The brokers were actively engeged shinulng about the street providing for call leans, and quotations for stocks chow the effects of the jimited eupply of capital, At the close prices were all tonding dowoward. It ep- pears to be the general impression that soon after the let of January money will be easier, but wed: not agree with that anticipation. We look fora tight market all through that month. Fancy stocks must suffer s*riously in the meantime. The exports of specie from this port for the week end. ing Seturcay, were as follows: — be Byes poo and Eliza, Jaren Ayres, Previously... Total for 1855., A.H, Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction sale o stocks and bends will take pisce on Monday, the Slat inst., at 1234 o’clock, at the Merchanty’ Exchange. The Michigan Southern Railroad Company have de clared a semi-annual dividend of five per cent. The sur- plus earnings of three per cent have been appropriated to depreciation account om the company’s steamers. Alter this dividend the construction stock comes in as full stock, taking its full share of aet earnings. ‘The interest coupons due January 1, 1850, on the city bonds of Kenosha, Wisconsin, will be paid at the Amect- can Exchange Bank, New York; also, the reat cou- te eeeew eee enereeseeen! [927,690,140 86 pons due January 1, 1856, on the mortgage bonds of the Kenosha and Beloit Railroad Company, will be paid at the People’s Bank, New York. ‘The warranta entered at the Treasury Department, Washington, om the 271h inst., were as follows :— For the ary a "41,802 17 For the Interior Depa: it, . 16868 45 For the Cusvoma,......... + 47.297 45 War warrants received and entered... + 14,266 23 Wer Feel rareene received had entered.... 1,457 73 Repayment on account ot the nay; ‘The anthracite coal trade is row wholly confined to the operations of the Reading railway, which brought down for the weekending Thursday last, 13,143 tons— makirg for the year since the first instant, 100,414 tons, against 96,315 tons to the same time last year. ‘The business for the last week was probably interrupted, to some extent, by the festivities attendent ou Christmas, though there is nothing in the trade calculated to pro voke activity. The Cumberland (Md.) Telegraph says the coal tonnage from that entire region during the week ending on the 224 instant was 7,700.14 tons, and since the 1st of Janu- ary last 657,596.05 tons, of which 462,142.02 tons were transperted over the Baltim:re and Ohio Railroad, and 196,404.08 tous descended the Chesapeake and Ohio eo The stock of the New York Central Reilroad Company is ove cf the mort inactive on the list, und has been steadily depreciating in market value since the Board ro placed it on the books, It sold yesterday at 9146 buyer 80 cays, equal to about 9) per cent cash. We have no doubt the company will (oa largé business during the present wiuter, and show large mont2ly recelpts, but its net inccme will not be increased in tha least. Tbe prices at which freight is taken, with the addiional expense of operating the read in the winter, on account of its loca tion in « high northern latitude, will reduce ‘ts net esrn- ings to comparatively a small sum, The Inst financiay statement of this company shows that ita capital and debt have reached an amount requiing earnings to the full capacity of the road, at remsunera'ing prices. Now, it is well known that the treighticg »usiness om our rail, ronds does not pay, The different companies would in re. ality be better cff without that heary portion which is Carried at such fowrates. They would not be able to show such large gross receipts, but their actual net in- ecme would be considerably greater. We know of innu- merable instances where the New York Central Railroad Company have taken freigh: at prices actually below the coxt of transportation, for two reasons, in nearly every care—firat, to keep it away from the Erie road; and second, to swell their gross monthly reesipts. During the win- ‘ter months the bulk of the New York Central business is freighting, and the competition going on between the four roads connecting the Atlantic seaports with the West, is, ard must ever be, 80 great that none of them willever derive much profit from the business. The local business of each will of course pay better, and there the Erie has the advantage of New York Central, it having no canal or water communication to contend with. It is our opinion that the actual net earnings of the Erie last year, were larger than the Central, notwithstanding the difference in gross receipts. The Erie has paid » good deal of money in dividends which it never earned, and so bas Cen:ral; ‘but the Erie Company in all its operating departments and in its current expenditures is honestiy and econom!- cally managed. We find nothing in {ts accounts like two and a balf per cent commussion paid to {ts President for purchases made of himse if; we find no direct dealing be- treen the President and Vice President, for the purchase ofdepots and elevators; we find no issue of bonds for imagi- wary premiums on stock; we find no branch roads put in consolidation at three or four times their cost; we find no purchase of side line which never existed except on paper; we find, in brief, none of those finsncis! operations in Erie, which appear @ plenty in the New York Central reports, and which have increased the capital of that concern to nearly forty mil- lion of dollars, There has bem extravagancy seough ia Erie to destroy almost any railroad company, but its expenditures for illegitimate parposes have been force’ upon it by circumstances, while those made by the New York Central have been made for the purpose of filling the capacious pockets of its maongers. The same ays tem of finance that conceived ond completed the ¢ msoli dation affair in the Central Company, is still ia opsra- tion, and not an opportunity to saddle the resd with mere debt or to absord cew branches or odd lines is suf. fered to pars. The company own sna operate aboat three hundred and fifty miles of branch roads, every one of which is a dead weight upon the trunk line, The Erie Cowpary have, it is believed, finally ext {sated them wives from financial difficulties, Its capitsl has beea increased largely by its financiering operations, bat as many of them could not bave been avoided, it was more unfortunate than criming!. In the midat ot (« embarad- ments an investigation was made, and ite actual condition placed before the public. Its divi¢ends were suspeaded, its fanded debt placed upon a proper basis, its Mating debt provided for, its construction account closed, its operating expenses reduced, under its intelligent su erin. tendent, to the lowest figare consisteat with proper efficiency, i's financial system improved in all its depart ments, and its administration placed in the hands of men who have no private interest to serve, no depot grounds to -ell, no elevators to dispose cf—men who de- sire no contract for rolling rails, for supplying spikes, wheels, &c., &e., who have no branch roads to consoll- date—it is in the hands of men who will not trifle with the trusts repored in them, or use the road more fir the enhancement of their private interests than those of the stockholders, The Erie Raflrond Company is probably better Organized now than ever before, and we believe it is actually earning at this moment a larger per cent mt on its capital than the New York Central. It is operated at s leas per cent, {is gross earnings are full as large compared with its capital; and [f the Central earns not eight per cent on its cost of thirty-eight million, we vhould Like to know why the Erle cannot earn as large @ per cent on its espital of thirty-four million cf dollars, ‘There in misreprerentation som and wo believe it is on the part of the New York Central Company. ‘The totsl public debt of Boston on the 20th of Dee., 1855, was as follows: Fixances Bowrox—Axocyt oF Der ‘We have a total of. ‘The means of meetin; 620.027 72 062 218 64 TOtAhsscerevevere vee BLITZ 8 os Tota! consclidnted debt, ae above. «7,866,160 77 Means of peyment, ¥ Caediecees seu 620 627 12 Bonds aad mortgage 062,218 5h : 1172845 2% Net debt at the close of businerson the 20th SS Dicember, 1856. ++ 86 M82,005 6 Only $10,000 of thie de vt the comaee doe betweew this Sit the close of the prevent financial year—30h April gext— ard this ameunt will beduly met at ite marurity, Of che water Cet, there hes been oa & temporary water Jona | Cue in this fvaetal year, 96,000; and on water serip ye in 1966, 1862 and 18 $11, 000— making ® to'al of 7,00, The locreave of the city debt, by loans astustly Regotiated since the U0th of April last, has been $91,600.
