NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. SOsBY MARKET. mapaY, Jan. 8—6 P. M. Considerable excitement existed at the stock board to-day. The bulls appeared in the ascendency, and had ‘things all their own way. Erie, Ni Cumberland, Reeding, Galena and Chicago—in fact, all the leading stecks on the list—were in active demand, at prices show. ing an advance varying from aquarter to one and a half per ceat. The sales of Erie, at the first mounted to neariy ten thousand shares, the bul& of which was for case. The movement in Nicsragua Transit is most extraor- dizary, About three thousacd shares were sold at the first board, opening at 24 and closing at 25 per cent. Reading was in better demand than we have noticed for Feme days, but prices were not sustained to the close. No bing definite is yet known regarding the dividend. It is our opinion that it will not be so large as generally saticipated, but it will be large enough to suit holders ef stock for permanent investment. Western railroad stocks were in moderate demand. The heaviest stock om tae list to-day was Hudson River Railroad. It ‘was the only fancy im which there was no im- provement. At ihe first board Ilinois Central bonds a¢vanced 34 per cent; New York Central 6’s 3; do. 7's, 1; Canton Company, %; Nicaragua Transit, 1; Chicago snd Rogk Island, %; Pennsylvania Coal, %; Cumberlana Coal, 34; Erie Raulroad, %; Harlem, %; Ga- leas and Chicego, 13<; Michigan Southern, 1; New York Central Railroad, 34; Reading, %, but fell back 3 at the lose; Michigan Central Railroad, 134; Cleveland and To- ledo, 1. It appears by this tha: the advance was univer- sal, From this state of things a superficial observer wight suppose that an upward movement of some por- manence waa about being realized. The inflation to-iay has mot a proper basis, There is no demand for stocks @uteide of Wall street, and the probability is that in the event of an expansion in prices of twe or three per cent, the supply of stocks im the street would increase instead ef diminish. Outsiders are not in a condition just now to ‘take bold of stocks, A» the season advances and mer- cantile business commences, we iook for outsiders realiz- ing om thore they now hold, instead of enlarging their supply. About May or June we should not be surprised to seea very important improvement in prices, anda ‘very active movement in all sorts of stocks; but in the meantime, any one engaged in business outside of Wall street will want all the money they can control in their legitimate pursuits. At the second board prices current in the morning were not sustained, and the sales were to some extent at lowse prices. New York Central 6’s declined % per cent; Nicaragua Transit, %; Cumberland, %; Erie, 4; Har- lem, 3; Cleveland and Toledo, : Chieago and Rock Telaad1. A small lot of Milwaukie and Mississippi Railroad stock was sold at 86 per cent, and after the board a lot was sold at 87 per cent, cash. An official announcement will be made of the dividend ina few days. It will be five per cent cash, and five per cent in stock, the latter being the accumulations of the sinking fund invested in the company’s own bonds. After the board 24% was offered for Nicaragua, and 2434 asked. New York Cen- tral Railroad, 92% offered. Galena, 12534 offered, asked. Cumberland, 233 offered, { asked. The market closed dull. The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows :— Paid on treasury account... ... $59,763 42 Received on treasury secount 224629 O1 Balance on treasury aecount, 2,637,701 45 Pid fer assay office..... 3 Paid on cisbursing checks. The Second Auditor of the State of Virginia, in answer toa resolution of the House of Representatives, reports that the registered debt of the State is $11,490,742 03, of which $8,006,243 81 is held in Virginia, $806,089 in other States of the Union, ana $2,678,409 22in Europe. The Commonwealth has issued $13,193,000 of coupon bonds, of which $11,103,000 are payable in the city of New York, aad $1,875,000 in London. The double track of the New Jersey Railroad has been completed from Jersey City to Rahway, and it will be continued to their terminus, at New Brunswick, as soon aa possible, thus farnishing ome of the best equipped Toads of the kind in the world. ‘Am important decision in relation to banks has just been made in the Burlington courts, in which the Med- ford Bank sued David L. Miller to recover the amount of ‘a check paid to Mr. Miller, and afterwards discovered to bea forgery. The bank suffered a non-suit, Judge Potts deciding that a bank must know the signatures of its customers. The New Orieans Canal and Banking Company have de- clared a dividend of five per cent, payable at the Bank of Commerce in this city, on the 4th of February. The Merchants’ Bank of Albany, has declared a semi- naval dividend of four per cent; the Monadnock Mills, Claremont, N. H., five per cent; the Oswego and Syracuse Railroad Co. a semi-annual dividend of four per cent. The aonval statement of the Pacific Mutual Insurance Company shows that the whole amount of premiums re. ceived from January 10 to December 31, 1855, was $554,~ 649 02. The net earned premiums were $381,146 32, of which $368,213 24 are entitled to participate in the divi- dead. The losses were $145,019 72, to which add re- insurances, expenses, &c., and the total expenditures are $230,280 02, showing a net profit of $150,866 30, The asseta of the company amount to $500,385 78. The Board of Trustees have declared a scrip dividend of thirty- seven per cent, for which certificates will be issued on the Sth of February. The aunexed table exhibits the condition of the several banking inativutions of Detroit at the close of each of the past two years:— 1855. Farmaes’ and Mechanics? Back Peninsular Bank Michigan Ins. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. Should you think the following analysis of the state- ment given in ot columns of this morning, may assist your correspondent, “A Stockholder,” or others inter- ested, to a clearer understanding of the position of the Michigan Central Railroad Company, it is at your service. It wowa appear from their statement that the company haye the following Road at cost.... s yy Due the company from R. N. Rice, for assets in bis hands as Supermtendent...... sees Due the company from C. I. Howe, Locai Due from New Albeny and Salem Dkinois Central Railroad bonds. + ++++$2,000,000 00 129,268 59 +32, The above is the Iteral reading of the statement of the company; but I do not fora moment believe — intend to say they hare already sunk all their capi and still want $2,264,893 51 to pay off their liabilities. They do, however, say so, and tell us how it happens. Bat befire procesiing with thele acocunt, of prot aid loss, I must premise that there is an evident error in your printed statement—I should think an omission of your printer of an item in the assets, of $270,911 18, most likely. This is some expense account. The profit and loss, therefore, stand thus:— Expenciture since ‘purchase..... $8,668,155 00 Item omitted as above... If this said $8,500,000 has been so em- employed that the road is worth so much more than be- fore, or in other words, if the company can show $8,500,000 worth for that amount invested, then they balance as tollows. - $641,728 67 Deduct.. 270,911 18 seseseeesesees $870,817 49 make a dividend, ‘The attempt to form Any accurate opinion of the condition of rallroad compy- nies from si statements as fromjtime to time appear, is Simply sn absurdity. Unlimited amounts igare as assets the denomination of ‘construction account,” or any equivalent title, while we have no information as to what class of items are embraced in it, and what have been charged to profit and loss as the current expense of working |. When a company wish to declare s Sivident, all they have to do, ancer the present system, ia to count all their receipte as profits; and ch ‘+ construction account’? all or the greater part sume expended to earn those profits, that ‘is, old ‘an assets amounts that for all we know may have been ex- mded in fuel for the engines, or even in champagne and ors, The remedy for all this is obvious enough, and doubtless would have been applied, long ago, were it not the intent both of stockholders and directors to put the best face on their affairs.
