Se _ downrront pty; Feit T NEW Y ORK. HERALD, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1855. Our Boston Correspondence. Boston, Dec. 22, 1855. Births, Deaths and Marriages in Massachusetts in 1854—Number of Births—Foreigners and Natives va Parents—Deaths: The Number— Aged People—Marriages—Old People Married— Young People Ditto—No Marriages in Several Town:—Counties where Marriages were most Numerous— Colburn and Dalton. ‘The thirteenth report of the registry and returns of the births, marriages and deaths in Massachusetts, embracing those for the year ending Dec. 31, 1854, has just been completed Ly Mr. Wright, Secretary of the Commonwealth, or rather under his superinten- dence. The tabular abstracts accompanying the re- pert were prepared by Mr. E. P. Robinson, a clerk in the State Department, who has executed his work with care and despatch. The report itself has been. made by Dr. Shurtleff, perhaps the man best quali- fied in the country for the task. The number of births in 1854 was 31,997, being an increase of 1,077 over that of 1853. Of these 16,35% wore males, 15,469 were females, and the sex of 176 was Du ~certained. The rate of increase Wao not £0 great as it Nie weon in the two preceding years. The number of childrett ~.+y of American parents was 16,470; of parents one ux hoth of whom were of foreign birth, 15,886; origin «ot aacertained, 1,661. Of! those of foreign or mixed origin; 12,476 had both parents of foreign birth; 788 had foreign fathers and American mothers, and 687 had American fathers and foreign mothers. The ratio of increase in the births of children of pa- rents of foreign birth was a little greater than it was in 1853, while there was a considerable diminu- tion in the number of children born of American mothers and foreign fathers. The county of Suffolk had the largest number of children born in it of parents of foreign origin. That county alone has produced an excess of births largely in favor of the foreign element, a fact not to be wondered at when we recollect that something more than one-half the population was of foreign origin. The number of male children born in Massachu- setta considerably exceeds that of the other sex. During the six years ending December 31, 1864, there were born in Massachusetts 89,811 males, 84,134 females, and S52 children of sex not ascer- tained. The excers of males in 1854, was 883, whereas it was 1, i851. This rale does not hola good in all parts of the State, as in the uties of Berkshire, Bi and Plymouth the number of girls born in 1s veger than that of boys ‘The increase of birt n Boston, in one year, waa showing much Jalling off as compared with 1858, and some as compared with earlier years. It out of 5,852 fathers who 4,in Boston, only 44 hative born Bostonians, a gingular proof of the change that has come over tne character of our city. Only 1,711 were natives of the Uniied States., Ireland con- tributed 2,824 fathers, and 2,956 mothers. The number of native born Bostonian mothers was only 524. There were but 36 twin births in Boston, against 51 in the preceding year. Seven births oc- curred in one house, in Oliver street, and the same number in a house in Orange street. Five children were born in one house, and several others saw three or four contributed in cach to the common stock. Great trouble isgxperienced in getting the number of births, thi ‘th the ignorance, suspicions and Jenlousies of parents. In many others of the cities the proportion of chil- dren born of foreign parents is as_ remarkable as it isin Boston, In otber cities the difference is quite as decided the other way. Even in nota few of the small towns the foreign increase much preponderates. The only county in which there were more deaths than births, is Nantucket, where the births were 122, and the deaths Jn Middlesex there were 1,894 more births than deaths. The other counties that made ihe largest on in this way were Essex, Suffolk, Noifolk and ‘orcester. The whole number of births in the State, as already stated, was 1,997; of deaths, 21,- 414; excess of births, 10,583. In 45 cities and large rand Nantucket, showed an excess Of deaths, being 133 in the former place and 8 ia the latter. In nine of these places excess of births exceeds even the whole number of deaths. The deaths were very equally divided between the sexes; 10,710 males dying to 10,558 females. The abe fi hag death paid his addresses to most women. ie number of deaths was greater by 1,113 than it was in 1853, but only 991 larger than in 1849; but the latter year wasa very bad one. The average age of the deceased was 27.16 years, whereas in ‘53 it was but 26.87. In ‘52 the average was 27.78. Of the deaths, 4,188 were of children ander one year; under five years, 8,079. The next most fatal period is between 20 years and 30, at which age there were 2,602 deaths." Two men and four women were upwards of one hundred years old. One of the women died from an accidental fall, like that “frisky old girl,” La y Desmond, who is reported to have been pee cut off at 160, in consequence of a fail from a tree into which 1 was 410 are reported as i she had climbed after fruit. In this in- stance the woman was of color, lived in Pittsfield, and was 110 years old. An old woman died in Boston uged 103. Two of these centenarians died in alms houses. Of the cauees of death the following are the most remar- kable :—Consumption, 4,611; pneumonia, (lung fever,) 838; scarlatina, 490; smallpox, 207; scrofula, 114; typhus fever, 507; measles, 325; hooping cough, 268; erysipelas, 122; dysentery, 1,159; croup, 562; diarrhora, 221; cholera, 715; cholera infantum, 528; hydrocephalus, 461; teething, 436; old age, 1,071, of whom 631 were females, and all but 37 were over FR seat of age; violence, 887; suicide, 82, of whom 59 were males and 23 females, showing that women can bear the ills of life better thau men, and which would have been inferable, even if we had no statistics upon which to base our conclusion; ac- cidents, 299; drowned, 348; burns and scalds, 79; heat, 46; poisoned, 14; suffocated and frozen, 8 each; mardered, 7; hydrophobia, 6; by lightning, 4; execu- tion, 1; abortion, 1; starvation, 1. The number of deaths by intemperance was $3, or just one more than by suicide. The greatest number of suicides were perpetrated in the ‘‘merry month of May,” ex- cept July, which had 12, while May had 10; June , April, 8; Febroary,8,and November had but 7, though ¢ last named month is the one in which, according to the popular idea, the disposition to commit suicide is by far the strongest of any. may mention here that the statistics of suicide in Europe, 40 far as they have beon gathered, show that November has no claim to be considered the month of suicide. The number of marriages in 1854, according to the returns, was 13,683, or 865 more than in 1453, or 2,105 more than ia 1852. An awful thing, traly, this increase. The parties were divided as tollows: Americans, 7,492; foreigners, 4,7 Americans married to foreign women, 542; foreigners married to American women, 512; parties whose nativity was not ascertained, 340. Some two-thirds of the men married in Boston were over 25 years, and nearly as large a proportion of the women were un- der ti » The greatest number of marriages took place in November, probably to compensate for the deficiency of suicides. March had the smallest namber. ‘sgiving day is the favorite occasion in autumn for celebrating marriages, and that oc- ours in November. The youn, males married were two boys of 16, who had brides older than ives, the difference being six years in one case and two in the other. Several boys of 17 were married, one of them actually giving is hand to a woman of double his own age, 34. It is to be hoped Boys always fall in love with women, a4 men do with Cee The youngest females married were two girls of 13 years. Twelve girls of 14, and thirty-five of 15 years, were married. To match these displays, of youthful folly, we have several exhibitions of the pranks of second childhood. Three men and one ‘woman were married after they had sed four- soore years, The woman was married to a joll bacheloe of upwards of seventy. Five ancient maid- en ladies, of y and upwards, were married, one of them ing & vigorous widower of eighty, and 5 number of first marriages was 11,0! ‘The bachelors who married widows numbered 519; of widowers who married maidens, 1,332; of widow- ers who married widows, 662. Three of these last widows were under twenty, and may be considered as asnew. We are requested by Capt. Halpin, of the First ward police, to state that the burglary on Messrs. Jaffray & Son’s store was not ducovered by a private watchman, as wasroported in yesterday's paper, but by one of the po- licemen attached to his district.
