6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MOSBY MARKET. Tuunapay, Dec, 13-6 P. M. ‘The stock narket opened this morning » little mere buoyant, and with more activity in all the leading fancies, Brie hes taken another start upward, and advanced to. day considerably on the opening price. Reading was alse im better demand at better prices; also most of the West, orm raiiroad stocks. Nicaragua Transit appears te be gradually but steadily working up to the old points, and there is every probability of its being permanently sus- tained. Nicaragua » now less troubled with intermal diaseanions than ever betore during the existence of the ‘Transit Company, and everything must henceforth ope, rate more favorably. The New York Central Railroad election bas passed off without any change. This is of Course as was anticipated. It was a mere matter of form. ‘The same board remains in power, and we shall probably ave the sume set of officers with the same system of management. This only hastens the result we have long since predicted, viz., ® reduction in the aggrogate of net earnings, and what smaturally follows, a reduction ‘a the rate of dividend. Those interested may not ne aware of it ‘until the fect is announced, for it ig the oasieat thing in the world for annual railroad reporta to be so made out as to represent a state of things entirely different from that actually existing. We have ip our midst instances enough of this fact. We need go no further than the Exie sad Harlem companies tur illustrations; and what we so frequently predicted in each of these roads must, sooner or later, appear in the New York Central, The same system of managemont is pursued, the same financiering, the same extravagance, the same reckless increase in oous*ruction acooaut which produced insolvency in the two roads abovediamed, und the came misrepresentations appear im all the Central Company's reports which in the Erie Company so long deceived its stockholders. It is with the Central a mat, ter of time only, A few years must place it on the Stock Kixchange alongside ot Erie. If {te internal coudition was as well koown, or bad been so thoroughly exposed, it ‘would be there now. Railroad bonds were comparatively quiet to-day. Wlincis Central advanced, with quite mo- derate rales. Cumberland Coal has not moved ich. either way lately. Speculators in it appear to have ex- haasted its speculative resources. We learn that the movigage was not removed by the extension of its bonds, and that the company have no more right to dispose of any portion of ita estate than it previously had. At the first board to-day Miinois Central bonds ad- vanced 34 per cent; Nicaragua Transit, 3; Erie Railroad, 134; Reading Railread, 134; Michigan Contral Railroad, J Panama remains unchanged. The deoline of yes- terday is aot satisfactorily accounted for. In less than thirty days the company will pay a large cash dividend —some say as high as seven per cent. Hudson River Rallroad has become quiet again. A sort of galvanic shook was experienced a day or two since, which extorted # kick or two, but it immediately relapsed again, and has exhibited no signs of life since. We must lay it up alongside of Harlem. Some confidence man bought 100 shares to-day, at 82, buyer thirty days. The condition of the money market, the season, the ponition of po- litical afairs all over the werld, the expansion in prices in our own markets of securities having no actual value, the scarcity of outside operators, the probable exporta- tion of large amounts of specie and the importation of lange quantities of dry goods, &., the absence of a foreign deuund for our public sticks, and the probabillty of a reiuru of many now held in Kurope—all poiat to a contraction, and destroy all hope of apy speculative movement outside of the cliques of the Stock Exchange. After the adjournment of the board the following saies ot bonds and stocks wero made by Albert H. Nicolay:— $37,000 Jeffersonville City 6 per cents, flat, 33,000 Fort Way ne & South, Re dat mig, U6, do, 10,000 Terre Haute & Alon R, lat mtg. ° nats 2,000 Little Miami RR. Ist mtg. 5 6,008 N’rn Ind. [At the seoond board, the markot was quite firm. Nivea” ragaa Transit advanced 3 per cent; Ilinois Centra; Bonds, <. Reading fell off 3 per cent, There were large sales of Erie, and at the close there was an upward ten- dency. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows:—- Paid on oe wey sisson SBMS 2 . 5 4,101,711 41 Paid he Assay Oftoe.. 2052 15 fail on disbursing checks 24,004 58 [a our statement of gold on board the steamship John L. Stepheas, which left San Francisco on the 20th of November, for Panama, we stated that the amount was $1,944,000, ef whioh $1,744,000 was for New York and $200,000 on English account. It should have read: a total of $1,744,000, including $200,000 on Koglish uo- count. The steamship Raltic, at this port from Liverpool, bringy six days’ later intelligence from all parts of Europe. ‘The mews does not possess the slightost interest or im- portance. Nothing new had transpired in relation to the ‘war, sed tuere were any quantity of pesce rumors afloat. Daring the winter, while active hostilities in the field ate auspended, peliticlana and diplomatists will doubtless amuse themselves with getting up rumors of negotiations being reaewed, and whatever may be necessary to keep ap the excitement. The Baltic does not bring mash Gasscial or commercial news. The cotton and corn mar- keta remain without much chenge, both as regards prices and extent of operations. The advance in consols ia at- tributed principally to the rumors regarding peace, and partially to the speculative movements going on in the market. Tue London Chronicle of the Ist inst., in giving ‘tha Bank of England returns for the week ending Novem- seer 24, rays — The above returp, for the week ending the 24th inst., when compared with that for the preceding week, exhi ‘bits the foliowing changes: — In the Ifabélities, an increase of public deposits of £688,- 824; am increase of other deposits of £642,639; an increase of rest of £16,606, and an decrease of seven day and other ‘Dilla of £19,736. In the assets the return shows an increase of other se- curitica of £864,280; an increase of reserve of notes of £553,115; a decrease of gold and silver coin of £5,072; and an increase in the government securities of £215,000, The bullion in the issue and banking departments to- gether amounted to £11,130,937, which, ax compared with £11, 268,224, the ‘amount ot he previous week's return, decrease of £123, 26" “Nihe ‘neten in circulation amounted to £19,060,000, wich, as compared with £19,422, 230, the amount of the (previous week's retarn, shows a 0 of £371,330. ‘This statement, it will be observed, exhibits soveral im t changes, but they have ‘almost exclusive reference to the payment of tie instalments on the f Tish and Turkish loans. Thus the increase of £700, to the public er general deposits was occasioned by "the payment of the former, the increase in the other or rivate depesitn was is die to the payment of the latter. The inecease in the other or private securities ix consi- derable, and waa created paruly by the tucrease of dis+ counts, end sdvances made on deposit of Turkish scrip. ‘There is a further decreas in the bulhon. The increase in the resecve of notes is small, considering the large payments made under the items of the public and other deposita, her amounting 0 above £1,:300,000; but tals in explained by the fact that with regard to the pay- ment on account of the Turkish ‘oan, tas the Bank did not reesive more than about one-third in notes; the reavia- dev was carried to the credit of this item by means of the Bank ostearibly making advances on the scrip deposited by the holders, Mw London News of the 1st inst., says:— Foglish stock market abowed much strength at se nin morning, the extreme rise of yesterday Mernoon even alightly exceeded. To the close of the year itis i palpable that money in all quartera will ensuré profitable employment, and that small traders and others will be obliged to submit to the increased terms which the banks and discount hounes find it mecessary to enforce. It is, however, very satisfactory to discover that mercantile affairs’ present euch an appearance of pabaiss credit being well supported, consi- ing the inte protracted stringency. | Soma ‘hope is sowt to be entertained that the winter may bring about fresh negotiations for peace; and there are those who venture to predict that the preliminaries may now be considered a8 in course of arrapgsment; but it is diffi. oult to believe that either Franco or England will accept any proposal, unless ftshail guarantee the integrity of Turkey and provide for the free navigation of the Black and the BalticSeas, If a termination of the war were announced it would immediately produce « most bened- cial influence.
