MONEY MARKET, Wapnespay, March 14—6 P, UM. ‘The stcck market opened and closed heavy to day. The only really agtive stock on the list was Reading, and that receded a little from the opening, not: withstanding the large sales. Panama railroad was sold to some extent to-day, at the decline noticed yesterday. There appears to be considerable anx fety jto realize on this stock. The highest point touched a few weeks since was twelve and fourteen per cent premium. It now sells at a fraction above pat,and ten shares are sold now where there was one then. The excitement raised on the opaning of the road from ocean to ocean has subsided, and the views of holders have evidently changed. Railroad bonds are not so active today, bu} we have no change of consequence to report in prices. State stocks continue firm and in demand, but sellers were notso plenty to-day, and the supply on the market eppears to be more, limited. Erie, Harlem, Central, Hudson River Railroad and the western railroads, are only operated in to a small extent, and exhibit no indications of an improvement. Holders canaot get up any speculative excitement, and but for the ease with which almost any fancy stock can be bypothecated, they would have been forced on the market long before this. This position is at the best a precarious one, and with the margin .or a decline which exists inthem all, the risk of carry- ing is too great to be justified by any prospective profits. The danger of loss is too great, and the Probability of a rise too remote, to induce new operators to touch such stocks in the present state of the market. The political advices by this ar- rival are important and interesting. The Palmerston miniatry has broken to pieces and been patched up again, to last, perhaps, as long aa the firat forma- tion. While the British ministry is undergoing these changes, the war in the Crimea is nearly at a stand still. No progress has been made in the siege of Sebastopol, but great preparations were going on in England for the opening of the spring campaign. The effect of these political and hostile operations upon commercial affairs was anything bat favorable, Trade was inactive, and the failure of Gibson, Ord &Co., of Manchester, was reported. The amount involved in the failure was about £30,000. Qaota- tions for cotton and corn had not experienced any material alteration, but the markets were dull.
