2 FINANCIAL AND COMMEF.GIAL. —_— MONEY MASKE TY, . Taunsvat, AP ri) 12~6 P. M. ‘The stock market opened heavy tt ig morning, #0 far as prices were concerned. There “sas considerable sc- tivity in operations, and the disp’ssition to vell at the decline was pretty genera! All ‘the leading speculative railread stocks fell off more thaa the smaller fancies. Erie bondr, 1875, declined ¥, per cent; Cumberland Coal, 3; Panawa Railroad, 124, Stonington Ragroad, 4; Erie Railroad, 1; Harlem, 34; Reading Railroad, 134; Hudson River, 5; Michigan Central Railroad, {. There was not ‘a single exception. in the entire list; not the first stock improved. Most, of the transactions at the first board were for cash, which looks as though holders who beught at lower prices, were realising. This we have anticipated. It is the natural result of@ rapid rise, and wuch fluctuations are necessary to keep the market ac- tive. The market invariably falls when those who have been heavy purchasers turn sellers; but the downward course is ultimately arrested by old operators becoming buyers again. Reading Railroad bas been from time to time affected during the present speculative movement by such changes in the position of operators. Buyers at 80 would naturally sell at 85, and when prices dropped to #2 or 83, again buy and sell at 86 0°87. In this way they carry the market up, and keep it moving until prices have reached their maximum. A stock possessing so much merit as Reading can éasily be worked up in this manner, without holders being in danger of a collapse, but it would not be safe to operate in a worthless fancy in the same way. Reading will more than pay its interest account a8 it goes along. A purchaser of this stock has ne interest. rapning against him to reduce his differ- enees, if his contract can be carried beyond dividend . day. Erie differs from Reading in this particular. The former beings non-dividend paying stock, it is » dead weight in the hands of holders, and at its present mar- ket value, costs a great deal to carry. So with Cumber- Jand, Harlem, Hudson River. Raitroad bonds and State stocks, being productive securities, are operated in on time, buyers’ option, more favorably than fancy stocks. ‘They do not vary so much under the influence of specu- lation, but are in less danger of sudden flastuations, and eafer to hold im the event of much depreciation. After the adjournment of the board the following wales of bonds and stocks were made at auction, by A. = Nicolay:— 7,000 Tennessee 6’s, 1892. % 600 Mist ouri ¢’s, Lanier $,000 Virginia coupon 1,000 New Orleans elt cits * 3000 NewYork and *, 1,000 Cincinnati and Chicago R. Erie Railroad declined 3 per eent; Reading Railroad, 4; Cleveland and Toledo Rail- read, 3; New York Central Railroad, 3; Harlem, %. Both Reading and Erie slightly improved towards the close. ‘The steamship Washiogton, at this port from South- ampton, brings four days later intelligence from all parte of Europe. The political accounts are interesting and important. Some progress had been made in the negotiations for peace, and the Western Powers had meocified their demands materially, but the prospect of a satisfactory result was by no means favorable. The latest acceunts from Vienna do not give much eacou- ragement to the friends of peace. The most important point was under consideration at the latest date. The. financia) and commercial accounts are about the same as those received by.the previous steamer, Consols had advanced s fraction. By the Baltic, the quotation was 92%. By this steamer they range from 92% to 93 per eeut. Cotton continues firm at prices previously re- ported, with an active market. Breadstuffe remain without alteration. There was not much activity at Mark Lane. S. Draper's regular semi-weekly tale of bonds and tock» will take place to-morrow, (Friday,) at half-past 2 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. ‘The transactions at the Assistant Treasurer's office to- Cay, were as folows:— Paid on waoner + account. .. — eee ay, tor Assay cae: Paid on disbursing checks ‘The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, ‘Washington, on the 10th inst., were:— For Treasury debts. $4,774 20 Por tbe Givtoms. 30,889 29 pe covering into the Treasury from Customs.. 44,619 18 bing ye Treasury from miscel. sources.. 44,619 05 the War Department. 23900 98 Fer the Navy De it. 35,000 00 For the Interior Department . 8,768 61 For repsying in the Interior Department...... 3,580 89 in the Senate of this State yesterday, Mr. Field in- troduced the following bill in relation to stockjobbing:— fection 1.
