MONEY MARKET. Tnourspay, March 22—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was a little heavy at the opeu- ing this morning. With considerable reduction ia extent of transact‘ors, there was in some of the fan clea @ decline in prices. At the first board Virginia 6's fell off { per cent; Missouri 6's, 4; Erie bonds, 1875, 4; Winois Central bonds, 3; New York Cen- tral 7’s, 4; Pennsylvania Coaly 4; Cumberland Coal, 4; New York Central Railroad, 1; Cleveland and Toledo Railroad, 3; Harlem, j; Reading Railroad, 4; Hudson River Railroad, 17. Galena and Chicago Railroad advanced 1 per cent; New York Central bonds, 4. The market is more unsettled than it ‘would otherwise be, on account of the anxiety of the public mind relative tothe odmplexion of our Next sdvices from Europe. It does not matter, so much what the character of the expected news is. The suspense is working more injury than the re- ality. So far as cur most important local interests are concerned, it is not of so much consequence whether the reported death of the Czar is true or Lot. We want the fact, whatever it is; and those who sell stocks for a fall, upon the supposition that Nicholas is living, will make a mistake, for his death would be mo:e likely to put prices down than ‘up on this side of the Atlantic. fhe advance in stocks bas not been entirely upon the fact of his desth. {Previous to the arrival of admnces to that effect, the stock market had been quite buoyant for some time, and the cazses producing that expansion were entirely local. The upward movement commenced in the midst of the gloomiest war period of the season, and it is our impression that the reseipt of intelligence thatthe Czar is alive and vigorously prosecuting the war, will be more likely to put prices for stocks up than down. The war has now no terrors for us, under its mos} adverse circum- stahces, but on the contrary is calculated to be of advantage in a good many ways. It served to con- tract and restrict commercial transactions, andthat was just what we wanted to recover strength and tone in our financial systems. It acts now as & whole- some check upon mercantile operations, and pre. vents the existing easy money market from leading to more over-importation and more overtrading But forthe fears and apprehensions entertained relative to the European war, there would have been, before this, all sorta of enterprises and pro- jects presented for the employment of capital, and we should have been again in the same line of ex- travagance that led to so much disaster six months since. The war has been our safeguard. It is the fear of eomething they know not of, which has kept the community in check, and saved us from arelapee. Inthis view of the question, any event likely to restore peace to Europe and let loose upon ‘us again all the elements of speculstion, cannot be looked upon in s favorable light, and the death of the Czaz would therefore, under these circum. atances, be deplored. After the adjournment of the board to-day, the following sales were made at auction by A. The ateamship Atlantic, from Liverpool, must be nesr at hand with seven days later intelligence, and the anxiety for her ar- rival is so intense that nothing of importance will be done im any of our marketa until the suspense is removed. The steamer is now in her thirteenth day, and cannot be long delayed. The traneactions at the Assistant Treasurer's office te-day, were as follows:— Paid on Treasury account. The annual election for officers of the Gardiner Gold Mining Company was had a few days since, when the following gentlemen were elected for the ensuing year:—Charles Ely, A. P. Halsey, Charles Tracy, P. G. Gardiner, J. W. Candler and 8. H. Mix. At a subsequent meeting of trustees, Charles Ely was elected President; Geo, C, Ripley, Treasurer, and Richard Youe, Secretary.
