NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY,.MAY 17, 1855. Arrival of the Cahawba—Two Days Later from Havana. ‘The United States mail steamship Cahawba, R. W. Shufeldt, commander, from New Orleans on the 9th, and Havana om the 12th inst, arrived here last evening, in four days and nine hours from Havana. We have nothing of much importance to report from Havana. It was generally believed that the United States Gulf aguadron would soon retura to Havana, The Princeton and Jamestown were cruising off the coast. Commodore McCauley was at Key West. A rumor prevailed at Havana that General Concha would pardon Mr. Felix. The organization among, aud drilling of, the free colored population of Cubs, still continued. Yucatan Indians continue vo be introduced into Cuba, with the consent of the Mexican authorities. Nearly 200 were landed at Havana on the 1ith inst., and sold under a contract made previous to their arrival. It is said they were brought away by force. The Governor of Sagua la Grande has been restored to his post. Havana continues perfectly healthy, and business active for the reason. OUR HAVANA CORRESPONDENOR. HAVANA, May 12, 1855. Catalan Sense of Honor—Reward of a Traitor—The Din- ner Given to Munoz, Chief of Police—His Atrocious Conduct to Pinto—Case of Mr. Thompson — Rumored Es- cape of Prisoners from the Ponton. One of the numbers of the Cronica, published ia your Gity, received per last steamer, contains a letter dsted from here, which gives an account of # dinner recently at Le Grand’s restaurant to Munoz, the Chief of As, however, no mention is made of the conduct of Senor Munoz which procured him this high honor, [ take leave—there not being any news of importance this ‘iotning—to recapitulate some few of this man’s reoaut acts, which will go far to show how well worthy he ia of the compliment paid to bim. Permit me to premise that the murdered Ramon Piato and Munos were on terms of intimacy, so much so that on the morning of the arrest of the former Manoz seat up bis name to Pinto, who had not left his bed. He, bowever, instantly arose, and, bastily dressing himself, went down to receive the man whom he conceive! to be his friend. Speedily, thoogh, was he undeceived, for as he entered the room he was arrested and placed ia the custody of some of the harpies of Muaoz, who then commenced to search the house, bstray- ing by his want of delicacy an absence of every- thing like gentlemanly feeling. He mot on- ly tore open the private drawers of Mrs. Piuto, and with vulgar gaze examined into those little minu tie of her toilet which the refined woman ceems so saored as to keep them evan from her husband’s eyes, but he compelled the Misses Pinto to rise from tueit beds, and with sheeta thrown over their night attire, to witness this monster's search into all those little secret recesses of which young ladies are 20 partial; sach billet- deux and gage d’amour he found was narrowly scanaed, in the hope of discover ng some word or thought ex- viper that might give him a clue by means of which might make some important veries Then hia conduct to poor Pinto in the last hours of his life—his constant desire to induce the uofortupate man to betray those connected with him in his al plans, and when he found all other means fail, up to within five hours of the trme when Pinto kvew that he must dle, then—anI mentioned ina former letter—he offered Pinto his iife if he would betray hia supposed confederates. But it was all in vain. ‘Do not pester me,’ nobly replied the doomed man, ‘let me die as ho- norably as I have lived!” But Munoz, although thus foiled, did not leave his victim, hut was wit him util he ascended the fatal scaffold. "For this conduct these Catalans have given Munoz a public dinner, and I give him joy of the bonor done him. Instead of the Lieut, Governor of Sagua Is Grande having been dismissed, as was repor‘ei some little time since, it appears he has bren féied, and had high honor done him by th authoritive here. He bas returned t> agua Is Grande, where, I suppose, it will be scarcel possible for Mr. Thompeon longer to resi¢e. Is not this & pretty commentary upon *bs conduct of the present administration of the governmen: of the United States ? The number of cattle at market since our last haa ma- terially increased; but om the other hand the demand has been slow. Owing to the present high prices pur- chasers are not poe tocome into the marke; except to supply immediate wants, the impression being that next week prices bedowa to something like a rea: sonable standard. warm weather also contributes a little to depress themerket. Holders, nevertheless, are very stiff, and are not disposed to yield much. Tha’ave- rage of the market to-day may be quoted at $14 per 100 Ibs. Some few transactions are said to have been made ata fraction above that figure. It was thought that 200 or 300 head would remain over unsold, ws and calves steady. Veal plenty, and rather lower.
