Arrival of the Cahawba. ‘ONE DAY LATER FROM CUBA—THE RELEASE OF DB. PROK. ‘The United States mail steamship Cahawbe, R. W. Shu. feldt, commander, from New Orleans the 8th and Hava - ma the 9th ins:. arrived here yesterday morning. Havana was quiet and nothing of apparent interest » The city continues to be guarded by the “Volontanos,”’ the regular troops being neacly all ata- tioned along the coasts. Mr, ©, A, Peck, dentist, late of New York, was releas- ed from prison on the morning of the 11th, on the secu- rity of «friend that he would remain in Havana until hhis case was decided. Carlos Castillo has also been released from the Moro, and allowed ‘o remain at his re- idence until the sailing of the packet for Cadiz. Busineas was improving, with a tendency to advancein ine qualities of sugar. ‘The United States steamship Princeton, Capt. Eagle, ‘was stil at anchor in the harbor of Havana. ‘We are indebted to the purser of the Cahawbe for files f papers and iniell gence to the latest moment. OUR HAVANA CORRESPONDENCE. Havana, April 11, 1855, Case of Mr. Peck—No Causes as yet Assigned for his Ar- rest—Intervention and Discourteous Treatment of the United States Counsel—Arrest of Another American Citizen on Suspicion—His Discharge—Vexatious Pro- ceedings of the Ouban. Authorities im the Case of the American Vessel Thomas Church, dc., dc. I wrote to you yesterday, per Isabel, via Charleston; yet the Cabawba having arrived to-day twenty-four hours earlier than ehe was advertised to have done, and as she will depart in about four hours, I at once take wy seat at my writing table, in order to keep the innu- merable readers of the universal Hxnatp fully posted on parsing évents hero. ‘Ihe cuse of Mr. Peck, referred to yesterday, isone of extreme hardship, and a more gross cutrage has never been committed, even by ‘Cuban authorities,’ upon a citizen of the United States. A wet afternoon—you know what a tropical rain is— Kept me a prisoner within doors yesterday after dinner, and I was unable to fulfil my intention of having an in- terview with Mr. Peck. I have ascertained that his name is Chas. A, Peck, and ‘that be ina native of our own dear New York, He has been suddenly made a prisoner, without, as he is aware, having given just cause of offence to the government of ‘this island, or, indeed, toany member of it. Our Acting Consu!, Colonel Robertson, with praiseworthy zea!—ia- deed the old gentleman has apparently become a5 zealoas as the youngest of us, in alisuch matters—at onca wrote to the Captain General, to :now what were the charges preferrec against Mr. Peck. Yo this reasonable iaquiry no reply bas been received; but my “palace friend,”” wao visited me last evenimg, informed me that it threw Gen. Coneba quite into quandary—that an attempt was mace to 1rame a decent set of charges against Mr. Peck; but as no just cause positively existe for the arrest, Con- cha, sta:ting up from his chair, nearly upsetting his Pri- vate Secretary, exclaimed ‘Caramba! Charges? He wants charges—doeshe? Well, he shall have them soon enough, but not at present; it might give him time to colect evidence and prove them false—therefore heshall hhavenene. But send fora fiscal; let him goand interro- gate the scoundrel, and we shall see if hecaunot ick up causes enough for the arrest!’ But then Gen. Concha’s gr udence came to his good old! Not yet: we need not tro cischary ing the secrete r; “Dl give no anwer to this Commercial Agent of the Uat- ‘ted states and smoothing bis rufiled moustache, he concluded with, ‘Am I not Captain-General, and ought not that to suffice ”” You have probably heard of the following—another case of outrage—from another source, before taie; [know uot how itescaped me at the time of its occurrence. Some little time rince—it may have been rather more than a weeh—@ gentleman, a citizen of the United Ststes, who, 1 believe, bud returned from Myriel to St. Jago, was arrested snd brought prisoner before tae Captan. Gene. ra!, Mz. Darean pad purchased a borse, and was, ,to use Caiforcia tal, “prospecting.” He wae questioned ar to bis object im visiting the coantry, ami replied:— “Neth «rely to look about me ” “That's ver; picieus, the reply; and forthwith he was arrested and brought before Genersl Conch, who, it ia true, Cuveed him to be set at liberty; but is it not unbearable, shat citizens of the United States should thus be hurra sed and aunoyed by the stupid brutality of there Spaniards! Yet another cause of complaint:—The ship Thomas Church, of, if Imistake not, New York, arrived at Ma tanzas without a bill ot heal th—un oversight on the part of the Captain, fho was put into quarantine, and xept there for seven days, and put to «n exjense of $127, for bealth viaita, &c, "bs. aithough the port whence she sailed was not an infected one. che then left Matanzas, and came to thia port, her pre-ent master, — Lavanier, deq,, buving secored the requisite documents to sesure bin, 86 be thought, from further annoyance bere. How- ever, @u bis coming to anchor in this port, although the ship is in ballant, no less than seven Custom House offi- vers were placed on board of her; and up to yesterday tour of thee locfing fel.ows bave been kept on board every day, and seven evory night. Captain Lavender bas acted with much praence; be bas obtaiaed a char ter for bis ship, nas adérenved an official letter to the fsptein-General, and, if the annoyance is not removed, will protect againat itut the US Consulate, Bat { have forgotten that Captain L has refased to feed these Cus tom Route officers, and this iss terrible annoyance to them. Were I in his place, they should not even have a draught of water at the ship’s expense. BRUTUS. Havana, April 11, 1855, ration of Senor Castillo on Parole—Dr. Peck to be Liberated on Boit—Commercial Matters, de. The steamer Isabel will bring you last advices to yas- terday morning, which will be at hand in even time, I presume, with this, and to which I refer forall matters of interest. . Mr. Charles Castillo wad permitted to visit his resi- dence last evening, to remain on his parole of honor ua- til the packet is ready for Spain, which indulgence has been obtained through the influeace of bis brother, re cently arrived from New Orleans Mr, Charles Aagoatns Peck, who was brought hero from Puerto Principe, as you ‘have noticed, will be re lenred to-day, if he can tind any one willing ‘to take ths hara:4 to be tecurity for bis appearance when wanted for trial. The stock market was notat all active to-day, and prices were very unsettled, The leading speculating railroad stocks and State securities were all lower, while railroad bonéa and the irregular fancies ruled st higher prices. At the first Board Indiaua 5’s fell off 34 per cent; Missouri 6’s, 3{; Erie Railroad, 34; Reading Railroad, 34; Hudson River Railroad, 4. Harlem 1st bonds advanced 34 per cent; New York Central 7’s, 3; Chicago and Rock Island bonds, 34; Canton Company, 14; Nicaragua Transit, 1. There were no sales of illi- noise Central bonds this morning, and but small lets of any other class, But one small jot ot Cumberland Coal chapgec hands, and that was at the prices current at the clore cn Satarday. We understand that the business of this company for the year ending May 31, 1855, will yield @ profit of about $360,000, notwithstanding the Ciendvantages under which the coal operations labored jm the early part of last spring. The probability is tbat but for the miners’ strike at that time the profits of the company would have been much larger. We believe the company have concluded to appropriate the net earnings to the liquidation of its incebtedness, and to make a dividend in stock out of its stock in hand, There are in the treasury about three thousand shares of stock, which would give « dividend of about six per cent, pay- able in scrip, Nothing will be cone at present in the premises, and we bope that the deliberations of the di- rectors Will strengthen them in this policy. At the second board the market opened and closed weak, Lower prices ruled, but there was not much done 1 the leading fancies, Cumberland Coal fell off 14 per cent; Reading Railroad, 34; Erie Railroad, 1{; Cloveland and Toledo Railroad, The transactions at the Ass! dey, were as follows:— ant Treaturer's office to- Pad on Treasury secount, $891,588 76 Receivec 67,240 14 Balanco 2,921,249 72 Vaid for Antay office . | 9)805 97 faid for disbursirg checks. - 79,116 80 The warrants entered at the Treasury Department Washingtov, on the 19th inst., were:— For the re-+mption of stock. . This will drew a large sum from the banks, tne extent of which will be seen in the next weekly report. ‘Mr. A. H. Decrease in ctreulation, Decrease in depostts ‘The frat time for several weeks or months every de- Fartment shows a decrease, The line of discounts and the circulation show the greatest falling off. The de- crease in specie and deposits does not amount to much, but it is only important on account of the reduced movement in the departments. The above returns are highly satisfactory, but it is only the begining. Next week must show « greater contraction in discounts, ‘The specie department must for some time show a steady decrease, and that must affect all others. This wilt be felt in the money market, and we should cot be surprised to see a moderate stringency in the street. There is every probability of a steady drain of specie from our bonks for shipment to Europe, and we cannot depend upon California for supplies until financial affairs in that section become more settled. The banks must therefore look to the stock in hand, and adopt such a couree of action as will best preserve it. Stock Exch Exchange.
