INANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY maauwar. Feray, May 4—9'P. M. ‘The stock market was slightly better to-day. The ‘transactions were pretty eqtally divided betweea the differemt stocks. State stocks, railroad bonds, coal stocks and railroad stocks, were operated in to about the same extent. Indiana 5's improved 34 per cent; Cleveland and Toledo Railroad, 1; Michigan Central Rail- road, 44; Michigan Southern Railroad, 234: Michigan Southern Construction, 134. The consolidation of the Michigan Southern and Northern Indians Railroad stocks into one company has had a favorable effect on Prices, and given quite an impetus to operations in ths market. Other Western railroad stocks have also im* proved, but sales continue limited. Erie Central and Reading remain firm at yesterday's quotations. The coal stocks are not in much demand just now, and are mot very weil sustained. State stocks and railroad bonds appear to have reached their maximum. fhere {8 no speculation in any o' them. The absence of Euro- pean orders must have an uafavorable influence upon their market value. At the second board the market was influenced by the foreign news, and lower prices were accepted. The transactions were, however, quite limitei, showing a disposition to hold for better prices, under any circum- stances. Cumberland fell off + per cent; Erie Railroad, %; Harlem, %; Reading, *{; Michigan Southern Rail- road, 1, The class of brokers who are governed in their operations by the price of consols bad a fine opportunity to-day to make a demonstration; but we have not heard that they made any large transacticns, either for a rise or tall, Adechne of 134 per cent in consols is not re- Ported by every steamer, and they may not have enother such a chance fora long time. The firmest and most active stock this afternoon was Reading. We sheli have the report of last wosk’s coal business to-morrow. It will exceed that of avy previous week this year, and be nearly equal to that of any week last year. The heaviest month’s business last year was August, mo the total receipts amounted to $505,345 39, The monthof April this year will not vary much from that figure. ‘The transactions at the Assistant Treasurer’s office to- day were as follows :— Paid om Treasury account Received do. 18, 403 58 The Otis Manufactaring Company, Ware, Mass., has declared s semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent. The pre- vious two semi-annual dividends were 6 per cent. The earnings of the Michigen Central Ratlroad Company for the third week in April, 1855, amounted to $53,857, against $36,529 for the same time last year, showing an increase of $18,358, The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, Washington, on the 2d inst. were as follows:- For the redemption or op a ying Treasu: pied in beac the 30,073 00 For the Sere naacenest ing in the War Department... For the terior Department...... The steamship Atlantic, at this port from Liverpool, ‘brings nine days later intelligénce from Europe. The news is interesting in every particular, politically, ‘@nanclally and commercially. The most important item is the ‘negotiation of s new Joan by the English govera- ment for sixteen million pounds sterling. The announce- ment made by the Chancellor of the Exchequer of an enormous deficiency in the estimates for the current year, including the loan just negotiated, had ap unfa- vorable effect on consuls, and they closed at a decline- ‘The falling off was 1; to 15% percent from the previous steamer. Hopes were still entertained that the Vienna conference would be resumed.” There had been a more active demand for money in London, caused, it was supposed, by the temporary withdrawal of capital for deposit on the new loan. The returns of the Bank of England for the week ending the Mth April, compared ‘with the previous week, exhibits the following varia- tions_: tees Sry 720,640, . Decrease. £3, 288,253 4) 283, 796. Barings’ circular of the 20th of April says:— Ao Fog! lish loan of £16,000,000 sterling money, payabl> in ‘month agp Magpesha between this date and the end of the year, ‘been taken at a price equivalent to about 87 pee cont for 3 per cent consols, with the dividend [eek es ‘The scrip leaver off to- -day at 1% pre- jum, amd consols at the price of 89% a 89%. The cotton market was active at quotations previously -ourrent, with an upward tendency. From the manufactur- ing districts the accounts are pretty good. Less business had been transacted, but there was no yielding ia prices, spinners and manufacturers being generally well engaged for some time to come. Breadstuffs had not been in much demand. Prices for flour had declined, while Ia- dian corn had advanced. The supplies are not large, but holders are free sellers, there being no disposition to hold over. Indeed, there is no encouragement to do so, and without this it would be but folly to pursue such a course. The demand is more from the country trade than from local jobbers. The latter buy only as they are in want, thus be'ng able to take advantage of every fluctuation in prices. Brown and bleached sheetings and shirtings are in rather limited request, at previous figures. ‘here ise fair business being transacted in denims, drills and -duck, at old rates. Ginghams ard lawns are rather more sought after, but are without change in value. Osasburgs are unaltered. There is not a great deal doing in print- ing cloths or prints, but these are pretty firmly held, ‘Stripes and ticks are quiet and drooping. ‘Woollens have not varied much, Blankets are dull and heavy. There is some degree of firmness in cassimeres, which com- ‘mand pretty fair prices; but i@ cloths, flannels and jeans there is scarcely sufficient movement to make a market. Linseys are selling in a small way, and there is a little demand fer mouslin de \aines; but the most active por- tion of the season is at an end. Satinets and tweeds rule 85 previously reported. Foreign productions are lees active and less settled in prices, but the fluctuations are hardly worth noticiag. ‘There is not as much coming forward as usual at this time of the year, and the importers are not very san: guine in regard to the future. Bee. on hand are not very heavy, and are being closed out quickly, though not in a satisfactory manaor, as ml selling prices through the auction rooms ara se'dom of s remunerative nature, Thus, though the season may close without leaving our merchants in possession of any considerable supplies, its pecuniary results wil not be very agreeable in regard to profits. If losses are escaped, however, most parties will be content, aad we have but little reason to doubt that this will be the issue of the epring business. Meat run up toa high figure during the past week, Hereafter it must be classed among the luxuries of life, and be the food of the rich, and of the poor only on holi- days and festive oceasions. Cattle sold for from 12 to 14 cents per pound last week, in the cattle market, and the retail prices are consequently inordinately high, and the different varieties have ran up some two thzee and four centa in the pound, To in some sort make amends for this fish has become cheap. Shad is plentifal,,and can be had for prices varying from twenty to thirty cents. Flounders, bass, halibut, and cod have all fallen in price, ‘There is scarcely any poultry and game in market, nor will there be any until the Long Islaod anipe come in, which will probably occur in about week. We miss from’our list this week many well-known varieties, canvas backs, rabbits, &c. A plethoric purse is an es- sential requisite to those disposed to indulge in poultry of any description. Both butchers and poulterers who have had contracts with hotels and public institutions complain of the inordinate prices of sll kinis of flesh, and sey they are losing money. Eggs are cheapeniag., So rejoice, ye pudding eaters, Butter ditto, Spring vegetables are becoming quite plentiful. Radishes, carrots and beets blush crimson from out of bunches of green salad, spinach and leeks. Artichoke and asparagus, garlick and green peas, are to be seen in every direction. Potatoes still remain high; but if our information is correct they must come down before long. It appears that since the operation of the Reci- procity treaty, vast quantities of potatoes are sent from Nova Scotia to this port. In anticipation of good prices during the spring and summer they were kept back; but the demand for them fell off, poor people being driven to buy other food, and now they are coming in in great quantities. In Boston and Philadelphia they are selling for neventy-five cepts a bushel, and good judges predict they will be down to a dollar a barrel before long. Be this as it may, they will certainly be much cheaper.
