NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1855. Islands Correspondence. Unrrep Searas F: Jammsrown, Post or Sanra ra On, Gana a iananDe, } Sudden Death of Col. J. C. , Onited States Goneul at the Islands—Grand ‘Ceremoniale Ob- served at Hie Funeral—Respect Paid to His Me mory by the Spanish Authorities and the Popula- Den adees of the Consulate, §e., §¢- "Phe circumstances of our being at this island (en ‘youte to the rendezvous of the squadron at Isle St. Vinoont, Cape de Verds,) at the moment of the decease of our late respected Consul for this island, Colonel J. ©. Hut, of New York, and the cordial manner in which this melancholy Bvent has been sympathized with on the part of all the aathorities of her Majesty the Queen of Spain, the local authorities, aud the various consuls and Bitizens representing foreign governments, and in sffording to our Commander-in-Chief, Comodore Crabbe, commanding U.S. forces on the coast of Africa, every possible courtesy and facility for the interment of the body of the deceased in a manner calculated to impress the people with the respect and consideration which we p to the remains of public functionaries, has seemed to me to be of suf- ficient interest to demand that 1 should communi- cate the facts to you “ officeusement,” and must be Dy apology for troubling you with this letter. When at Madeiraa few days since, Commodore Cralibe received a letter’ from Col. Hart, requesting that, if convenient, the flagship should call at this port on her way south, which was most cheerfully complied with, and the more so as the actiny master of this ship is a nephew of the late co: sul. The ship was accordingly anchored off the mole of the town at 8 o’clock on the morning of the 24ih inst., and at 9 o’clock Lieut. Barnet (Flag Lieut.) was despatched by the Commodore to visit the Con- pul, tender to him a passage to the ship, and to visit the authorities and announce officially his arrival. Lieut. Barnet found the Consul at his residence, but Iaboring under a severe attack of illness, which Beems to have come very snddenly upon him, as there waa evidence in his apartments that the moment the ship had been signalized at day-1 lights he had made preparations for his visit ou board; but being, now too ill, he excused himself to Lieutenant Barnet for not being able to accompany him to the authorities; asked that his nephew might visit him, and stated that he would visit the Commodore the moment he felt able, and having made these re- marks; sat down; when Lieut. Baruet observing that ‘he was distressed, let, but had scarcely crossed the tireshhold of the room, when he heard a heavy fall, and returning to the apartment, found him extended at full length on the or provement, it was immediately cared for, and the ba msi tothe forces called to his aid, and as soon as possible he was visited by both the surgeons of this ship, the junior remainiug with him till 4 A. M. of the 25th, when he breathed his last, without = been able to communicate a single sentence it other than slight signs of recognizing fhe resence of his nephew. The disease or attack seems to have been a rapid ‘and irremediable “ cerebral congestion,” which no are or skill could relieve. ‘The decease of Col. Hart having thus taken place while he was engaged in the active duties.of the consulate, It would not be singular if he has left Rome official duties or correspondence in an un- Gnished state. The most important, however, to our commercial interests, so far as we can discover, is the unfinished business of the American brig Ame- Tica, of Matapoissett, lately condemned in this port (and now here unsold) a3 unseaworthy, but in this particular case Commodore Crabbe has provided b: appointing an agent, and will inform the depai mee Tegarding thia and all other circumstances one ad EMRE the 25th, the flag of the Consulate an was lowered at half mast, the authorities rotted of the decease of the Consul, and a request made by Commodore Crabbe that the Officers and seamen, marines and es mous land at the proper time with arms and eaquipm ipments requisite for pay paying the proper nied jonora to the remains of the deceased—all of which was = cheerfully ted by the Captain General, reaing’ his deep regtet that sel nee to wale Coon ‘would oe his accompa a Seg Ap poems ut that all the departnen of = jesty’s goverument should be represented. next day (yesterday, the 25th) was the festival posta the = Fevers oh ¢ auniversary of the defeat of Lord is fleet on this island in 1797, it “ard feemed necessary that the funeral should take place in the evening of the 24th, and be author ies and foreign consuls were accordingly eee they desired to be) to be present at 6 oe accordance with this arrangement, the officers, band, seamen, marives (infantry), in full uniform, were landed at 5 o'clock P. M. ‘There was a very active and a very buoyant time at the Stock Exchange to-day. Every stock on the list ad- vanced, some considerably. Erie and Reading were in very great demand. Nearly seven thousand shares o! Reading were sold, principally in large lots, and for cash, Nearly five thousand shares of Erie were sold—the bulk for cash; and at the opening Stato stocks and railroad bonds were freely offered and as freely taken, There was a sale of Louisiana 6’s, in one lot of $100,000, at 92, and 4 small lot sold afterwards at an advance of 34 per cont IMinois Central Railroad bonds sold to the extent of about $160,000—almost entirely for cash—at an improve- roent, Cumberland Coal shows a slight advance; and from the movements going on in certain quarters, wo should not be surprised to sce an advance of some conse- quence. It is about as good a stock as can be found in the street for speculation. Any one having more money than they know what to do with, who is dis~ posed to risk a portion of it om a fancy stock, could not do better than to take a ‘flyer’ in Cumberland. leveland and Toledo advanced to-day, with proity active sales, The present price is dividend on, and not ex-divi- dend, as reported by » cotemporary. At the first board y Virginia 6's advanced 44 per cent; Erie Bonds, 1875, 3; Illinois Central Bonds, 1; Harlem, 14; Cumberland, 44; Erie Railroad, 4; Panama, 1; Galena and Chicago, 1} Reading, 1; Michigan Central, 2; Michigan Southern, 2; Minois Central Railroad, 44; Cleveland and Toledo Rail- read, 3g. All the Western railroad stocks were in active demand at the advance, and closed firm, with an upward tendency. Michigan Southern and Galena and Chicago will take the lead and keep it, entirely upon their real merits. The steamship Washington, from this port for South- ampton and Bremen, to-day, carried out $70,315 in Ameri can gold, Total shipment for the week, $323,801, At the second board the upward movement continued in full force, with pretty active sales. Cumberland ad- vanced 34 per cent ; Galena and Chicago, 1; Harlem, 3; Erie, 3¢ ; Readit Railroad, 34. There were no sales of Hodson River Railroad this afternoon. This morning there was a sale at 363g per cent, the lowest we have no- ticed for along time. The condition of this company can- not certainly be understood. ‘The gross earnings of the road during the year ending September 30, 1864, amounted t0....0..00446 . $1,753,986 35 Operating road, "$1,150,076 “14 ray $9,428 09; rent and leases, $138,415 23 7 interest, $539,458 99........ Deficiency, Sept. 80, 1854.. $84,201 00 ‘The gross earnings of this road for the year ending September 30, 1855, were $1,869,804. Increase on last year, $115,818. Deduct from this 74 per cent operating expenses, and we have left $30,113. If the other items of expenditure remained the same as in 1854, there was a de- ficiency on the 80th of Sept., 1855, of $54,178, and not one cent reseryed for dividends or depreciation. Upon what possible ‘Minas any person 4s induced to hgld Hudson River Railroad stock under this state of things we cannot imagine. They are either ignorant of the present condi- tion of the company, and the ultimate fate of the stock— total annihilation—or they cling to that most absurd of all hopes, that the great consolidated Central Company intends to buy them up at fifty per cent. It is beginning to be conceded that the Central capital is already about large enough; that it has taken in of bad and worthless roads a sufficient quantity, without swallowing the Hudson River Railroad at $12,000,000. Besides, no Legislature could be induced to add another dollar to the immense money power already fastened upon its vitals. Any legislator who should vote for such a bill would be tarred and feathered by his consti- tuents on his re(urn home, and deservedly so. ‘An officer of the Galena and Chicago Railroad Company was recently asked by a large stockholder, what he con- sidered the stock of the company worth. His answer was that when it touched 150 per cent, it would begin to approximate its actual value as a permanent investment. Holders of the stock can form a pretty correct idea from this of what it is worth, and govern themselves accord- ingly. Any holder not obliged to realize who sells at anything below 150 per cent, or even at that, makes a mistake, and will see it before he gets much older, ‘The exports from this port last week were quite heavy, and full one-half of the aggregate was in breadstuffs. To all parts of the continent we aro exporting flour, wheat and corn. To the British pro- vinces, to Sough America and all the West India islands, breadstuffs are going in large quantities. Our importa- tions last week of general merchandise were somewhat larger than usual, while the aggregate is not above the average. There continues, however, a good demand for certain styles of goods and desirable fabrics, such as black silks, velvets, &c., with other foreign goods, and prices are well maintained. Cloths and satinets of fine qualities are in light stock and firm. Mouselin de laines are dull, especially older styles and patterns, which aro more or less unsaleable, Ginghams are without altera- tion. Drills, owing to a fair foreign demand and steady home trade, aro firm. Ticks are also firm, with limited sales, Corset jeans are in good demand, and have a ten- dency to higher price. Printing cloths are in good sup- ply, and quotations do not vary materially from those of the previous week. Brown sheetings and shirtings are dull and difficult of sale, without some concession in prices, Bleached sheetings are also dull, and sell quite slowly. Cotton duck is in better demand, at steady prices. The receipts of foreign dry goods have been larger for the past month than for the same period last year, All new styles of desirable and seasonable goods have found ready purchasers at full prices, while old styles and fabrics have been sold off, through auction stores, to the highest bidder. Plaid goeds aro still in Yogue, and sell well at good prices. This season’s de- mand for French goods has stimulated the demand for increased importations trom that quarter, and heavy shipments are sail to be on their way hither, both by sailing vessels and by steamers. Such a fact, when apecie would almost certainly be called for sooner or later, to pay for the bulk of them, formerly excited mach apprengnaion. But aot 00 now, The case ix very didterent, ‘The deficiency of the harvest in Germany and in France will enable us to pay for all the goods ‘from France we shall want’for consumption, im breadstuffs, and, if we are economical, leave a balance in our favor. We can also supply England with produce sufficient to keep down the price of sterling bills. Im domestic goods the low stages of water in the streams of New England have to some extent influenced production. Many descriptions have continued to maintain great firmness. Osnaburgs are in good demand and prices firm, Denims are held at former prices. Prints are heavy, and some sales have been reported, in lots, ata decline. Lawns are plenty, and prices without improvement, There is a better de- mand for cotton warp, and black mixed is at $125 4 $1 35. Satinets are in fair request. Tweeds of desirable descriptions are active, at full prices. Keutuecky jeans are dull, Flanoels and blan- kets are in fair demand, without change iu prices. Other wool fabrics are generally firm. Cotton flannels are in light stock and prices firm. The past week’s business in domestic dry goods has been quite large, The season for this class of goods, however, ¢s- pecially as faras the trade of tho distant South and South-western States is concerned, is drawing to a close, while the near trade, which, though buying usually less heavily at any one period, generally extend their busi- ness more over the year, from the great fueilities they possess of communication, Upon the whole, the dry goods trade may congratulate itself on having enjoyed the Jargest and most. remunerative business experienced for several years past.
