This corps has heretofore given its soirées in the dining room of the Astor House, at ten dollars a ticket— srather exclusive price. The present affair was intend- ed te be more democratic and more profitable, Both these conditions were fulfilled tos certain extent. Three thousand six hundred tickets were issued at two dol- lars each, and it is stated that one member of the corps sold one thousand. Our reporters have further been informed that about twenty-five hundred tickets were sold, which would make the gross reseipta ve thousand dollars. The expenses amounted to about fifteen hun- dred dollars, which would leave s balance of over three thousand for the monumental fund of the company, to which fund the proceeds are to be applied. ‘The ball was emphatically # crushing afiair. The Academy wus arranged for the occation in precisely the ‘ame styte as for tne Firemen’s Ball, the parquette ‘being floored over. There were mo decorations. The muslo—a quadrille and a military band, about one hun- red pieces—was furnished by the brothers Dodworth. The military musicians were in uniform, and were con- Cucted by agentieman who marked the time for them with baion. It seemed odd. From 11 till 1 o’clock the floor wae crowded, and there were, probably, four thousand men, women and children, indulging in the emusements of the ‘gay and festive scene.’’ These amusements consisted in part of dancing in very close quarters, of being jostled and elbowed by everybody, or of being seized by some young man with a red ribbon, who felt the dignity of his position as a member of the committee, and prevented one from going to the only place that cne desired to go just at that moment. Much of the confusion and discomfort at this ball might bave been prevented by care and attention on the part of the committee. The assembly was a ‘popular’ one, and included delegates from all stratas of eociety. The military men came out strong—the uniforms of many city regiments appeared on the floor—end half a dozen tigers (tame) from Boston, attracted a great deal of attention. Lieut. ‘W. W. Clapp, of the Boston Light Infantry, represented the officers of the famous Boston regiment. The arrangements for supper were very bad. It was given in the saloon in the basement, (where the Oper artists lately held their indignation meeting ) It was @iffieult to get a place at a tadle, and still more difficult to get anything to eat after that, At about 2 0’clock the monotony of the supper business was diversified by a sharp skirmish in a saloon adjacent to the supper room. Matters were so mixed up that it was difficult to gain the porticulars of this spirited little affair ; but it appears that a difference of opinion about a pecuniary matter bad arisea between a specimen of Young America and an excitable person whose ‘‘ parents were not born on the soil’’—a German or Frenchman, Young America aseaulted his foreign opponent, and there wana ‘‘rally.’’ ‘First blood” for Young America, who was last seen going out of the Irving place door, under the affectionate care of a policeman, ‘The affair waa very short, and its sudden termination disgusted one young gentleman, who evidently took a warm interest in {be fleld sports of New York, as he said “it was the only ‘Dit of fun in the whole ball’? The last two hours of the ball were very stormy in the lobbies and saloons. Order and decorum, however, reigned on the floor, as far,as we saw. At three o’clock there were only a few desperate dancors remaining—satiety bad succeeded pleasure and excitement—soon after the last polka was potked—the last lady was shawled —the last carriage rolled away with its tired burcen—and the Light Guard ball was over. it because it answered the purpose of the corps and netted a large sum of money fora worthy ob- ject; but thera were a great many disagreeable matters connected withit, Weare of opinion that no liquors should be sold at a bar within the building where « pub” lic ball is held, It is generaily of the worst sort, and pearly all the rows, fights, and so forth, which have dis- graced the public balls of this city, to such a degree that thousands of ladies refuse to attend them, may be traced directly to this cause. ‘The German Opera. “Der Freiechiitz” was givem last night tos very full house. The opera was no’ well put upon the stage, and the performance, as a whole, was not above mediocrity, but the audience was in the best of humors, aud forgave little errors in cemsideration of the fact that they were hearing the ch<f d'oewvre of Carl Von Weber, rendered inthe master's language. Tho Agathe of the night, Miss C. Lehmann, bas a full, frevb, high soprano voice, and rendered her music corzectly and expressively, If we say, in addition to thir, that M’me Siedenberg played Anncben with a great ceal of vivacity, and sung her opening air in a piquant and sprightly manner, aad that the orchestra was good and correct, as far ay it went, the merits of the performance will be summed up. The performance , however, seemed highly satisfac- tory to theaudience, which was composed of the Vilite of German nociety in New York, and large delogations from the ‘reat of mankind.”’ The German opera, thus far, at Niblo’s, bas been successfal, and it would be more ro, if the troupe was strengthened by the engage ment of artists of ability. Flotow’s ‘Martha’ will be given on Thursday.
