NEW YORK. HERALD, THURSDAY, MAY 3, 1855, At4 o'clock bis parexysme of excite- became eo great that Dr. Punderson was sent for. At 6 o'clock he appeared more calm and gave evilent that he coald live but a few hours. He was not as ‘8 at 3 and 4 o'clock, but gave unfavora- ble symptoms, whica coatinued until 73 o'clock. He was then lying upon the cot where be was placed Satur- day evening, and appesred to experience great difficulty in brvething, His groans when gas were extremely ‘ul to the ear, an suffering. From 73; o'clock up to nearly 8, he lay upon his right side, with ‘his face “turned. to th y ever moved his body, but was continually groaning née for breat! At ‘cick Doctors Punderson and Blakeslee were in attenance, and gave st as their opinion that he was dying, iriends gethered around his bed-side, plainly saw that he could live but a few moments. His ‘atber. wae at bis bed-side, and wus bending over tue dying form of his son at the time he expired. He was oveply affected Several of bis friends and relatives were by his bed-side and robbed audibly, and seemed in great distress. At 8 o'clock, he began to gasp for breath, amd seemed tm drep distress. At seven minutes #t 8 @’clock he uttered several groans while gasping for breath, and then commenced the struggle between life and death. ‘Ibe poor man moved but very little, but ecomed suffocating tor want of fresh air. The doors ard ome window ¢ opened, and fresb air admitted. He examined at this time by Dr Blakeslee, who that bis nervous 5° stem had ceased to perform its but bis heart beat yet aad he was at thiee minutes, he almost ceased to breathe, but at st drew his last breath at precisely ten minutes past 6 o'clock, No extraordinary straggle indeated great suffering, but he drew his tast breath with more case tbau could have been expected, consi- dering the pan be must nave been sulfering at the time. He was unconscious, but not delirious, during his last moments. Dr. Blatevlee put his hand upon the heart of young Wight, and when one of the family sake, +: Foes he stil breatne,”’ Dr. B. replied, ‘No, he in dead"? During this affecting scene the young and lovely wife of the dying man remained in another room. When he drew bis last breath, Dr Pundereon went into the room where Mrs Wight was sitting and sobbing violently, and announced the ceath of her Husband. She gave a scream of borror, which was aistinctly neerd in the next room, and ajso in the street, aod sbrieked and moaned piteous- ly. Dr. Punderron and cther friends tried to comfort her, but she seemed too deeply affected to heed their ad- monitions Our reporter left'thy death bed scene and went imme- @iately to the jail, where Clark ts confined, to bear to him sad pews cf the death of Mr. Wight, and ascer- tain his feelings upon tae sudject. Officer Knevals sad Alfred Daggett, Esq , entered the jail and went to his cell. Clark seemec quite careless ia his demeanor. Our reporter was present, and took gown the following con- versation which ensued:— k Mr, Daggett said—'Do you know me, Clark?” “You; it is Mr. Daggett,” said Clark, in a very sullen manner. Officer Knevais then advanced to his side and said— “Do you kzow me, Clark?” “Yee,” said Clark, in the same sullen manner. “This us a horribie affair,” said Mr. Knevals. Clark never ansvered, but seemed quite indifferent and rather annoyed by the presence of these gentlemen, “Have you heard since the affair,” said officer Kae- vals, “whetber Mr. Wight is siving or dead?”” “] bave beard that he is living,” said Clark, with an indignaat frown. ‘“] wish be wae alive, for your sake,’ seid Mr. Kno- vals, “but he is dead, and you are yet alive.” Clark made no reply, but looked’ doggedly indifferent for about two minutes, and then enid with an air of non- chalanoe:— ‘Weil, I suppose there is no help for it.” Clark bever betrayed apy emotion, but looked stern and indifferent when the news o! the death of his victim was communicated to him, and never shed a tear nor moved ‘8 musole in the least manner, and seemed to consider the death of Mr. Wight as a matter of very little impor- tance. ‘When officer Knevale and Mr. Daggett left bis cell, he spoke toMr Edward Bryan, the Assistant Jailor, who bad listened to the conversation, and said:— “Mr. Bryan, I want to see you privately for a few mo- mente’? Mr. B, gratified his request and went to his cell, and there had a long conversation with Clark. Clurk asked Mr. &. what the people thought of his case, to which Mr. B. replied that he dia_not know, as be had had very litte conversation with the people upon the subject. Clark sard he bad friends that would sympa. thize with him, but he supposed that many people woald think he ought to be ‘strung up” immediatly. A(ter some further copversation, Clark very coolly asked Mr, Bryan if he allowes smoking in the jail, saying toat he waa “very fond of t he weed,” aud hardly knew how to o without it. Mr. Bryan then toic him what the rules nd regulations of bis nsw made home were, which did ot méet bis entire approbation. ‘A post mortem exawination upon the body of the de- pies was held at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, yer- terday. Ta wemoving the brain from the exull, the ball fell into an earthen wash-bowl that was placed directly beneatn bis bead. It was cistinctly beard in the adjoining room, when it fell. It was picked up and fouad to be flattens onaiderably, baying very evidently been occasioned by ‘te contact with the cone of the skull. Taere was con- sideradie inflammaticn of the brain, and secretions of blood and other matter were found upon the surface where the ball entered. The ball doubtless passed entire- dy through the braiv. ‘The coroner's inquest was held upon the body of Mr. Wight, at 3 o’clovu yesterday afternoon, soon after tia post mortem examination was concluded. Mr. Jecob Gould waa sworn, who testified to the death of Mr. Wight, and many circum stances connected therewith. ss Dr. Punderson was examined, concerning the post mor- tem exemination, sud gave the resuit of that investiga- tion, stating that the ball dropped out while removing the brain. ‘After come farther questions by severe” jurors, the fol- lowing verdict was reuaered:— The jurors, being duly empannelled and eworn to in- ire of the cause and manner of the death of Richard . Wight, of saic town—having viewed the body o/ the deceaeed, and duly considered the evitence given us, on our oaths say that the said Richard W. Wight came to his ceath from a pistol wound in his head inflicted by the bands of Willard Clark, of said town, on the 28th day of April, 165. ting tae afternoon large numbers of citizens visited the house of Mr Bogart, to look at the corpse of the un- fortupate Wight, and the excitement throaghout the city to eee the remeins of the young man was intense, The family were compelled to keep an officer at the door, and an usher in attencance, to show the sfeorle the corpse, ‘and thus grati'y public curiosity. Many of the friends of the dectased ca’led during the day, and seemed deep- ly affectea wt the recital of the particulars concerning bisdeath. Mr. Wight was beloved and respected by all who knew him, ana has left a wide circle of friends to mourn his loss, From Saut St. Marie.—Business at Saginaw. {From the Lansing, Mich. Journal } East Sacivaw, April 21, 1855. ‘The Kansas Question. Easton, (Pa ) May 1, 1856, ‘The Reception of Gov. Reeler—The Great Free Sots Cele- vration—The Cake all Dough in Kansas. Well, we have had quite a free soil celebration over the return of Gov. Reeder, our worthy townsman, frum Kao- sas, Gov. Reeder kas not disappointed his friends, and his recital of the misdeeds of the ‘‘pro-slavery ans” from Missouri will go far to elect a free soil stor from Pennsylvania to Congress. ‘There is mothing lixe consistency, and Gov. Reeder has always been a copsistentman He was a Van Baren ¢e- mocrat in 1840, and has remained a Van Buren democrat ever since. Had he been consulted, he would, like Mr, Pierce, have been @ Van Buren man in 1848. It was important for the Buchanan faction in the State to re- concile such a man, and it wasdone, John W. Forney claims the honor of his appointment—our papers here boasted of the fact—though the friends of Judge Camp- bell are equally clamorous for that distiaction. The honcr must, no dopt, be divided between them; and the Profits of the office, coosisting chiefly ot lands bought of the balt-breeds, tor the purpose of being again sold to sturoy sevtiers, who were to till the groaad by their own free labor, waa to be exclusively shared by Forney, who claimed to be the man who, in a convivial mood, got Pierce to meke the sppommtment. Forney has no money to invest in slaves, and lands increace most ir price in the free States, Forney is deed a shrewo fellow, and has playad extremely diffi- cult part passing weil. He 1s playing a tolerably good bumbu; me between Pierce and Buchanan, and he does the same thing between the State rights men of the South and tbe free soilers of the North, He must . on terms with both, and so urust Pierce and Buchan: Besides, it is through Northern men that Forney ex- pects to make his money and to immerse his hands into the United States Treasury. Had Northera musa been Secretary of the Treasury, Forney would now have both pockets fuli of the stuff; but these high flung fellows of ‘the South know nothing, and don’t feel inclined to ob! a friend, Governor Reeder would have done better. would have acted like man, had thoce #fissouri pro- slavery ruffians not interfered and spoiled a good oar. ain. S We row understand what Forney and the Pennsylea nian meant when they both assured our good peopie throughout the State, that ‘no mater what prov.sions the Kapsas-Nebraska bill contained, slavery should never go into either of those Territories.”” From theory Pierce and forn+y meant to appeal to management and ractice to reconcile the North to the passage of that Bin. ‘The South were to have the promise, bat the North were to have the cake. Sbrewd fellow, that same stool Pigeon politician, Forney; but he did not make much money by this Reeder movement, after all. The “Mu- souri yro slavery ruffiaus” bave spoiled thegame. And yet, if Forney don’t make money either by appointments to office or some lucky end speculation in as, the days of bis prosperity are numbered. It takes money to keep house in Wasbington, entertain Pierce at ali hours ofthe day oF ight, dine members, and obtain a general reputation for being a ‘d——d clever fellow.’’ Some- body must. pay the piper, the grocer and the liquor dealer, A plague on those ‘Missouri pro slavery ruffians.’” RICTENHOUSE. Governor Reeder. From the Squatter (Kan ,) Sovereign. We do not hesitate to say, that, im the history of our country, no instance be found in which aa officer 80 unfit for any ef the duties of his office, 80 universally objectionable to the people interested, 80 publiciyand notoriously guilty of prostituting his official position to persona) pecuniary gain, to such infamous purposes, as A.H. Reeder, Governor of Kansas, has beem permitted ‘to retain his posit! or even to escape impeachment. From the day of his appointment to the preseat mo- ment, he bas either wholly failed to discharge the most pressing cuties, or has abused his po ition for the most corrupt purposes. For wonths after (his appointment he absented hi self from his post, though his immediate presence was demanded by the necessities of the ferritory. was devoted to electlonecring in Pennsylvania, or to tae study of Indian treaties, with a view to speculation in their lands. He came to our Territory not to be Governor,of itspeo- ple, but to speculate in Janda, to make money by his official position, and as agent of the Abolitionists to fasten the curse of abolition upon us.. Every act of his from the day of his arrival will establish beyond con- troversy that these were the sole ends and aims of his coming. He ina declared that the office of Governor could nat dave induced him to give up @ lucrative practice and the comforts of » home im Penpsyivania—that his motive was 10 make money, by the opportunities which would be afforded him for speculation. He had not time, after his arrival, to secure a room, before he became a large shareholder ia the town of Leavenworth, in considera- tion that it should be made the temporary seat of go- vernment. In this he was guilty of multiplied abuses of official trust. The Delaware Indians compisined that their ;reaty was violated by the location of the town upon their lands. As Governor of the Territory he should not have thrown the weight of his official position against them ‘By the act organizing the Territary, he was empower- ed to locate a permanent seat of government, and some $20,000 were placed in his hands to be expended in pud- lic buiidings at the place relectod. It was his bot to act fairly, and with a pure and disinterested consi \- tion of interest of the Territory in making euch seiecticn. On the contrary, for gain, he se'ls L and, for a speculation, promises to select a town in which he was a large sharebolder. That he has not complied with his agreement, adds but to his infamy. After having sola bis rght to locate the seat of gov- ernment, we next hear of him on # professed tour of ob- servation, made uncer pretence of ovtaining the neces- sary information to enacle him to orgeni go ment. This tour 1s hardly commenced before it 1s found to beatour of speculation. While absentirg hiaself from the Territory he has r the files o: old trea. ties at Washington, and believes he has discovered 'the foundation of a fortuve. As Governor, claiming to be second only to the ‘Great Father,”’ ke imposes upon the credulity of the poor balf-breeds, and purchases their land for a song. This spsculation is not sufficient. He continues his tour, and again, for a song, becomes large proprietor in the town of Pawnee. At once it is proclaimed that this is to be the seat of government. sition can be abused for the pro- fitable sale of stock, he is found ‘‘buying in.” His ‘tour’ completed, to give time to cealise on his investments, he defers the call of a Legislature, as that body would possess the power to locate the seat of gov- ernment, and might defeat his \ oonbr sggy In_ this, too he acted as agent of the abolitionists, Had the Le- gislatuze assembled last fall it was clear that the pro- slavery party would succeed. To defeat them, it was necessary to give further time to Thayer & Co. to their hirel'ngs; and not until the last moment—un indeed, as we are informed, he was ordered by the Pre dent—did he take ateps to call a legislature. ven then the time was extended, to enable the abolitionists to for- ward their last man. During all this time he was the head of a secret or- ganization for the purpose of making Kansas a den of Qbolitionists—act vely sorresponding with all parts of the country, urging the shipment of abolitionists—ad- vising them long in advance of the hour at which they would be needed—studiously, to the last moment, con- cealing from others the day of the election. He appoint- ed men to take the census, notoriously unfit, who would not scruple, and did not hesitate, to omit the names of those opposed to abolition, with a view to deprive pro- elavery districts of their proper representat He shamefully gerrymandered districts for the purpose of Gividing, and thus defeating the pro-slavery party.
