NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 1866, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL uO x EY MAREB®. Fauvay, Jan. 25—6 P. M. Quotations for stocks took a turn downward this morn- ing, and there appeared to de plenty: of sellers at current Tatts. The decline was universal. Every stock sold ‘brought lower prices. So long as the public mind on this side ef the Atlantis is uo sensitive to fiaansial movements in Eu- Tope, #0 long we shaigbe subject to suddea fluctuations Upom the arrival of every steamer. It may be well ‘emough that it it isvo. These occasional checks are of & salutary character and keep the curreat of commerce healthy. Inthe abeence of all other influences of this ‘character, that emanating from Eurepe jast now is rather desirable than otherwise. We have no fears of ‘anything serious to our local interest growing out of the present position of European affairs. There is never any danger im s contractin of credits or operations. Ne one is dkely to be ruined by doing too little business. ‘The greatest difficulty we have to contend against is doing too much. Asa general thing all classes of traders go beyond thetr means. Our bankicg institutions cannot be depended upon for any regularity of movement. At one time they will be largely expanded and at nother largely eomtracted, and the com mercial conmunity is at ‘all times liable to be sacrificed for the speculating classes. Tt fa, therefore, necessary that we should be contin under the influence of sume conservative power, will impose such restraints as will guaranty steadiness @nd permanence in al! mercantile matters. The real pros- perity of the coumtry would be vastly increased, and in the long run our progress would be as rapid. For the entire period of our existence we have been Gubjest to enormous expansions and sontractions, Fora Gow years every enterprise would be carried forward with the grea wet rapidity and sppsrent success; finally, a re- ‘Valslon would come upon as, 8 collapse soon follow, and @ crash close up the game. Afterwards s year or 40 of Prestretion and inac‘ivity would filiow, and the recovery Would be very gradual with occasional relapses. After the reture of sufficient streng:h, our Progress wou'd be for @ time exceelingly mocera‘e, and a return to Geund health again slow and uncertain. After a Period of eoopomy und i-dustry, the same extravagacce end folly would again seize upon the community, aad the Game reeult be again realised. If we could by any system Of dnames, by any system of creiit, by any legislative Festrictions upon our banking institutions, prevent a re- Gurrence of there commerciai disesters, it would be a Dlessing to the whole coun"ry. We nave a0 conddence im the sense er experieace of injivisuals, Bunness men mever learm wisdom frcm the past. The same spirit of spec- ulation end extravagance which for so mamy years has ron riet in this city, the same desire to branch out into any over railroads, The principal transactions mabing for immeciate shipments are operated by Southern and Southwestern merchants, who forward freely by steam- ers to Mobile, New Orleans, Savannah and Charies. ton. To the latter ports, the steam packets are beginning to go well crowded with freight, which, om ar- rival, is sent to the interior, over the Carolina and Gecrgia railroads, extending into Tennessee, ‘the ova- sumption of dry goods in Tennessee, and particularly the eastern part of it, is likely to be larger than usual this spring, while payments will prove reliable. There is o0 seotion of the Union whose merchan‘s are more souud and more prompt than those of Tennesses. The opening of railroads with East Tennessee sfforded an outlet for am immense quantity of well grown and valaaple wheat, which has sold in this market at high figures through the whole season. While Genesee and Michigan were affected by too much rain, Tennessee red wheat came in early and largely, in sound shipping order, and realized large and remunerative prices; much of it suid above $2, ‘and little that was sound sold under $1 96 per bushel. The shipments of Tennestee wheat have noi probabiy fallen much below one million bushels, for which the growerf will probably receive at least ove million of dol- lars, and will be ins condition to consume iargely of staple dry goods, many of which are now going forward. It may suit the views of an abolition organ like the Independent to puff abolition sections of the interior of this State and of the West as being the great patrons of the dry goods trade, yet we hazard nothiog in saying tha! the greatest support of this trade in New York tas been derived from the producers of our grest staples at the South and Weat, whose exports exceei in value all other parte of the country. It has been this trace which has ared to build up the wealth of the Northern sea- board cities, aud has caused many a palatial store and palace built residence to appear in New York, where the ground would otherwise bave been vacan!. New York is @ national city, and not sectional in ite commerce, and the miserable aad futile attempt of a fanatical organ like the Independent to attempt to rectionalise trade, as well a8 politics, is as contemptible as it is unpatriotic, The suction sales have commenned, but as yet the transso- tions have been cn @ moderate scale, and the stocks of- fering are not very large. They, however, commenced fair; companies of jobbers from some other cities, and the toterior are buying freely. Silk goods continue firm Low qualities are scarce and in g2.d demand; the fizer qualities are also well sustained. The trade ia cloths is om rather @ more exensive scale. The better grate are in gocd request; inferior grades of docakins se!l readily at $136, The trade im clothiers’ goods is to a» fair extent. Importers, though weil stocked with seasonable gwds, are voi pressing them. Domestic goods are steady, @ fair to good trade doing. The new styles of prints opened by the jobbers present much beauty and » great variety of pleasing patterns, displaying much teste and skill on the part of manu‘acturers. Mousselins de laines were in good eup. ply, and with a» limited demand, sales were moderate. Cloths continue to be well supported in prices Cassi meres were easior for fall paterns, which induced » bet- ter trade; while spring s:y'es wore firm and well sus- ‘Wild and reckless enterprise, the same anxiety to exceed each other is the exten: of mercantile transse ‘ions, exists in this community, at this moment, with all the force @nd intensity which have marked former periods of fuan- Clal exeltement, and it is absolutely necessary that there ehould be some power potent euvugh to check that na- tiomal charac‘eristic aod keep all things connected with twade snd commerce in @ sound and healthy oondition. ‘Tho war m Europe ts doing tuat pretty eifectually. So long as that war is vigorous 'y prosecuted, we have no feare of amy wild «pesuia:ion, or any importsat deviation frem that course which guarantees permanency to our Present prosperity. So long as we can preserve the ex- isting eopdition of our tn’ernal affairs, 60 long as the people Gad full employment ana prompt payment, so dong 08 our harvest proves sbundent and produce com- mands good prices, 90 long as all our works of iaternsl improvement continue productive, so lung as the de- Velepement of our reagmrces gues on at the rate realized daring the past year, so loug us the mations of Europe require our breadstufls ana provicions and pay high Prices fer them—so long must our progress be rapid, and the soquisition of wealth and commercial strength be equal to the most sanguine calculatwons. We are con- tent with our pre-ent position. We are not im the midst ‘ef speculation, and have no expanded system of credits. Our trade is legitimate and conducted upon sound prin- @iples. There are no evidences of extravagance, nor is there, om the other hand, a want of the necessaries of life. Every interest is sound at the core, and ten years’ European war would do more to strengthen snd consoli- date our national prosperity tham anything else we know Of Pence is desirable ins personal poiat of view, but @e far os all our great public interes‘s are concerned, the war is likely to reeult more to our advantage. At the second beard the market was om the whole Pretty weil sustained. Erie’ was firm, with large sales, Indiana 6's advanced \ per cent; Beunawick Oty, X, Galena amd Chicago sold a: 105 a 105% per cent, to the extent of 100 shares, for the opening. This isa very low point for that stoct—one that must attract a good many purchasers. A large party stanas rey to come in ani fake all this stock on the market.
