TEENIE IEEE FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONBY MARKS. Mopar, May 28—6 P. M. ‘Quotations for stocks took quite a start upward to- ‘dey, and the market was more excited than we have known fer many days. State stocks, railroad bonds aad rallread stocks were all im active comand, and sold at prices considerably in advance of those ruling at the close om Saturday. At the first board Indians 5’s went up X per cent; Missouri 6’s, 2; Virginia 6’s, 1; Erie se- Cond mortgage, 1 ; Illinois Central, ; New York Con- tral 7's, %; Pemnsylvania Coal, {; New York Central Railroad, 3; Panama Railroad, 13; ; Reading Railroad, 3%; Galena and Chicago Railroad, %; Cleveland and To- Jede Railroad, %<. The leading dividend paying railroad stocks were operated in to « large extent, and nearly all improved on the opening prices, Reading touched the highest cash price of the searon today. The coal busi- mess thus far this year has been very profitable to all the transportation companies, and it is likely for the rest of the season to be even more profitable. Up to ‘he 24th inst., the quantity of anthracite coal brought © market frem the Schuylkill regions was 1,298,722 tons, against 1,132,541 tons to the same date last year, howing am increase of only 166,181 tons in the first six months of the present year. This ts not an average in- -erease for that district, and the deficiency must be made up en the last balf of the year, which commences on the Isteof June. On the 1st of July the Reading Railroad Com- pany raise the rate of toll thirty cents per ton, and it ts therefore for the interest of that company and all other -coal carrying companies that the bulk of transportation should be thrown into the last six months of the year, when tolls rule the highest. The Reading Railroad brought dewm 1,987,864 tons of coal from Dec. 1, 1853, to Dec. 1, 1864. In the first six months of that year only 777,526 tons were brought down, leaving 1,210,328 toms of the aggregate for the last six months, It there- fore appears that the earnings of the Reading Railroad in the last six months of the year are about double ‘these for the first six months, caused not only by the additional quantity of cosl carried, but by the addi- tional price for carrying. New York Central Railroad atock was particularly active to-day, at better prices, while Erie, ita competitor for Western travel and freight, ‘was negiected, without change in market value. There is very little doubt but that at prezent prices Erie is much the cheapest stock of the two, but, having been eompelied to exhibit its financial difficulties to the world, it has a bad same, The only differ- ence is that the Central has not yet been found out. It has not yet had an investignting committee overbauling its accounts ana making reports. The Erie Company has passed through all that, and is slowly re- covering from its effects. The Central will ultimately have te go through thesame ordeal. All these large, overgrown, bulky corporations, after a time, get dis- eased, and require a great deal of doctoring before they get into a healthy condition again, The New York Con- tral has been # long time in the hands of financiers, and tt must be in a very rotten condition. After the adjournment ef the board the feliowing sales of bonds and stocks were made by A. H. Nicolay:— 5,000 Chicago and Miss. R. R. 7" int, added 50 5,000 Cleveland and Tolede R. The heavy receipts from California, and the limited shipments te Europe, induced ‘us to expect a much greater addition te the supply of specie than that reported. Tho exportation during the present week will be large, and without an arrival from California with remittances of gold tea much greater ox- tent thaa usual by the Nicaragua line, the mext baak statement must show an important decrease im the stock of bullion in hand. The falling off im discounts ts in ac- cordance with the general expectation. It is well known that the banks have for some time past found it dificalt te got all they wamted of the right kind of paper, the contraction is more a matter of mecessity tha choice. The aggregate lime of discounts is now lowor than it has been since the 17th of February last, bat a little larger than at this time last year. The variations in deposits and circulation are of sesondary importaace, they do not bear so closely upon the money market as ements in the other departments. Stock Eixc!
