‘FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. aan Rao MONEY MARKET. Tavrspay, Jaly 12—6 P. M. ‘Tho market was dail to-day, and the bears had a ‘trifle the advantage. As compsred with yesterday, Erie declined {; New York Central, 4; Reading, 4; ‘Cleveland and Toledo, 3; Cumberland Coal, 4; Ni- ‘earagua Transit, j. The business done in bonds ‘waa amall, except in the Illinois Canal, of which several lote changed hands at a dacline of 1 per cent on yesterday’s prices. At the second board the market wis steady, but ‘there was not much doing in any stock. There is evidently a scarcity of buyers, but holders are not ‘obliged or disposed to make any coucessions of con- sequence. The beara see in the future an impor- tant change inthe money market; trey believe ia a serious Grain upon our supply of specie, and their minds are filled with all sorts of gloomy things. It ip very curious to hear this class of spsculs‘ors pre- @icting ruin snd desolation,"wai'e every ore else is anticipating great abundance and prosperity. Now that the harvests have been pretty generally ae- cored, ad we havea guaranty of plenty, it isreally refreshing to listen to these croake a, We koow that bresd and potatoes will bo cheap, and that is ‘worth more than all the fancy stocks and fancy spe- culations in Wall street. Mowey is easy; in exchange nothing is doing, The report of the Committee ofene Baakers’ Con- vention at Syracuse, in favor of a general clearing house for the country banks, is much discussed and generally approved, The following dividends have been declared :— The Beekman Fire Insurance Company, a semi-an- nual dividecd of seven per cent, payable on the lst of August. The present falling off has been chiefly in woollen manufactures, metals, hardware, ready- made clothing, and beer and ale, thus indicating that the diminution in the shipments to Australia apd America is still the principal cause of the change. With regard to imported commodities, the totals show remarkable steadiness in the home consump: tion, the quantities of the principal articles taken into use being very rearly the same as at this pe. riod of 1854. Sugar forms an exception, as it exhibits a considerable decline; but this is simply owing to the Jargeness of the suppiies taken by the trade during the four preceding months. Of bread- stuffa the arrivals have continued comparatively light. The imports of other articles have been gen- era)’y limited. Of dyes and dyeing stuffs the quan- tity has been about equal to an average; glass and jesther manufactures continue tosho# a decrease. Of metals, also, except tin, the supply has been smal), and timber presents a decresse both in importation and consumption. Guano and seeds still exhibit an increase. Stock Exchange.
