614 NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, MARCH 19, 1855. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Sunpay, March 18—6 P. M. The past week has been an active and a bueyan’ ‘eae in the stock market. Prices geverally have a4- vanced, and a much stronger speculative feeliag nas appeared than we have before noticed. State stocks, railroad bonds, and some favorite railroad shares, have been in demand aj rapidly improving prices- The purchases for investment have been large, and tue fature presents many favorable features, Money + abundant and cheap; the banks easy in tx «ifferent departments, First rate basicess paper, sach as the banks want, is s:arce, owing to tne seat contraction of business. The limited amount of business doing in the different branches must sake this s:arcity permanent, and the a >cumulatioa of money cen find no immediate outlet exsopt through stock securitiss. This, undoubvedly, 1s the first cause of the enhancement of Stats stocks and railroad bonds; and wil!, witnout doubt, lead ult mately to considerable speca!ation in the stock mar- ket generally. Outsiders are looking closely into the character and condition of any stock they toach, and ‘will nct teke hold of anything not posssssing real merit. So long as they exercise tois caution, so long will they avoid those dangera which too often beset buyers. There are enough good securities on the market, with a good margin for an improve- ment, ard the attention of eps:ulators should bs confined to that class of stocks, We do notsee anything in the future calculated to prevent our having am easy money market. A very active revival of business might in a short time create a demand for capital, and our accumulations would become distributed ; but we do not see the slightest indica: ticns of a revival of business, but, on the contrary, evidences of a very moderate movement. Our im- portations have not been smaller, for the season, for Many years, and our indebtedness on the other side is at present a matter of no consequence. A good demand exists in England and on the Continent for our public securities, and the exportation of specie cannot, under any circumstances, reach an amount of any importance. Our gold receipta from Cali- fornia remain witbin oor own limits, and add largely to our metallic currency. Our banks are in a strong position, better fortified with specie than ever before, and on all sides of us are evidences of grow- ing prosperity. We are just entering upon anew growing season, when our farmers will provide for the cultivation of an unusual extent of ground. This, we trust, will Jead to an abundant harvest, and the remuneration of the producing classes throughout the country. A good crop next fall would set us all up again, and remove all vestiges of recent disas- ters. It has been many years since the United States occupied in the financial and commercial world euch a proud and independent position, and if we are disposed to conduct our foreign trade upon proper principles, we can maintain ourselves as we nowstand. The European war tested our resources to their utmost, and we have now nothing to fear from the continuation of hostilities in the Crimea, or in any other part of Europe. Albert H. Nicolay’s regulsr semi-weekly auction sales of stocks and bonds qiil take p!ace on Mon- day, the 19th instant, at 12} o’closk, at the Mer- ohant’s Exchange. The sale of For: Wayne and Bouthern Railroad bonds will take place on the 22d instant, not on the 24th, as stated yesterday. The Treasurer of the State of North Carolina will receive proposals at his cffice in Raleigh, until the 14th of April next, for the purchase ot one million of bonds, redeemable in thirty years. These bonds are issued by the State of North Carolina for the construction of the North Carolina Railroad; andia addition to the faith of the Btate, all the stock held by the State in said road, and the dividends arising from eaid stock are pledged for their redemption, ‘They will bear date the lst day of April, 1855, and will have coupons attached for the interest at six per cent. per annum, payable the firet days of April and October in each year. Both interest and prin- cipal will be payable at the Bank of the Republic, in the city of New York, unless where the purchaser preters to bave them payable at the Treasury of North Carolina. They will be issued in sums of one thousand dollars each. These bonds are by ex- press enactment exempted from taxation for any purpose. The State Treasurer of Michigan has advartised that the bills of the Government Stock Bank at Aun Arbor mast be sent in by the 28th of April next, and that a final dividend from the securities in his hands will be made on the 10th May next. * he annexed statement exhibits the quantity and value of cértaic articles other than foreign dry goods imported inté this port during the week ending Friday, March 16, 1855:— CommERcr bes Port or New York—Werkty Imports, Value, Pkgs. ats $13,345 India rubber. tf 309 Musical ins’ts Surgical do..
