FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Faivay, March 23—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was wonderfully sustained to- day, considering the intense anxiety existing rele- tive tothe arrivel of the steamship Atlantic. Bust- ness is very mach unsettled, and very little dispos'- tion is exhibited to operate in stocks, either for an improvement or decline. The tendency, however, amidst the suspense, was upwards, and in some of the leading fancies a moderate advance was realized. At the first board New York Central bonds went up 2 per cent; Cumberland Coal, 3; Erie Railroad, 4; Hudson River Railroad, 1; Michigan Central Railroad, 3; Michigan Southern Railroad, 4. Cleve. land and Toledo declined 13 per cent; Missouri 6's, 4. Nicaragua Transit was very firm, with more activity; Reading Railroad remains without change; it has been firmly established at about its present pointe. It will not go at any time more thana fraction or so below current rates, the margin for variations being upwards. Railroad bonds are again becoming active. Ilino'e and Eries were in better demand this morning. Erie Railroad stock moves up and down, ina small way, with great facility. There is a party of operators in the street talking about 60 per cent before the ist of July, upon the strength of a scrip dividend in October, to the extent of the sinking fund. The dividend at that time and to that extent is not at all im- possible, but we are in considerable doubt about the sixty per cent in market value by the lst of July. Bpeculation may put the stock at that point, but it can have no permanency. State stocks were freely Offered to-day, and in the face of the large supply in the market prices were well sustained. Missouri and Virginia 6’s have been dai y offered in large lots for several weeks, and there appears to be no end to the supply. Many of the pur-hases are for foreign account, and the bonds are gradually going out of the country for permanent investment. Illi- nois Internal Improvement stock of 1847 has been in demand within the past day or two, and prices tule well up. After the adjournment of the board, the following ales of bonds and stocks were made at auction by Bimeon Draper :— $7,000 N. ¥. Central R. R. 7’s........Int. ee ts 23000 Incomes. At the second board the market was not active or buoyant. Cumberland Coal fell off { per cent; Harlem, }; Reading Railroad, 3; New York Central 7’s,4. Galena and Chicago Railroad advanced 4 per cent; New York Central Railroad, }; Hudson River Railroad,}. The continued absence of the steamer is gradually depressing the market, and re- @ucing transactions. Messrs. W. & J. O'Brien, No. 33 Wall atreet, are the agents for redeeming the notes of the Bank of Lake Mahopac of Putnam county, N, Y., in place of the Bank of North America. Messrs. O’Brien gnarantee these bills so long as they act as agents, which is independent of the security in the hands of the Bank Department. It is therefore a aafe currency for the people to carry in their pockets, and to use in their domestic expenditures. The Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad Com pany are in the market for proposals to the balance of their mortgege bonds, amountisg to $170,000 This lot completes the entire issue of $350,000, vered by mortgage on a road 93 miles in length. fully equipped, and costing $2,700,000. The net earnings of the Montreal road are about $150,000 per annum, and the interest required for the mort- gage is but $55,000. The proceeds of these bonds will be applied to the payment of the floating deb’ of the road, so that no new debt is contemplated in this loan, and the company will stand in a stronger financial position after disposal of the bonds. Sales of the 7 per cent bonds have been made recently at 90, and the 6 per cents at 85.
