending May I, 1866, for the purpese of refreshing the public mind, and duswing the attention of those Wie may, in these doubt- ful times, be looking about for something to invest their money in, where it will not only yield a large income, but whore tt will be perfectly #afe:— GALBNA AND CHICAGO Rampoan, | hen the consolidation was completed, leaving the de- and humbug. The policy adopted for months before the consolidation induced an utter neglect of the roads, and an absurd indation of the stock. We charged that besides buyicg up aseiess roads and branched, and staking ovt imaginary lives and putting them {ato the concern at prices at which certain individua’s made enor mous fortunes, some of the leaders sold out their stock luded, humbugged, swindled srnail fry to sleep in fancied ecurity on (heir imaginary property.
