6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONET MARKET. Sunpar, Dec, 9—6 P. M. ‘At the close of the market yesterday the tendency of pisces was upward, In the face of the most unfavorable tinancial and commericial intelligence from Earcpe we (nd ap inflation in stocks on this side. The last steamer rom Europe bronght ue accounts of « stringency in the iondca apd Continental money marketa almost unpre. ccdented, of rates of interest ruling among private baukers ranging from six to twelve per cent, of the utter impossibility of raising money on second and third class securities, of the probability of the Bank of England advancirg its rate of interest, of the geweral insrease in the value of money in every direction, of the continued drain of builion from England to the Continent, of » depression in prices for cotton and breadstuffs, of the growing embarressments of the govern- ments engaged in the war, of the approaching period for the negotiation of new public loans, of strikes among manufacturing operatives, of high prices of food, of a reduc tion in all branches of industry, of the unfavorable condition of the new grain crops, of the probability of numerous important failures among the commercial classes, and the prostration of private credit, and of many other things tending to awide spread revulsion that must shake to the very centre the commercial sys- tems of Europe. Advices by previous steamers gave us indications of an approaching crisis, but those received by the America were of a character creating the most alarming anticipationa, We do not see how it is possible for the whole of Europe to escape @ @nancial revul-ion. ‘The causes are tbo deep and have been operating tuo long to be eradicated without « terrible convulsion, and itis best to avail ourselves of the little time left. to prepare for its coming. ‘Those who think for a moment that we sba'l escape all or any part ot this trouble in which our European friends are involved, make a wost fatal mistake. We may not be such serious sufferers, but it would be utter folly for usto shut our eyes to the fact that our interests are in great danger, and that we must feel the shock which must, at no cistant day, pros- trate many in Europe intimately connected with Ame- rican trade, The value of money in Europe is of itself a sexious matter to us, Weare #o largely indebted, that all available capital will be called home at once, for every foreign house is in wantof every dollar. Nothiog bat our unlimil: prosperity bas enabled us to go thus far so little influenced by Kur)pean embarrasuments, but we ahall be required to meet every dollar of our new in- debtedness as it is created, avd it is not at all impossible but that such amounts of our old mdebtedaess may be required as would embarrass us considerably. The Amcricam Railway Times, of the 6th inst., saya: — The price of Panama Railroad stock bas risen 5 per cent, within a short time, in consequence of the improved pros- pects for a bay dividend ia January. The receipts in October were $120,000, and the November business, it i+ supposed, wili boabout the same, The carnings for Ju- ly, August, September and October were $332,057—leav- ing about $225,000 to be earned in November ava Decem- ber to mect tha estimate of Colouel Totten. The freight Sees cially in express frei ght—is continually in- the goal transportation has largely ex eed- fed the entimates of the company. ‘Ube steamship'Ariel, at this port from Havce and South, ampton, brings one day's later news from Europe. The most importunt feature in the financial news is the decline in consols. In one day we find that consols fell from 882% 088% to 88% 988%, # decline of 34 per cent in less than bows. This is somethiog unusual, and leads us to think that the drain of bullion was goiog on more rapid than ever, and thatthe rumors of peace were without the slightest foundation. The last Bank statement published was made up tothe 17th of November, but the dally movemects of specie were well known im financial circles, and there can, therefore, be no doubt but that the next weekly statement will be very urfavorable, hence the de- cline in consols. Albert H. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction sale of stocks and bonds will take place on Monday next, the 10th inst., at 125 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. Some gocd insurance stocks will be offered. ‘the anthracite coal trade the past week shows the near approsch vf winter, and the end of active trade this year. The shi, ments of the Schuylkill Navigation Company for the week enéing on Thursday were 21,463 tons, and for the season to that date, 1,004,764 tons, against 907,354 tons to the fame time last year, showing an increase of 187,410 tons. The Reading Railroad Company closed its Dus'ness year on the 30th November. lts tonnage on the 20th, within one day of the foll year, was 2,205,261, against 1,687,864 for the previous year. The tonange of the firat week of the new year, to the Gch inst., is 27,743 tons, against 12,874 tons, delivered the firat week of last year, The shipments on the Lehigh forthe wovk ending with Seturcay last were 6,037 tons, against 37,898 ‘ons for ihe corresponding week last year; ana far the seacon, 1,274,965 tous, against 1,245,582 tons to the same time last year. Shipments on the Lehigh are closed, and show a gainon last year of 28,567 tons. The shipments cf lumber are 64,587,567 feet, against 48,052,266 feat Inst your. The Morris Canal was closed on the 4th fast; the Delaware division of the Pennsylvania Canal on the Tth inst. The annual meeting of the Androscoggin Railroad Com- spany was held on the 3d inst., at Livermore Falls. The directors’ report represented the affairs of the company to be in a favorable condition. ‘she earnings amounted 0 $60,000, and the expenses to $17,000. The extension the road,so Sandy river is talked of. A bill is now before the Senate of Tennessee, authoriz- ing # conventional rate of interest of ten per cent, but leaving the present legal rate of interest, mx per cent, to stand in the absence of any agreement between the par- ties to a contract fixing another rate not higher than tea per cent. ‘The Ceutral Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia, have declared a semi-annual dividend of five per cent; the Marine Bank of Savannah, a semi-annual dividend of seven per cent. ‘Lo those who are disposed to hold on to New York Cen- tral for the good it bas done them io times past, or pre- fer a five or six per cent investment to a larger one, on the ground that it is “! nearor home,” we have not a word tomy, ‘The stock must be held by comebody, aud it is perhaps as well that it continues in their hamds, To the outeiders—the small dealers—those who are anxious to make the most out of their little capital—who can ill afford to see that little capital gradually diminishing, Doth in revenue and market value—who are willing to condidly weigh well meant and well considered advice— ave havo much to say. And what we have to say concerns that class alone. They must be the sufferers or gainers. In comparison with the men who manage the Ventral, they axe weak and unsophisticated. ‘hey know very little about it. ‘They have not leisure to ex- amine the minutim of « tinancisl concern of this magnitude, nor the necessary experience to ¢.m- prehend it if they had. They take » statement of three rows of figures—earnings, expenses sud profits— and that is about as far as thoy are permites togo. ‘They see a great flourish made about the reduction of the debt of the company, of $312,600, within two years, while nothing is ssid about an increase on another page of the ledger of over $6,000,000 withia the same period. ‘They see a statement that the expenses are fifty per cent of the gross earnings, wit! nothing allowed for depre- ciation, while the fact that this depreciation amounts to at leas: $600,000 pee annum, as proved by the sta'e Kagi neer’s report, is entirely overlooked. They see the gross re- ceipts from month to month increasivg, while the fact that the net income is decressing is steadily kept out of sigut. ‘Take the very last month's report, for {nstance. In October the receipts were ,759 74, show!ng an ia grease gross of $77,339, and leaving it to be inferred that the net was in proportion, while in fast the net was less. By looking # little closer into the statement it will be observed that the increase is on freight, which, the State Evgineer sys, the roai has beon carrying for less than ovat of transportation, while cn passengers (the only source of profit) there bas been a decrease of 643,000. Allusion has been made to a widuw in Albany who was compelled, by certain Wall street rascaliries to part with her Central stock st 96 percent. Sho bas saved nine per cent up to this time by the sacrifice, but the full his- tory of that investment remains tobe told. It se as that this lady purchased her stock at the time of the conso- iidation, at 120 per cent. She was in‘uced to go into it from the fact that all the leading men in Albsny said it weacheap. The party who sold the stosk was # direstor in one of the consolidated companies. He sold five hun died thares of the stosk fur the openiog, cleacing va his original investment @ little over seven huntred per cent. He also sold a considerable amount of the stock at the gun time short. Now, had this iady known as much of the sea, ner ite of the case as the director—tad she known bos movatrously the stock bad been watered—what a pro- @ig' :« advance the director was reatising on his money— w= boribty the roads had been suffered to ran down, ) 4 16g an immediate and lerge increase of capt!al to ’ ir thern—she would have rold the stock short, too, in +: ocf buying, This to make such information plaia to » bat we write, We do it at the expense of a consider. »-» wen aot of hard feeling and hart words; but we can ts let them pass. dan « upe-imtenZent of the Carthagens canal has issued NEW the following commercial circular relative to the naviga- tion of and tolls on that work:— the of the Dique will be open from this to Calamar for boats ys vowels without eel: effects and embarkations DAN! ier Sr it. Deted a, Och, ', Superintendent From thin ft appears that the New Granada Canal and Steam Navigation Company have pushed forward their work with very unusual energy. They certainly are en- titled to much credit. Nota dollar of their stocks have been before the public, or bandied about Wall street; and their bonds, small in amount, have been taken by those who have been favored with an inside knowledge of the enterprise, to hold as an investment. The company, ‘we think, has managed its affairs very well indeed. They have, within a year, opened the canal sufficiently to war- rant them in offering the same as a means of commaunica- tion into the interior, and sufficient to entitle them to collect the tolls established by law. Their steamboats on ‘the river are earning large profits, and they have now ad- YVertised the fine steamship Osprey to run from this city to Carthagena, as a regular packet. By a letter fecetly received from ® very reliable merchant in Carthagenay we learn that the steamer Henry Wells, in her October trip up to Honda and back, made a net profit of over twenty thousand dollars, We also learn from the report of Mr. Gillett, the Superintendent of the canal, that the tolls now being collected, aceording to Jaw, will be sufli cient to render the csnal fit for navigation by steam- boaté—in other words, the canal wil! take care of itsely now without any further drafts on the company. The revenue from the canal wiil, of course, increase as it im- proves. Assuming this to be correct, the company are now earzing a very handsome dividend on its stock. It leaves to the credit of the dividend account the profit of ull of their steamboats, and the line between this city and Carthagena, Goods can now be shipped from this city to the interior of New Granada, by this canal. It must, from its natural position, control the trade of the river.
