FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONBY MARKET. Sarunpay, Deo. 15—5 P. M. ‘There wase very active and a very buoyant market ‘this morning at the Stock Exchange. The movements in Brie were upon a very extensive scale. The sales this figure up nearly ten thousand shares. In Kead- ing there was unusua activity. Western Railroad stocks were in demand, all at better prices. State stocks and wailroad boads were operated in to a large amount, and the appearance of the market was certaialy very favora- ble for holders and speculators for a rise, Nicaragua ‘Transit is moving up more gradually than other stocks, but we are inclined to think that it will be more firmly sustained. All the old stockholders in this concern have at last discovered that they have a magnificent pro- perty, apd all that is necessary is good management. ‘The stock is mostly held fur above current prices. and we doubt if prices considerably above those now ruling would bring out many shares, Tho last *re- port of this concern established two very important facts: first, the immense productiyeness of the ling and second its bad management. It must, even in the hands of those whe have heretofore so recklessly squan- dered its earnings, pay another year a better dividend on the market value of the stock thaa any other on the list. Michigan Central Railroad touched par to-day on time, buyer's option. There was a bear sule at 99 per cent, seller 00 Cays, There is talk of a very large divi- dend in January. Galena and Chicago was in demand at the close at the advance, There is but one railroad stock on the market higher than Galena, and that is New Jersey Raalroad. So far as real valne is concerned, it should stand head and shoulders above all others, At the first boara to-day Virginia 6’s advanced Lif per cont; Illinois Central Bonds 23¢; Centon Company 4 Pepnsylvania Coal Company 3; Nicaragua Transit 3 Frie Railroad 134; Harlem 34; Reading Railroad 2; Hud- on River Railroad 3; Michigan Central Railroad 1; Mi- chigen Southern Railroad 2; Panama 4s; Galena and Chicago 134; Cleveland snd Toledo 1; Chicago and Rock Island %{. Illinois Central Bonds sold to the extent of $131 000, opening at 81 and closing at 82 per cent. Cleve- land and Toledo appears to have strong buyers, At the second board the market was presty well main- tained, Galena and Chicago advancei 4 per cent, but was held at higher prices after the board, Erie and Reading were im demand, and closed without change. Harlem fell off 4 per ce: Nicaragua Transit was steady. ‘Tho parties buying this stock have completed a programme that will meet with general approval. It 4s a compre- hensive plan to place the company in the front ravk of dividend paying investments, It will do away entirely with all future competition; give a fair division of bust- ness; do away with the army of offisials now bleeding the treasury at every pore, and reduce its expenditures to the most economical basis, without destroying the com- pany’s efficiency. This is the substance of the program- me, and at the proper time it will be more fully developed. ‘Tue nteamuship Union, for Havre, has deen detained until to-morrow (Sunday) morning, She has on board $126,832 88 in wpecie. ‘The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, ‘Washington, on the 12:h instant, were as follows:— For the redemption of stook: For the Treaaury Depsrtme For tbe Interior Departmen For the oustoms., War warrants received and entered From mixcellaceous sources From sustoms On account of The grown receipts of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the two fiscal years ending October 1, 1855, were as follows:— Finances or Vincimia, 1855. Is there among the managers of the Transit Company any one that boasts @ long line of illustrious ancestors like Hastings, whose boyish ‘ancy and ambition have been fired to recover, a patrimonial estate that has passed from the family possession? ‘The rapacity of some of them might induce the aus cion—the firm bargains made among themselves, which it has been shown that a single steamboat makes about $150,000 per annum more than a single the same service, where the proprietor of the line cleared his million of dollars per annum.
