Wupnespay, March 7—6 P. M. At the opening this morning the stock market was heavy, so far as prices were concerned. The operations were larger than usual, and a larger por- tion for cash. At the first board Illinois Central Bonds declined 4 per cont; N‘caragua Transit, 1; Cumberland Coal, 1; New York Central Railroad, 4; Erie Railroad, 4; Harlem, }; Reading Railread, }; Iinois Central Railroad, }. U.S. Sixes, 1867, ad- vanced 3 per cent; Indiana Fives, }; Louisiana Sixes, 1; Erie Bonds, 1875, }. State stocks and railroad bonds were in very active demand. The sales of Indiana Fives amounted to $19,500; of Virginia Sixer, $60,000; of Erie Bonda, 1875, $66,000; Iltinois Central Bonds, $46,000. Of the railroad stocks, Rencirg was in the greatest demand. I opened at a decline of } per cent trom the closing prives of yesterday, but improved afterwards, and left off at a decline of only 4 per cent. This etosk may not improve so rapidly as its position aud productiveness would justify, but it cannot recede much from current rates, Nicaragua Transit was not so firm this morning. It fell off after the opening & fraction. Erie, Har- Jem and Hudson River Railroad were weak and not stallactive. The large shipment of specie to day by the steomship Baltic was probably the principal cause of the depreciation; but the market is so variable, and moves up and down with eo much facility, that we should not be much surprised to see afull recovery to-morrow oi all that has been lost to-day. So far as the exportation of specie is cor. cerned, we see in it no cause for alarm among holders of fancy stocks. The bauks are so strongly fertified in that department, that it will be very difficult to reduce the aggregate below an average amount. The receipts from Culifornia average sbout a million of dollars per week, and the exgorts have not, when at the higtest points, averaged wore than that sum per week; so that, ia the event of am a:tive shipment again commencing, we have 8 cupply sufficiently large to guard against all con tingencies. We bave no fears that the banks will be xeduced much below the present standard. At the second board there was no change of con- sequence in quotations. The market appeared to be stead'er, and no disposition was exhibited to force sales. Cumberland Coal advanced } per cent; Delaware and Hudson, 1; Indiana 5’s, 3. The Jefferson Insurance Company have declarad The Civil and Diplomatic bill provides taat here after the New York Assay Office shall be allowed to refine gold deposited in it, sending only the ballion requiring coinage to the Mint in Philadelphia. ‘We eee by the Boston papers that in consequence of vome of the railroads out of that city haviog raised the price of season tickets to commuters, considereble excitement existed among that mach abused claes of citizers, and that messares were about being adopted to place lines of omuibuses on the different routes. These rail‘oad commuters are @ source of great trouble to railroad companies. They are continually grumbling about the high rates required for transportation, and if the roads should carry them for nothing they would find fault with the time table, or something else. These comma- ters are a class who fly from the city to escape texation and high rents, and, not satisfied with the facilities farnished for getting to and from their residences, sre continually remonstrating against the expense inflicted upon them by the railroad companies, acd threaten if the rates are raived, or even sustained, to put on lines of omui- buses. There people probably pay on an averaze about one quarter of a cent @ mile 1or transporti- tion, while all the railroads of Massachusetts do not average a net income of three per cent on their cost. It ia full time for railroad companies to 100k out for themselves. If they cannot get travel that psys better than cnc-quarter of a cent per mile they better not have any. Railroads have beea run long enough for the public, aad it is time to look to the interests of stockholders. They have the power in their own hands, snd if they do not use it it istheir own fault. Property in the vicinity of Boston hss been increxsed in value one hundred feld by the mumerous railroads ponetrating every section, notwithstanding which we find those wo have in this way been most benefited loudest in their complaints inst any increase in fares. Iodigaa- tion mectings have been held in this city aad vicinity by commuters, and the managers of our railroads denounced in the strongest terms fur pre- suming to put up fares. Railroads are poor property enovgh at the best, and those who are directiy benefited 20 much by them can certainly afford to psy remurerating rates for transpo-tation.
