om 3 Yew Yaavou NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, MAY 7, 1855, MONEY ma@KcBr. Suxvax, May 6-~6 P. M. The stock market closed yesterday very heavy. At ‘the first board there were quite lerge sales, aad buyers were plenty, but at the secon board the sellers freely Difered stocks at lower prices, without fimiiog purchasers toany extent For some time past a majority of the Board of Brokers have been bearing +tocks, but have been unable to depress prices much. Outsiders hive ‘been, and still contirur, large holders. The abuadaace of money has enabled tb to carry, ant the improve- ment going on in railrond etocks ax permanent invest » ments bas determined th:m to hold for higher prices. ‘The brokers have therefore been unable to get prices down much, under the most adverse circumstanzes. No Btock bas been pressiog upon the market; ani no one compelled to sell, tne brokers have hai very little Dusiness, and it has besn du'l times at the board. For ‘the purpese of making » show of business, time opera- fiona between different brokers have been carried Dut very little stock actually chaoged bands, an @utsiders are larger buyers than sellms, even a' @dvanced prices, In tho event of the money market becoming tight agaia, or avythiog oocurring in the internal affairs of the different companies, calculated: to destroy public confidence, the brokers stand in « position to bevefit by ig; but we see very sittle probability wf their making much moasy this yesr, by misfor- tunes of that kind. Tho chenges which hsve been mad An the management of our raiiroad companies are of eharacter that insures steady, gradual increase in Productiveness. The experience of the past cost too gnuch to be easily forgotten, and it will, we trust, be a Jong time before our ra‘lroad managers fall again Anto euch errors, These stocks being held largely by Outsiders, the market will not be burdened with them @ven undera moderate stringency in money mitters, @Mutsiders are not engaged in any great’ speculative ‘movement, and those engaged in legitimate lines of busi” mess are very much contracted in their operations. ‘They are out of debt, and doing a very limit:d business. Contraction has been going on #0 long that capital bas g@ccumulated im the hands of the commercial classes, nd they have converted itinto the most substantial pro- ductive stocksof theday. Nothing, therefore, but disas- ters in the business of these incorporated companies, er ® demand for capital for business pur- poses, can disturb these investments, and swe aee xo other way than for the brokers to look on ard make the best of it. If they cannot get up a panic, their occupation will be very much restricted. The re- ‘vival of business, requiring an active movement of cap ital, would compel many holders of stocks to realize, but ‘we see n0 indications of such a happy event. The war an Europe, and the unsettled state of mercantile affairs in England end on the Continent, will prevent any impor- ‘ant revival of trade, ani we therefore look for a steady increate in the supply of money, and its investment in Stock securities, on both sides of the Atlantic, for the ‘want of any other use to wake of it. There is no other wutlet for it—no other way in which it can at present be Anvested to carn anything. We are watching with tre greatest interest and anxie- ty the progress of the reason. Thus fer the weather has deen everything that could be desired. Agriculture is at this moment thirty days in advance of what it was at the same time last yen’, and the breadth of land cultivated throughout the country is at least twenty per cent greater. All the spring crops have been sowed and planted in admirable order, and the progpect never was more flattering. The high prices which have ruled for agricultural pro- ducts, and the deficiency of last year, have given a great Stimulus to production, and with an average yield per acre, the aggregate product must exceed anythiag of the Kind ever known in this country. From present appear- ances, every bushel of grain and every pouad of beef * and pork we can spare, will ve wanted on the other side wf the Atlantic before the close of another year. We phall find markets for our products, at highly remuser- ative prices, in Great Britain and France, to au extent greater than that rea ized during the famine year, if the ‘war continues and is confired only to the Crimea; but if at extends, there is every reason to believe it will, we shall become the granary of Europe, and have to feed the ‘immense non-produsing population of those nations en- goged in the conflict. Al! we require to give us such » «eommanding position isa full crop. With that, we shal! de rich and powerful; without it, we shall be compelled ‘to. drag along another year of inactivity and contrac- tion. With it, we can control the movements of specie throughout the world; without it, we shall find it diffi. cult to keep what we have. Our worldly salvation de pends upon the harvests, which are not far off. The extension of railroads throughout the West which have opened sections of country producing mil ions of bushels of grain, heretofore unable to reach market, the great increase of labor in the agricultura zegions, from the inactivity of all other branches of indus- Ary, the favorable autumn for sowing wheat, and the fa- ‘vorable spring for sowing and planting spring crops, the high prices ruling for breadstuffs, and the abuadance of money offering for the extension of agricultural en- terprise, ali have an influence, which we hope to see Yealized in the barvestiog of such crops as have never before been known, even in this great couotry.
