2 ee Ee 6 INANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. psa: MONEY MARKET. - Sarurpay, Aug. 25—6 P. M. The stock market continues heavy and depressed. ‘All stocks fell off to-day but Cleveland and Toledo, and that was bolstered up by the efforts, of a clique cof speculators, who distributed orders through the ‘etreet so widely that most of the brokers at the ‘board were buyers. It is a spasmodic movement, which will terminate after a few convulsive kicks. At the first board Indiana 5’s declined } per cent; Tllinois Central Bonds, 1; Canton Company, 3; New york Central Railroad, 14; Erie Railroad, }; Har- tem, }; Reading, 3; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 1. Cleveland and Toledo advanced 2 per cen’. State stocks were quite active to-day. Two lots of Virgi- nia 6’s of $50,000 were sold this morning, both bear sales, for a decline. Erie and Reading were sold to- day in large lots, principally for cash. The market is pressed down by'the operations of holders. Par- ties who purchased at low prices are now realizing, and the result is just what we long ago anticipated. The fancies will go down a long way before they will find a permanent resting place. They have been carried up along with other stocks, simply by the force of speculation, and now that holders and outsiders have commenced looking about they will thin out their supplies by getting rid of the poor and keeping the good. At the second board the market wasa shade bet- ter for some stocks, but there was no demand of con- sequence. Western railroad stocks of a fancy char- acter were dull and depressed. Most of the sales are washes, got up by speculators for arise to sustain the market. By operations of this kind they get higher quotations reported than actual sales would show and give a fictitions tone to the market. We shall see one of these days stocks of the kind we al- jude to drop down several per cent, and then there will be considerable anxiety to get out first. The steamship Union, from this port for Havre, to-day, carried out $595,831, and the steamer Leba- non, for Liverpool, $293,526 95 in gold bars and coin. ‘The transactions at the Assistant Treasurer's ‘office to-day were as follows: Paid on Treasury account... Received on Treasury account, Balance on Treasury account Paid for Assay office Paid on disbursing ch Balance to the credit of all s ‘The receipts to-day include $50,000 The steamship Geo. Law, at this port from Aspin- wall, brings San Francisco dates to the st of Au- gust and one and a quarter million of dollars in gold on freight.
