————————— Our Indiana Correspondence. Canwatron, Ind., June 1, 1854. The Cotton Mills at the West and South—Are they Profitable? Your money articles give us daily assurances of the abundance of capital in your city for all legiti- Tate investments that hold out anything likea cer- tain promise of even moderate profits. In your editorials are frequent intimations that you have, on ‘the seaboard, a surplus of men of energy aud skill, who have the confidence of men of capital, yet can- ‘not find regular and profitale employment ut home. ‘Your merchants seem to be too abundant; your com- meree yields but moderate returns; and there, as all ‘over the country, the dividends on existing railroads offer no for the construction of more. Allow me, then, to call the attention of such of your readers as have more money and energy than ‘Can be employed at home, to the certain and large profits that now doattend, and, under good manage ment, must always attend, the combination of the ‘surplus labor, surplus coal, and surplus cotton in this valley. New York is now almost as near to the woal-beds of the lower Ohio as Boston was but 2 few years ago to the waterfalls of New England; and New York can as easily manage cotton mills here as Boston can manage cotton mills there. The power and surplus labor are here un- limited. There, both are costly and unreliable ; we hhave the material and the market close at hand There, both are remote. When the Cannelton cotton mill was building, some of the New England manufacturers took special pains to advise everybody interested in our move- ments that we had not the ability to put up and ope- rate a first class cotton mill ; that we could not fill it with reliable “‘help ;” that we must, of necessity, buy our cotton in New Orieaus and sell the goods in the seaboard cities ; and therefore could make no saving in the transit of material or produce. They very nearly accomplished the object they had in view. The reliance placed on their opinions and predictions seriously embarrassed the operations of theit infant rival bere, and nearly strangled it in the cradle. ‘ Our community, however, are now beginning to understand the true facta in the matter. Lat two first class cotton mills have been put up in the ‘Weat—one here and the other at Lebanon, ‘Tennewee. The operations of each show a coat. of manafactare below the average coat in New England of an equivalent cloth. Each thas obtained its materia) from the nearest point of its growth, and at an immense saving of coat. Each has sold its product near home at an immense saving of transit expenses; and each has found a great abundance of suitable labor in its immediate neighborhood. Unfortunately, the mill at Lebanon was bornt down last year, yet not until its tions had fally demonstrated the propriety of ing the joom and the spindle nearer to the The ouly first class mill in the Southern States is at Graniteville, S.C. In that, the leading facta are the game as here. Mr. Greate, ite founder, knew too much about the business to frightencd from his Feed vod gs his stockholders, fortunately, had full in his judgment. From Mr. Grge's last report it appears that the net earnings of that mill seee B per cent. -over 21)“ 4 reason to anticipate Before the Lebanon mill and that the company have larger dividends in future. ‘was burnt it was earning from 20 to 25 per cent net. _. The earnings of the Cannelton cotton mill, since it has been Py eee have not been made pub- lic, but it is onde: that they are satisfactory to the stockholders. I have not the leisure to go into the details of the modua operandi, but I state position with the atmost confidence— that were men of business and ca) in New York now to occupy the coal fields of Indiana and Mlinois, bordering the Ohio, in oor free States, or the waterfalls of the Tennessee, in the slave States, and go forward in the mannfac- ture of cotton with the same energy that the Boston men of business and capital in building up Lowell, Lawrence, and Manchester, the accession of wealth to New York, to the country, and to those directly interested in the operation, would be such as has never ve been wituessed. in a quarter of a century we should have as complete 4 COTO, of the products of cotton aa we now have of the cotton i We shall, assuredly, monopolize this branch 0 manufacture. The question is simply one of time We have the chea; material, the cheapest fuel, the food, the least cost of transit and the lightest direct and indirect taxes of any locality on earth. We mast, therefore, manufacture the cheap est goods. Common Pleas. Before Hon. Judge Daly. ORDRE FOR ATTACHMENT AGAINST THE REFRACTORY WITNESSES IN THE CASE OF “#AM" AGAINST THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. FINANOIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Mowvar, August 13—6 P.M. ‘The stock market opened this morning buoyant, with considerable activity in aome of the most pro- minent railroad stocks. Eight months of the cur- rent fiscal year have elapsed, and from the returus for that period it will not be difficult to form a cor- rect estimate of the net earnings for the year. In the last four months of 1554 the net income of the company amounted to $1,126,454 35. At the same rate of increase on this that has been realized during the first eight months, the net revende for the laxt four months of the current fiscal year will amount to $1,802,326 96, which, added to that acta- ally realized in the first eight months, will give for the year an aggregate net income of $3,236,619 85, ‘The actual result will be something between these totale. The receipts for the year will be very near a million and a quarter. The new direction are doing great things for the stockholders—increasing their revenue and decreasing their rmaning expenses, and if they continue the good work, thas well begun, we can guarantee their reelection to office. The stock must Le selling below ita value—at all events, there iano margin for fall, and it may bring mach higher prices than are now ruling. The present prow perity is not altogether exhibited in the increased gross earnings. Great economy is now practised in the expenditures. The current expenses have been lergely rednced, and the saving per annum wil! be eqns) to a small dividend on the stock. ‘The Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad appears to be unknown among stock speculators of Wall street. It appears to be the impression among certain railroad financiers that becaase the company never made its appearance in Wail street aa Lorrow- ers of money, it must be a bogus concern; bat we caa isform those gentiemen that it is an ac- toal tong fide company, with the necessary re- sources to coustract its road withont Wall street aid, ‘That ia enoagh in ite favor, without soying anything more. The rood runs from Galves. ton (the only port om the Gulf of Mexico for nine bundred miles, where large vessels can enter) to Houston, and thence to Henderson, a distance of two hundred and twenty miles, through the most fertile and productive part of Texas. It intersects with the Harrisburg road, now completed, and on which the cars are running, and with the Red river road at Houston, neariy finished. The cotton freight alone will pay 8 profit on the entire cost of the road, snd the Mate of Texas donates absolutely 10,250 pore of land & cack mile Of road laid, The dre ection is now ready to receive the superstructure, and the iron has been purchased, and is now on ita way from Engisnd. The reason the enterprise ia not known here, is to be found in the fact that no at- tempt has been made to borrow money in Wall street; but the road and its progress are continually referred to and spoken of in the Galveston papers. ‘The company engaged in carrying out this enter- prise bas no stock designs, no wish to speculate in its bonds, and only desires to be allowed to build the road, and not to be injured by those who should be ita friends. This road, when completed, will drain the State of Texas, north, east and west; and to any one acquainted with its geography, it will be evident that there can be no more feasible enterprise, or one better calculated to develope the resources of that young and growing State, than the Galveston, Hous- Railroad. toa and Henderson The annexed statement exhibits the average daily movement in the leading departments of the banks of this city, during the week precediug Saturday morning, August 11, 1855 :— New Yor« Crrr Banks.
