A friend bas called my atteution to a letter from Bugle, Switzerland, addressed to you by Emanuel Weiss, acd published in your paper of the 22d inst. Mr, Weies complains of unfair treatment by the War Department, because he was not employed to select and purchase the camels about to be intro- duced into this country for military purposes, un- der the late appropriation by Congress, particutar- ly as he claims to have origiaated the idea as early as January, 1849, and to have subsequently de- voted much time and money in fartherance of the Now, sit, to undeceive this gentleman in this and the public also, to whom he has ap- pealed through the columns of your wide spread |, it ia only necessary to say that the attention ef our government was called to this subject by a official letter from an officer of the army, in Agri 1843, nearly eix years prior to the arrival of Mr Weiss in the United States. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Turspay, Jaly 31—6 P.M. ‘There was a more active and s more buoysnt market this morning. At the first board Virginia 6's advanced } per cent; Missouri 6’s, {; Louisiana 6's, 4; Illinois Central Bonds, 4; Cumberland Coal, 4; New York Central Railroad, }; Erie Railrosd, j; Reading Railroad, }; Michigan Central Railroad, 1; Pacama Railroad, 1; Llinola Central Railroad, 4, Wisconsin and Lake Shore Railroad declized 4 per cent. There was considerable astivity in some of the leading stocks. Readiug was in demaed at the improvement. Cumberland took quite a start to- day, and closed firm at the advance. Erie was mere active than usual, anda good deal of cash tteck changed hands. State stocks and railroad bonds were in better demand, at better prices, and there seemed to be a better feeling in the street in regard to stocks generally. We see nothing in the bank report calcalated to cause this favorable change. The decrease in deposita is by no mesns ap evcouraging feature, and as regards the move- ment in specie, the banks are only able to pre serve their supply by draining some other section of country. The exports are larger then the im- ports, and the supply in the country at large is weekly diminishing. The large receiots at the Custom Houe from duties on customs, show a heavy importatioa. After the adjournment of the board the following sales of stocks and bonds were mede at suction by Simeon Draper :— $1,000 Flushing RR., lat mo: ) int. added... 60 8,000 Great Western (11) do do... ............ 70 2,000 Lake Erie, Wabash and St Louis, do., do. | 824 7,C00 Ohio and Mias. KR , 2d mortgage, do. 40% 9 50% At the eecond board the market was steady, with. out much activity. Reading is the most active stock on the list, and witbout doubt the best pur. chase at present prices. The sales this afternoon were equa! to those of all other railroad stocks com- bined, and the margin for improvement is suffi- ciently wide to attract speculators. The auction sale of 2,541 shares cf the Tilincis Central Railroad, ordered by the company for non- peyment of izsta'ments on the stock, will be ander the direction of A. H. Nicolay, as auctionser. Tne ale wil) take place on the 3ist of Acgutt. ‘There were some very sbsurd romors aficat (2 Wal! street to day in regard to the Mechanics’ Bick but they were all refuted and dispersed Curing the dey. We understand that F. W. Edmonds, the cesbier, bas resigned; and although soillcited by the Board of Directors to withdraw his resignation, re- fuses to do #0, and will doubtless adhere to that determination. The ¢ifficalty arose from a little misunderstanding relative to the internal edmials tration of the affairs of the bank, and not from any derangement of accounts or deficit in fonds. The matter never sbouid have been heard of octwide the beck, sod probpbly never would but for the mais volence of the party causing ali the exoltemens. ‘The steamship Canada, from’ ston (or Liverpool tomorrow (Wednesday) will take out abou: seven haxdred thousand dollars in gold. : The ennexed statement exbibita the operations of the Asistant Treasurer's office of this city da- ting the month of Jaly:— Ovmon ov tax Aseurant ‘IRmasURER Untre Stars, N. ¥. Whether the anticipation of « larger comand for money is realized or not, the effect of an agitation of the question isto restrict and clog money opsrations. and it is more from this than anything ola» that we owe the preseat aligat change in the condition of our market The Boston Journal of the 30th inst. gives the following report of a mesting of the stockholders of the Eastern Railroad Company. The report of the committee on the subject of the late frauds was very lengthy:— It commences with the charter of the road in 1826, and traces ite bistory, together with that of the cona set: ing roads, upto the preseat time. It approves of toe building of branches ot the road, saying that on the they have been prosperous, But outsiée opera, tions have worked differently. The first was the loan to the Eazox Railroad, which at first was $90.000, out hich now smounts to $256,947 ; and which is secared by @ Grat mortgage of the rosd. In addition to this Joan, the company has guaranteed over $400,000 of the bonds ef jthe Kasex Company. The franchise and pro- perty of the Essex will provably soon become the pro- perty of this corporation. The next outside operation, which has not proved ad. vantageous, was the taking of s thousand sheres of the Grand Junction Railrosd. This stock cost $50 8 share, and is now prized at $308 oes of the South Reading Branch Railrosd. The of this transaction was rehearsed, and it was said to have cost the company $201,000. The proceeds of the business on this road have never paid ths runing expenses. he next outside opemntion wan the purchase of the Saugus Branch road. & was originally bought in self defence. The cost is estimated st $50,000, of which $10.06 is unpaid. ‘The neat was the purchase of 496 ahares of the (reat Falls vod South Berwiek road, at $100 » share, and also uaranteeing their bonds to the amount of $10,000, @ stock of this road not of sufficient yalue to pro tect the debt of this cor The guaranty of the boads of the Graad Junction roat to the amount of $151,060, was next alluded to, and said it was reasonably secured The endorsement of untea tor the Kast Boston Ferry Company, to the amount of $15,000, in wine safe. ‘The extension (nto Boston was next alluded to, aad it was anid to have cost $175,804. ‘The report then spoke of the present comdition of the corporation, commencing with allusions to Mr. Tucker man.
