It was a crime of go rare atrocity a# to sho-k this whole community, and create tne moat ia'ense excitement im the vicinity where it was peryewated. Im many of its cironmstances it reainds one of the horrible Wickham tregedy on Long [-land lass year. In this case as in that, the victim was @ farmer of respectability, liviog ina retired place. fo this case as in tha’, the perpetrator of the offence was in the employ of the sufferer; acdin thie as in that, the alleged cause of the offence was unrequited ‘ove. The reeuit here mey be leas fatal than ia the former ipetaxce; but, as you wili see by tha circumstances aé I proceed to reJate them, it was not in conse- quence of any less fiendish strocity on the part of the cerminal. The name of the wounded man is Chauncey E. Wood. He Ives abou! two miles south of the village of Faitbsvep, and about a quarter of a mile from apy other dwellicg. He czrries on a smali farm, which he owns in coanection with his mother and an crmarricd sister. Wood ia stout, heavy man, abou; thirty-s x years of age, He also is unmarried, and be and iis mother and jc are the only occu- pants of the house, excep: # hived man. Three monids sgo yesterday Mr. Wood engaged a man calling oimwelf Thomas Cook to agsist oim for the season in his farmisg. Cook was a stranger, and was poorly wled at the time. He immediately commenced work, and cvaiinued on up to last San- oay, aa abientive, willing andindustrivushsad. He ate at the tabe with the family, and was treated as cue of them. He slept in a room on the same floor with Mr. Wood’s—oppozite to it, and only separated from it by & small entry or passage way. This waim weather the doors of both rooms were lett wide open though the a‘ght. Last Sundsy night, between tha.houra of elevan and twelve, when M-. Wood was sound asleep in his bed, Cock enerec bis room with a broadaxe in his band, ard struck him & beavy blow, with the edge, over the lett ese. It happenec, from the di- rection of the blow, or the duliness of the edge, or some other ciroum-tapce, tia the skull was nos broken, and the ax» glaaced down the left cheek, meking a long frightful gash. [his awskeaed Mr. Wood, and he rained nimaeif up and giretched out his haads, ander ine sudden impulse, to feel whist it waa. Cook then guve buna blow over the left arm. Cock cont.naed to chop away fariousty, hit- ting Bir. Wood's left leg once, and cutting twice deeply into hia righ: thigh, Mr. Wood kicked off as much as he coali with his fest, sad bit him a hard blow ia tae breas: witu his tess which knocke! nim bask agatst the side of the room. ifr. Wood then rushed f-om the room dowa the stairway leapicg sevea or eight stairs, Tae blood was gushing trom his wouuds, and ha he hurt 4is foot baaly by striking oa the eigaof a sieir. Apprebecding that Couk migat follow him he pagzed on to the back kiwhon, aud arm-d him- relf with a long pivce of iron—an old fashioned “fire elios” or p Ker. They tol lowed ou after him, aad, on entering Cook's reom, fsucd the broadaxe lying on hie bed covered with biood, the window up, ead Cook gone. This was the first that Mr. Wood knew what kiod of a weapon had basn ussd egainst him or who had used it. Cook says that when he first eiruck Wood, Wood called him by tame, from whica be eupposed that he roc ognized hm. Buti’ appears that he was only shoating to him for bai, which, aupposiog that he was sleeping in the nextyoom, be would very naturally do—and that be bed 1o idea that his own hired man was eeaiirg nim exch death bicws. col cscaped through the window of his room, by lettin: tinaoit gown from the st‘) by his hards, witheut i jury, alshough the room «A in the second story ot nevee. The name of ths reignvor is Woliam Allard. Oa teaching bis house, Miss Wocd rapped on the door, but receiving Lo answer she opensd it and went in. Mr. Allard woke up, out Miss Wood was eo much exhausted thet she craid not speak. Sha only groaned in the most distreesed maauer, which greatiy alsrmed Mr. Allard. soon, however, she teoovered herself snflicieatly to arci ‘ulate, “Caaun- cey is murdered!” Mr. allard calied his hired man ond started for Wood's house. He sent bis man o the village for Dr. Wakefield, aud on his way the man one or two others of the scighbors. Ine short time a number had gathered at Mr. Wood's hougs, but ao one started in pursait of th ¢ iminal until morning. About daylignt intelligence of what bad occurred was commuatsated to Mr. J. P. Willard. first constable of the town, who spread the rews through the viliage and then repaired to Mr. Wood's house, and tried to get on the track of the culprit. He succeeded in firding prints of stocking feet, but could not follow them more than about huilf a mile. The bell was racg and a csnnon was fired on the common. These sigvals rapidiy called the in- habitants of the town togecher to learn what bad bappened. The meeting was organised by the choice of Burnebas Eis, E:q.,as chauman. Mesa- while the Selectmen bad gut together and aiver- tised a reward of fifty doliars for the arrest of Cook. The pursuers encountered a shou- eaud romo's, but after # day of bard labor, having scoured # pretty extensive region of country, they returned rome withous their prey. The folowing moming Constable Willard and many overs continued to follow up the most au- thentic reports of the man’s having been seen in Various directions, and their commendabie exertions Were protracted sometime atter the fagttive, with out their knowledge, had been secured by two strepgers. Yesterday forenson, about eleven o'clock, two re- sidents of t, woose names { could no} learn, who had been induced sy tho ndvertisoment of thd Selectmen to start in the parsuit, were tr.veliiag in tne rosd near mcuatein, abouttwenty miles ¢itent from the scere of the crime, when tney saw & man come trom the moun'sin inte the road. ‘They thought frcm the description in ths handbili tat it must be Cock, One of them stopped um, and without any attempt at resisiacce, he owned up the whole matter, and surrendered bimeelf into thelr hards.
