6 NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1855. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. mONEY MAREE Sarvmpay, Sept. 20—6 P. M. ‘There was a better feeling in the stock market to-day; but most of the purchases were on time, buyer’s option. ‘There were very large transactions in sll the leading se- curities. At the first board, Indians 6’s advanced % per cent ; Diinois Central Bonds, 3g ; Cumberland, %; Erie Railroad, %{ ; Michigan Southere, 1; Reading » %; Cleveland and Toledo, 4. Hudson Railroad declined 3 percent; Minois Central Railroad, 3; Cleveland and Pitts- burg, 3<. JIllinois Central bonds sold to the extent of $160,000, All other bonds were qui: After the adjournment of the board, the following stocks were sold at auction by A. H. Muller :— 200 sha Francis Life Boat CO ..... 4 ..0- ree ane 250 do. Marble and Stone Carving Co., of N. ¥"::. 12034 250 do. Newton Copperfaced Type Co’... 6 At the second board prices improved a fraction. Erie advanced, 35 per cent; Cumberland, 3; Reading Rail- road, 3s; Hudson Railroad, 34; Illinois Central Bonds, Bonds, %; Cleveland and Toledo, 3. Our remarks this morning about the New York Central Railroad Company bave produced a fluttering in the hive, The managers and their immediate friends are like a nest of hornets when 4 long pole is thrust among them. At first they are dis- posed to resist the intruder, but by keeping up the atir- ring, they finally disperse and leave the long pole in pos- session, The rural districts have been considerably agi- tated by the statements we have lagely made concerning this company and the arrival of several operators from along the line looks rather ominous.. The fact is that when the rottenness ofsuch a huge monster as the Cen- tral is exposed, @ desperate effort is made by cortain cliques to sustain, and if possible inflate the market prices, to calm the apprehensions of out- side holders. Combinations are therefore formed for purchasing, and the immediate efloct is seen in a temporary advance in prices, This ia the time for small holders to realise. When speculators are buying to keep up the market, is the time for out- siders to'sell. This action is only spaimodic and cannot be sustained. It would have been beiter to have sold a few weeks since, but the fiscal year is nearly closed aud ‘the next annual report will not be at all satisfactory to those who hold the stock at anything like current tes. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity andvalue of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption, for warehouse, and also the withdrawals from warehouse, uring the week ending avd including Thursday, Sept. 27, 1855:— is Movements 1N ForriGn Dry Goope. More activity is discernable in cotton flannels, at strength- ening figures. The supply is light and decreasing. A moderate business is being transacted in denims, drills ‘and duck, within our old range. Ginghams are ia fair request and are firm, There is not mach movement in lawns; manufacturers are engaged on spring styles, of which a good supply is promised. Nankeens have not varied. Osnaburgs are saleable and steady, Printing cloths are less freely offered at full prices, but rule quiet. Prints appear inactive at irregular rates. Stripes and ticks display no really new feature. Woollen goods are in moderate stock and are pretty firmly held, but are not very brisk. A fair inquiry prevails for blankets at previous prices. There ix considerable animation in cassimeres, cloths and doeskins, at unchanged figures. Flannels are quiet and rather languid. Jeans and lin- seys seem less active, and infirm in value. Mouselin de taines are tolerably brisk and buoyant. A fair demand exists for satinets, at former quotations. Shawls are un- altered. Tweeds are attracting increased attention, at steady rates. Foreign fabrics are less freely offered than they are needed, and on this account the business is somewhat restricted ; but as far as regards prices there is no no- ticeable change. ‘The imports are quite moderate, aud though mainly entered for consumption direct, they seem insufficient to maintain a good assortment on the market. ‘Those having desirable supplies are fluding ready pur erefor. at wnions poe SAS those whose stocks aro not exactly suited to the taste of purchasers experience considerable difficulty in selling them, and when they do effect a sale it is only by consenting to accept such prices as are offered there- for by buyers, These are the leading features of the trade in every channel. ‘The qvantity and value of certain articles imported into this port during the week ending, and including Fri- sy day, Sept. 28th, 1855, were as follows :— Commenckor Tux Port or New Youk—Vauwn or Imports.
