«FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Frway, Nov. 2—6P. M. ‘The absence of the steamship Baltic pute « partial stop {At the first board to-dey the market generally was a shade or so bet‘er. Indiana 5’s advanced 3 per cent; Erie Railroad, 3; Galena and Chi- cago, 144; Chicago and Rock Island, 3; Hudson Railroad, ‘XM. Virginig@’s declined 34 per cont; Missouri 6's, 3; Cleveland and Toledo, 3. There was not much activity inany of the fancies. Cumberland and Nicaragua re- main unchanged. There was # strong movement in Ga- ‘lena to-day. Parties desirous of purchasing have been cwise im doing so before the October returns of receipts come in. Nearly a thousand shares were purchased this ‘morning at the advance, principally for cash. Erie is eustained much better than expected. It may for a time reat in the neighborhood of current rates, but it is des- ‘tined to fall back ultimately to the points it started ‘from a few months since.” The clique that a few waecks stock at fifty-four and fifty-five per cent, with the intention of carrying it to sixty and seventy per cent, will not make another attempt very A year or two since the same clique purchased several thousand shares at ninety per cent, with the in- tention of carrying it to par, but they were no more suc- cessful in that instance than they have been in this, ‘They were large losers then, an‘ so they will be now. They are still at work bolstering up the market, but the amount of stock afloat is a0 great thatgit must, sooner or later, cave in. Nicaragus Transit is at present about as ‘much reduced in market value as at any time since its organization, Not much stock has been brought out during the recent panic. Reading is pretty well down for a stock that promises so well in the shape of divi- dends, Within sixty days the company will pay at least ten per cemt, which on the market price will pay pretty “well. It is only those unfortunates who are obliged to sell that feel the present depreciation. Wall street is full of that class, and we must therefore look for a long period of depression. There are so tew railroad stocks on the market {n which outsiders have the least confidence that even those possessing real merit and productive- ness are with difficulty sustained. It must be confessed that the experiment of railroads as a stock investment bas proved a failure, England has lost five hundred millions of dollars in this species of property, and the last semi-annual exhibit reveals a less satisfactory state of things than any before. land has lost over a hundred millions in the same class of investments; each succeeding year’s, and even month’s, returns showing a change only for the worse. Scarcely a dozen of her hundred roads now pay regular dividends, and but a solitary one commands a premium in market for ite shares. Of the roads in the middle Stetes, the aceount is but a trifle more favorable. and populous States of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, et least one hundred -millions more has been sunk, and the tendency is still downward. At the Sonth the state of things is no better; and the West—except in some favored localities—shows roads quite as unprofitable and unsaleable asin any other part of the country. Gradually, slowly, but surely, {s the mighty net work of iron, inau- gurated but a few yeara ago with such magnificent pros. pects, with steamhorse and flashing equipage, and confident hopes of boundless and endless profits, wearing and fading away, and losing its hold upon the public ‘vo stock operations. took hold of this In the three rich It would seem that there is somewhere some radical defect, some monstrous error in this great system. What it is—why railroads are never built within the esti- mate of their engincers—why nine-tenths of them begin with large dividends, and taper off ina little time to nothing—why the capital {s forever increasing, and the profits and dividends diminishing, are questions which seem to us both reasonable and proper. not why we should be stigmatized as Wall street rascals or hired ruffians when we honestly and fairly put these inquiries, and endeavor as best we can, in all trath and sincerity, to answer them. The failure of the ratlroad system as an investment for profit has spread desolation and woe throughout the land. Innumerable families, widows and orphans, mechanics, farmers, day laborers, and thousands of people of the smallest means in every class of society, have been utterly ruined and crushed by the fall. Old ageand helpless infancy, hopelessly beggared, drag ont a muerable existence only to curse the day Avice of some projector, con tractor, director,or consolidating swindler, was investedin railroad stock. Who makes the money and who loses it in railroads? The great financier, the projector, the con- tractor, the officers of the company, the consolidator and large operator behind the scenes—they make the money— while the poor outsider, humbugged by specious state ments, false representations and deceitful a‘vice, is the party to shoulder the loss. We are cognizant, for in stance, of the fact that a director in one of the roads o the New York Central Company, on the completion of the consolidation, sold out the entire amount of his stock at $120, (some 500 shares,) and sold a large amount short besides; that he cleared in the sale over seven hundred per cent on the original investment, and that he left his constituents without the slightest word of warning to hold on to their stock till it has fallen 37 per cent. We are not disposed to stand by quietly while such practices as these are going on. York Central stock inflated to its utmost bearable limit, and the managers then selling out, | emall holders to stay in, with their stock settling down from 125 to 88. will go, and ought to go, ten to fifteen per cent lower. We know it to be a fixed fact—and the managers of the road know it too—that within two years fcom this date the company will be compelled either to reduce their dividends or to increase their capital by several millions. We know that the increase of gross receipts for the last two years is owing entirely to freights carried under cost; and that in consequence of rival routes, the enlarge- ment of the Erie Canal and other causes, the net receipts are not in future to increase. We know (at least we have the authority of the State Engineer for it) that the Cen- tral Company, in making no allowance for depreciation, make an error in the statement of their profits of at least $400,000 per annum, and that they actually divide that sum in their eight per cent dividend when they have not earned the first dollar or it. With such knowledge and such belief, it is our fized purpose—compatible alike with our duty and our feelings—to analyze and exhibit to the world the intrinsic merits and demerits, the interior workings, the history, present condition, ang future prospects, not only of the New York Central Railroad, but of all roads in which our readers are supposed to have an interest. We do it to warn the ignorant outsiders against the deceitful practices of those behind the scenes. We do it to pro- tect the innocent and weak against the grasping, the unserupulour, and the powerful; and we are not tobe deterred or swerved from our purpose by hard names or cries of Wall street rascality. ‘The Amistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows :— when their little all, by th We have seen the New We believe the stock Paid oe i on abe *e day tacl faclade $10,000 Caitfornia vane ‘The annexed statement exhibits the value of merchan- &e., imported into and exported from this district during the month of October, 1864 and 1855:— Commence Or Port oF New Yorx—Imrorts anp Exports. “4 Imports, feanaslnpataovreceapiate ‘The returns for the month of October this year do not took as favorable as those for the same month last. Mr. H. has been for a quarter of « century well known in commercial and monetary circles as one of the firm of Holbrook & Nelson, and from his well ®nown cautious and conservative antecedents, his elec- tion will bring great strength to the company, and we ‘think ensure the completion of the road. This amount will put into opera- tion the road for seventy miles, reaching the forests and the iron region, from which point, it is estimated, a very Inrge income is sure for the road. We see no reason why bonds secured upon the roads and timber lands in the State of New York should not take their proper place among our best railroad securities for investment. ‘The tolls received on the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal, from the opening of navigation te the 28th of Oc- tober, amount to $177,764 27, agatRat $146,605 68 to the corresponding date last year. It is stated that the two great railroads of this State— the Erte and the Central—are worked at am expense o fifty per cent of their gross income. This we have never believed, and have repeatedly shown the utter absurdity of such statements. Suffice it, therefore to pote th t the general demand has been extremely mo’ derate, while factors have shown a stronger desire to ree, lize, and thereby helped to weaken prices, which mostly rule in favor of buyers. Less activity bas been apparent in brown and bleached sheetings ond shirtings, which have continued depressed. Desirable styles of cotton flannels are rare and needed. Denims and drills are in limited demand at heavy rates. Duck seems rather brisker, but not dearer. Ginghams, lawns and nanki, are quiet and somewhat nominal. Osnaburgs of favori! makes are sparingly offered, while remaining in fair re- quest at steady prices. Printing cloths rule quiet, but firm. Prints ere dull and drooping. Stripes and ticks display no new feature, Woollen goods are in rather better request, but are otherwise without improvement. Blankets attract most attention at former quotations. Cassimeres, cloths, and Goeskina are moderately active, but somewhat infirm. Flannela are saleable, and tolerably steady. Jeans and Minseys appear inactive and languid. There is less in- quiry for mouslin de laines, which are more freely offer- ed at previous rates. Satinets are brisker, but not dear- er, Shawls and tweeds remain as last noticed. Foreign productions continue quiet and depressed | with more disposition to reli than to buy; while the current importa are considerably in excess of those for the same period last year, the total entries for the present week equalling nearly $1,900,000, against very little more than $700,000 the corresponding week of last year.
