MOSBY MARKT. Tusspay, Jane 12—6 P. M. There is no activity in tre stock muket. Spson- lation has disappeared, and the fancies, as well as the more substantial securities, areneglected. Cum. berland and Erie were the most active stocks to-day, but in the absence of buyers, it is impossible to keep up even a show of activity. At the first board Dlino's Bonds advanced § percent; Illinois Raiiroad, 14; New York Contral Rail oad, }; Read ing Railroad, {; Cleveland and Toledo Raitroad, 14; Chicago and Rock Island, 2. Cumberland Coal de- clined j per cent. The abuniance of money and confidence of the public in productive railroad se- curities are clearly shown in the fact tbat prices are steadily advaxcing, without much etock being put in the market for sale. The buyers for investment tal amali lote, but it is diffioaltto get even small quantities of certain railroad stocks withou; ranning prices up rapidly. Western railroad s'ocks are in demand at the current quotations, but the dividend ¢ay is so near, and the rate is likely to be so larg», that holders are not disposed to sell. It will be seen by the sales today, that fancies have improved considerably within the past day or two. The following sales of stocks were made at auc- tion by Simeon Draper, after the adjournment of the board:— $9,000 Memphis Cit ‘ior 60 Marcantus ‘bonds, 1880.. . Ins. The Philadelphia Ledger mentious a report} cur- rent in that city of a ten per cent semi-annual divi- dend next month on Reading railroad shares. It also speaks of an intimation that there may be at the same time another stock dividend, covering some further expenditures legitimately chargeable to the account of capital. The Erie Railroad Company earned in May $461,- 894 48, against $500,651 47 for the same month last year, showing @ decrease of $38,756 99. This de- crease is attributable to the talling of in the lum- ber traffic, caused by the low prices ruling for that article. The Norwich and Worcester Railroad Company earned in May, $27,492 26, against $28,419 46 for the same month last year, showing a decrease of $477 38 for the month this year. The aggregate for the month of May was $572,000, and the sales thie month are likely to be equal to that figare at least. This is not to be looked at merely as a ale of lands, buf to the effect on the productiveness of the road as these lands come under cultivation, which will bs at once, as the eaues are to actual settlers. The American Mill Manufacturing Company, hav- ing purchased the patent right of Mr. H. Gardiner’s gold grinding mill, have organized for oporations under the general manufacturing law of this State, with @ capital of $500,000, divided inte 100,000 shares, at @ par value of $5 each. The macaine, the patent for which is now vested in this company, differs from all others in the principle upon which it acts, and it may prove superior to all others. ‘Phat, however, remains to be seen. It is the inten- tion of the company to put in operation at once one of these machines, and then we shall see whether it is really any bstter than the hundreds which have heretofore failed to answer the purposes required. The exportation ot cotton goods from Boston, from January 1 to June 8, this year, amounted to 13,345 packages, sgainat 12,076 for the same time last year, and 38,604 for the same time the year previous. It is said that manufacturers show but little anxiety to realize, and many of them prefer holding on for bigher prices. A movement is making by the friends of the Con- cord and the Manchester and Lawrence railroads to have an act paesed by the present seseion of the New Hampshire Legislature authorizing the uniting of the two corporations, and there is but little doubt that the application will be successful. This result would make a great saving in the expense of operating the roads, and will cause a great advance in the stocks of both roads, more especially in the Manchester and Lawrence. At the late session of the Massachusstts Legtsla- ture a charter was granted to the Bank of Mutual Redemption, the object being to establisha new institution for the transaction of the foreign money redemption business now carried on so successfally and profitably by the Suffolk Bank of Boston, the stockholders of the new institution being the vario: @ banks which have their notes redeemed in that city, A circulsr has been forwarded to each of the banks in the commonwealth inviting “hem to be repre- tented at a meeting to be held at the Tremont House in Boston, on the 21st instant, for the pur- pose of consulting together as to the best means of Putting said bank into operation under its charter, and as to the best manner of conducting the busi- ness for which the charter was obtained. In crease in five months this year, $60,529 98, The earnings of the Milwaukie and Watertown Railroad Company since the cpening to Ooone mowoc, thirty miles, have been $32,848 62. The tracters for the holders of the mortgage bonda of the Portamouth and Concord Railroad have taken possession of the property, and the road will Bow pase out ef the contro! of the original stoor- boiders inte the bands of such new compsny as may purchase it. The bonds amount to $350,000, and the rosd is forty seven miles long. The personal liability law of New Hampshire is ead to have eo- riously sffccted the ixteresta of this road. The Pcrtemonth Journal covsoles the peovie of that ity who have lost all their investment in this road, by urging upon them the reflection thet the enterprise has been of some benefit to the city. The report of the Railreud Commiseloners of Con- necticut gives the annexed facia relative to the operations of the lines in that State:— Bar.zoaps oF Connectiour. Number of roade im the State Grea erie during the wretiintenies<. ‘The income of company., + 81,172; 984 The greatest cost per mile is that of the New York and New Haven road, $80,329. The Hartford and New Haven cost $53,165; the Hartford aud Fiebkill, $30,296; and the Danbury and Norwaik $16,000 per mile. These roads have paid divi- dence—the Norwich and Worcester, the Ne « York, Provicence and Boston, and the Hartford, New Haven and Springfield. These dividends have amounted to $459,709. The persons carried in the cars have been 2,968,698, of which the Ne@w York and New Haven road carried 1,111,031. Two pas eepgers only have been killed—both on the New Haven road. Nineteen persons not pas- sengers bave been killed, and eight others in- jored. It will be ecen that tne net earniuge are but emall per cont on the actual cost of the roads. The roads are in debt $10,785,156, the interest on which, at eix per cent, wi.l absorb more than one- half of the net esrnings, leaving on a capital of more than eighteen millions, only about five hundred thougand dollars for dividends. Tais is the average. Some of the roads pay good dividends, while others pay nothing, and probably never will. Capitalists should bear in miad that proposals will be received by the Com nissioners of tae Canal Ford of this State fora loan of $1,500,000, until the 20th of Jane inst., at 12 o'clock, for which trapsferable certificates of stock will be issued in the nsme of the people of the State of New York, bearing interest at the rate of six per cent per au- num, payable quarterly on the first days of Jaaua- ry, April, July, and October in each year, and the principal reimbursable on the first day of July, 1873. The proposals may be for the whole, or any part of said loan not less than $5,000. All propo tals to be sealed up and endorsed ‘‘Loan for the payment of Canal Revenue Certificates,” and eu closed in am envelope directed to the Auditor of the Canal Department at Albany.
