“ i Ld a8 LOY Wir NEW YORK HERALD WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 1865. adjourned, to continue at rome future day, to be spe- eited hereafter. The interdict against the admission of the public appears to have been removed, if we might judge from the number of spectators who were present. ‘The proceedings were unusually interesting; and al- though Alderman Briggs wan somewhat taken aback by the refusal of Mr. MeKellar, the Chiet’s clerk, to answer any questions which he considered objectionable, he (the Alderman) exbibited « fortitude that would have done credit to the old Stoic philosopher. The inquisitioa commenced at twenty-two minutes past three in the afterneon, aod terminated at three minutes to five. ‘The fret witness called wae Patrick McGrath, police- man of the Second ward, who, belog sworn, deposed as follows —I was appointed three times—twice by Aller- mee, re once by the former Commissioners; | applied te Alder or my frisose a Pe toh =f Py aarti ana, cr Peper| of my know have beeo vomit, T have sever brea in , except in the performance of my Gution; | Save never paid any mcaey in consideration of * Carmoty, policeman, was sworn next, and de- posed as follows —1 am @ mative of Ireland; I have been 6 about oime years, I will have been on the about five yeare next Jane; Iwas re-appointed ‘under the arw hoard of Commissioners; I was first ap- by Aldermen Dedge and Healey, ander Mayor yall, { bave mever been confined {nu any prison; I Sebained of saying where l came from; if you seat ba * icra. polsemen, testified as fol I ratty, as fo! the police two years on the 19th of May next; oy cv oe former Board of Comminsioners; up @ petition signed by 2 I made no reply m a native Jizavon ed up in | court I have got wy ‘papers 1 the Gisth werd station beure ut one time, for throwing snow Ll for about two bourse “ yee aay mo eL segsioment—at o rol "Patrice man of the ‘Second ward, boiag cwore, doyorel as foliews'—i have been on the’ police vinee the 26th of Deeomaber last; the Commissioners ap: pommted me | by « petives, of course; I procur- 4 my owe petition, paid ten cena, and weni and got signers to my father told me I vas bo-n in this coun tap, | have oo better way then that; my mother is dead; I Rover aeheo, because | thought i? as well to be born ia py other country as bee, | was bora at No $ Caroline street pear the Nerte 1) have been im pricon in thie State, | wos op Bla sk om the Fourth of jot of young mea got trams and got to aghtion with were brought im on the bth of Specal Sessions, acd tried before adge, ami got four months, and was par dene. by the Governor of tee State of New York; i was L mas boy at the ime ead mpenghety lable to © mictabe, Governor pardoned mo; me ange at the time I mite my, if Lhed bata decharge | woul! mot have here wass listie fellow s’arted with me be isiend, and be +wam across ‘oo, Senator Thomas ©. ARKETr. Tcespay, April 2i—6 P, M The stock market was steady todsy, With very large operations in the leading railroad stocks, pricts were firm, and cloved with a slight upward tendency. Erie and Reading are operated in more extensively than alj the others combined. Of the two there is a wider mar- gia in Reading, and it will prove the most profitable in- vestment, in the shortest time. The payment of a divi- dend by the Erie Company is a very doubtful matter, while the Reading Company will pay on the Ist of July— but little more than sixty days hence—a diviaend of ten per cent, six of whch will be in cash and four in stock, It w'll pay on the Ist of July, out of its not earnings, a semi annual dividend two per cent greater than the Central Compsny can pay in the whole year; ard yet the stock of the latter sells seven per cent higher than the former. At the first board, Nica- Tagua Transit advanced +; per cent; Hudson River 001 Tals ula aitdings on Railroad, 34; Clevelana and Toledo Railrond, 1: Cleveland and Toledo dividend bonds de:lined % per cent; Panama Railroad, %{. Nicaragua Transit appears to be moving up very gradualiy: without any speculative excitement. Cumberland Coal is gradually settling down, The company have iesued proposals for & loan of $500,000 on an issue ‘of first mortgage six per cent coupon bonds. To provide for the payment of these bonds, the company have agreed to pay into the hands of trustees fifty thousand dollars annually, as a sinking fund. The bonds are se- cured by a first mortgage on the company’s lands in Maryland. The object of this loan is to pay off, or put off, a debt of about the same amount. It has been re- peatedly stated, upon semi-oficial authority, that the ccmpany had a large surplus of earnings in its treasury, and that its net profits during the past year amounted to nearly four hundred thousand dollars. We should really like to see soms official report in relation to this matter. Independent of such a surplus, we understand the com_ pany took advantage of the recent inflation to sell its re- served stock, Ihe proceeds have doubtless been placed in the treasury, with the profits of the coal trade, and tho aggregate, whatever it is, will, without doubt, aa soon as the new loan is secured, be. appropriated to the payment of a dividend. We begin to have grave doubts relative to the existence of the reported profits of this company on its coal trade for the past year. After the adjournment of the board the following aales of stock were made at auction by Simeon Draper:— $160,000 U. 8, Mail Steamship Co. (Law’s) 20,000 Pacific Mail Steamship Co. (Aspin J. Thompaon’s regular weekly sales of toc will take place to-morrow, at balf-past 12 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. His list includes a large amount of State stocks. At the second board the market was a little depressed in prices, but the sales were quite large. Cumberland Co, fell off +f per cent; Canton Co., \; Erie Railroad, ‘4; Reading Railrond, 34; Cleveland and Toledo, ig; New York Central Railroad, 4. The transactions at the Assistant Treasurer's office to-day were as follows :— Paid on ania stm $240,542 73 Received + 222,404 23 Balance = + 2,816,868 73 Paid for Assay Office. 9,172 03 Paid on disbursing cl 18218 52 —Of the payments to day $52,500 was a California draft, and of the receipts $160,000 were from the West. ‘Tae Meshanics’ Banking Assosiation has declared a semi annual dividend of five per cent. By the arrival of the steamship George Law at thi: pert, from Aspinwail, we have seven days lates igtel- ‘igeace from San Francisco. The George Law brings $772,000 in gold as per manifgst, and government drafts for about $250,000 more, The distribution o the ship” ments shows that great caution is exercised by shippers, sod where drafts drawn onthe Sub-Treasury here can bo obtatued, (hey are preferred, as beirg safe beyond contia geney. We have no doubt this want of confidence in bonkers induces many pa amount of gold brought by every steamer is much larger than it appears, Financial and commercial affine in Ca ifornia were gradually improving. The re. somption of Page, Bacon & Co, oa the 201h of March, bad favorable effect. The deposits on the first ¢ay exceeded the Crafts about $109,000, and o: econd day $50,000, What effect the second suspension of Page & Recon, of St. Louis, may have upon the San Frangiagg bowse, remains to be sco, Mialog operstiqns tm California were progressing satisfactorily: Frequent heavy retm storms hed been experienced, and the miners were producing as largely as at any time in the history of the country. The yield this year will pro- badly exceed that of any previous one. ‘The receipts of the Chicego, Alton and St. Louis, tor merly the Chicago and Mississipp!
