THE SEWARDITES HAVE THE SBNATE—STRUGGLE IN THE HOUSE FOB SPEAKER, CLERKS, ETO.—SILENT CONTEMPT OF THE HARDS FOR THS SOFTS, BTC. ‘The doubts heretofcre existing as to the complexton of the State Senate are now altogether dissipated, The umber of seventeen claimed by Seward were, clection, though doubted by both Know Nothings and democrats, was fully confirmed to-day. The democrats luad counted upon Madden of the Ninth, Bellinger of the Sixteenth, and Clark of the Fifteenth. The Know No- thiegs upon the Hon. Cyrus P. Smith, of Brooklyn, re- turned from the Second district. Disappointment met both parties full in the face, for Madden and Bellinger voted throughout with the republicans; Clark would have done the same, had he been present; and the Brooklyn Senators, after voting twice with the Know Nothings, turned in and assisted the Sewardites to elect their various officers of the Seoate. What will the Kings county Amerivans think of this exploit of the honorable gentleman, within an hour afer he took the oath of office? It now turns out that Weed knew his more better than John H. Rhodes, or any K. N.’s of the Second dis- trict. It is for them te inquire whether anybody has been cheated or not. At one o'clock today the new members commenced vYoling viva voce for Speaker. Nearly every member was present, and the lobbies, galleries and entrances were crowded completely with office seekers and spectators. Upon the opening of no previous Legislature has there been any approach to the iutense interest mamtested in the organization of the House. The prominent candi- dates are Odeil, Ame.ican; Bailey, democrat, and Prea- dergast, black whig republican. Several attempts were made—some haif dozen—but no choice could be offectod. Odell rove the highest, but drew none from either of the other parties, The democia’s c’aim fifty, but only thirty yoted ‘or Bailey, the caucus candidate. Though an ac- tive barnburner when in the House before, he is not sup- ported by them now, Finally, after several unsuccesstul attempts to elect a Speaker, Mr. Glover, of New York, arose and stated that inasmuch as this was New Year's day, and balf of it bad already been spent without effe st in organizing, he woved that the House adjourn until dleven o'clock te-morrow morning. This was agreed to. From tbe course matters have taken to-day it is evi dent that much m time will be consumed than ever was known before in this State in organizing the House oy Assembly. So long as the voting by vied rc» is pursued no Speaker will be elected, as each of the three parties throw themselves upon their muscle, with eyes askana arms akimbo, represent themrelves as stanging upon principle and the constitution! Itis talked quite freely since the adjourcment that, if the necessity shall arise, Van Sanford, of Rensselear, will be taken up and elected over Prendergast. Cyrus Sraith’s course in the Senste ed the Know Nothings of the House indignant Prepare, then for another candidate for Speaker. ‘The softs are for union. In their caucns last night they proferred the olive branch to the hards, but the latcer treated it with silent contempt. There wax no desagree. ment as to the candi¢ates for the various offices, but the lards justify themselves by asserting that the softs have cheated them repeatedly, axd no chsnce will again be given them. Notwithstanding the efforts of Dean Richmond, John C, Wright, Daniel Sickles and George Clark, to effect a ‘anion upon principle,” the bards would not listen to them. The bards hold the card, and clasp it with a firm grip. Dr. Brandreth is on the ground, fortified with dosu- tcents and proofs which, he says, will satisfy the Senate that he is entitled to the seat to whieh Mr. Fadon i+ com- missioned. Ex-Alderman and ex-Senator Barr has not wade his appearance, to contest the sent of Dan, Sickles, so constantly threatened ever since election, Zenos Clark, a Seward republican Senator elect, has not attended—said to be iat home~and likely will not until after the organization. The repuolicans claim his vole, making six!cen for their officers, when Lieutenant- Governor Raymond will decide with them. The Governor has appoin‘ed Elisha 8, Judge, in place of Stuart, resigned, Navhaniel S. Benton, formerly Secre‘ary of State, and old hunker, is appointed Auditor of Canal Department, an excellent position, so far as integrity and capacity is concerned. Capeon City Later from davana. ARRIVAL OF THS QUAKER CITY—MOVEMENTS TUE ALLIED SQUADRONS, ETC. ‘The Unile1 States mail steamship Quaker City, It. W. Shulelat, commander, arrived here Monday nigat, from Mobile, December 24, and Havana the 27th. ‘The Quaker City made a fine run f:om Mobile to Havana, forty-four hours, against a strong head wind. She re. roained in that port twenty-eight hours, and auchored at the Quarantine Ground, Monday night, at twelve o'clock, four days and seven hours fyom Havana. There is nothing new from Havana. The Christmas holidays had interrupted business, and but fittle was doing, no alterations in staple articles or freights since last advices. Sleighing was extensively indulged in, and, in fact, every manner of vehicle was well patronized. The Mayor of the efiy, George Hall, Eaq,, received his friends at his oftise in the morning. The Sheriff and other county offielals who anwumed office on that day did the same. Ladies re- ceived their friends, as usmal, on the first of the new year, and many calls made by the men, The day, on tho who’e, paseed off pleasantly, and comparative! little drunkenness prevailed. All business being at a stand-still, the citizens were gaily flitting from house to heuse, ex” changing the compliments of the season, while the ladies remained at home end received their visiters with a hearty, old time hospitality. The @ay was very favora- ble to rleighing, and as large numbers availed themselves of the opportunity to evJoy it, the strects were aifve from morning until late in the night with merry parties, and the musical bells lent a charm to the day that rendered it peecliarly cheering. But the festival of the New Year, though so generally observed, passed over unmarred by apy of those scenes of disgracefal ri ‘ting and intoxication which too often blur ita beauty; and only three or four arrests were wade during the day. ' Altogether, the first day of 1856 was one to which the citizens of the Fastern District may look back with pleasure and satisfaction. Revoiting Homicide tin the Fourth Ward— Arrest of tne Alleged Perpetrator. About one o'clock yesterday morning # shocking oc- curence took place at the lager bier saloon of John I. ‘Veoks, No 231 William et., the scene of a murder about five months ago.
