4 NO. 7L FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ~ MONEY MaRKET. Mowpay, March 12—6 P. M. ‘Blocks were in better demand to-day at better State stocks were particularly active, and a improvement was realized. At the first \poard Indiana 5’s advanced { per cent; Missouri _ 8s, 4; Virginia 6's, {; Louisiana 6's, 4; North Caro- lina 6's, j; linois Central Bonds, 4; Nicaragua ‘Transit, {; Reading Railroad, }. Panama Railroad Geclined 2 percent. The demand for State stocks is principally for banking purposes. Indisna 5's 8 few weeks since were selling at 75 per cent; now- they are selling at 88—an advance of 13 per cent. * ~ Missouri and Virginia 6's wera at that time very low, and they now are not far below par, with ago0d prospect of coon reaching that point. Lllinois Cen- tral bonds are steadily advancing, with a moderate demand. Fries of ali claves have been much @egiected lately, and prices are barely sus tained. We do not look for much change In Cumberland until the dividend ques- tion is disposed of. The quicker it is done the better. Krie Railroad hangs heary at a fraction Bbove 46 percent. It probably will not at presen’ go much above that point. R-ading Railroad is Moving steadily upward, ard oiay not stop short > par. In less than six monthe it wili be, withoa , doubt, the highest railroad stock on the list. The rates now charged by the Reading Railroad Compa ‘py for the transportation of con) are similar to those ‘which, in former years, have not been made until the lst of July. The income of the company, there- fore, from its coal business, from the 1st of March to the let of July, this year, will be about three huo- dred thousand dollars greater than in the same time last year, on the same quantity of coal transported. Any increase in the coal business will, at the cur- rent rates, add largely to the company’s reve- nue, The extra charge for transportation com: menced on Monday, the Sth of March, and the returas for the wock endiag Thursday, tie Oth, show the receipt at tidewater of 40,300 “tons of coal, against 28,300 for the correspond- ing week last year. This shows how well the new tariffof charges works. The capacity of the road is almost unlimited. The Miners’ Journal says that @uring the past year the machine shops of the Read- ‘ing company turned oat no less than forty-two locomotive engines, amounting to an aggregate of 1,602 horse power. This number, added to that pre- ‘viously existing, makes a total of 280 engines for transporting coal alone, with an aggregate power equal to 9,649 horses. The projectors of this Toad based its construction upon a business of 300,000 tons per annum; bat placing the actual bu- Biness of the regien at 3,000,000 tons, it is demon- fitrated that the increase in cost has not kept pace with the rapid increase in business. - After the adjournment of the board, the following sales of bonds were made at auction by Simeon Dra- ‘per:— $25,000 North Carolina Six «+Tnt, added 9834 . 95M 95,000 Virginia Sixes do. 20,000 3i.-sourl Sixes do, 93% 15000 do. do. do. 93% 6,000 Tenncasee Sixes do. 94 do. do, 951g $8,000 Pennsylvania Fives... do, 92 . We are pleased td see that the expansion in discounts has been arrested, and that acontraction has com- menced, mederate itia true, but it is a contractioa, and that ia so much gained. We have noticed for some weeks the expansion in logne, with a great deal Of distrust, and Gecrease, no matte: LW trifling, is more satisfactory. The banks have not been expanding in the general business of the country, but upon the stock operations of Wal street—upon the inflation in market value of the leading fancies. The managers of our banking in- stitutions are deeply interested in stocks, and are now playing the same game we have #o trequently alluded to, in their operations. At the proper time for the advancement of their private interes'a we shal have 4 contraction and another stringent | money market. The increase in specie, in the face of the large shipment last week, ia somewhat unex- pected. We have # steamer near at hand, with about one million more, which will increase the aggregate. It will be some time betore we shall have another large shipment from this port. The Canard steamer from Boston, on Wednesday, will take out abcut three quarters of a million of dollars.
