®INANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY HASRKET. Monpay, May 7—6 P. M. ‘The stock market still tends downward. The reported wales are large, but the actual transactions are very Mmited. At the first board to-day Virginia 6’s declined ‘% per cent; Missouri 6’s; 3; Illinois fiee-land bonds, 34; Canton Company, }¢; Hudson Rallroad, %; Michi- gan Southern Railroad, %; Cleveland and Toledo Rail- road, 4; Panama Railroad, 3. Reading Railroad ad- vawced 3 per cent. The market appears to bein a ebronic state. Holders are strong, and not disposed to sell. They are pretty well filled up with stocks, and are not buyers to any extent. This works unfavorably for ‘the bears, while the class of bulls who look for imme- diate returns from an immediate advance are not Itkely ‘to realize their anticipations. The probability is, there- fore, that the brokers will have very little buy- wg and selling to do on outside account for some time, or until some violent change takes place in financial affairs. There are only four or five non- dividend paying stocks on the list, and these rale at such low prices that it does not take mueh money to carry them, and the loss of interest is metlarge. All the rest are more or less productive, and pay well upon the capital invested. So long as they continue to do so, and holders are not compelled to realize, it does not matter much about the market value ef the stock. The variation of a fraction or #0, from day to day, is of no consequence, and holders regard it but little, othe broker who looks to differences on his contracts, it ix of vital importance; hence their efforts to inflate and depress prices.
