466 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. ‘Wapnespay, Feb. 28—6 P. M. market appears to be in ® very un- Pinar gst condttion. Qaotations fall off one @ey snd recover the next. Yesterday, at the first board, prices were lower than on the day previous, This morving an advance was realized throughout ‘the list. These fluctuations are all among the brokers, and it matters little how violent they may be. Outeiders cannot be caught so easily. At the first board to-day I\linois Central Bonds advanced 4 per cen’; Canton Co., 3; Cumberland Co., 4; Erie Railroad, 4; Harlem, 1; Reading Railroad, }; Chica go and Rock Islasd, }. Dlinois Central Bonds con- tinue in ective demand, ard closed one-half per cent better than the opening. Erie Bonds, 1875, remain about the eeme. Fancy stocks are merely floating at present prices from one broker’s hands to an- ether, and spy advance which may be reported to- day may be lost tomorrow. Holders are able to keep them up by the great abundance of money but this is by no mears a profitable game to play for ‘any length of tine, and cannot continue uniess new “players enter the arexs. Sellers are making interes all the time, snd occasionally bag one or two pe ent on differences. The fear expressed by some of our cotemporarics relative to the reduction in re venue from the reduction in duties. on imports is without foundation, and would only have originated fm the minds of those who look at the tariff merely nea machine to be at all times used for some politi- eal purpose. No apprehensions need be entertained of any deficiency in the revenue. It would be mush better for the country at large if thore was a small epaual deficiency, for we then should not be draw- img from the channels of commerce the element that preserves them healthy. It was never intendedthat fhe tariff should lock up between twenty and thirty millions of spocie, when it was so maca wanted as a basis for ovr currency. If a re- @urtion of twenty per cers in the tariff will no @etribute the surplus revenue, let us have a forther reduction, until the Treasury is emptied of tie millions hich are now so greedily sought after by all the speculatirg politicians of tue day. This is five and a half per cent greater than the operating expenses of the roads in this Btate. We give in connection with the abovea table showing the net earnings of certain railroads on cost, with the market value of the stock of exch:— Nor Income oy RamRoaps—MARKET VALUE OF STOCK, Net Income on Uost. The Boston and Maine, with a net income on cost of lesa than one-quarter per cent more than the Reading, is selling at only two per cent die count, while the latter is selling at twenty-three per cent discount. The Boston and Wor-ester Ruil- road, with a net income of 7.38 per cent oncost, is scliing within seven and a half per cent of par. This great difference cannot exist long. The net inoome of a railroad on cost isthe only corr’ct criterion of its actual valueas an investment. In our calculation for net income on cost in the cese ofthe Reading Railroad, we have put down the current operating expenditures at sixty per cent, whereas it is without doubt the most cheaply ops: rated road in the country, on account of its favor- able grades and dumping faoilities. It is only by such comparisons that the real value of railroad af°che can be determined. ‘The annexé:| statement exhibits the capital, losses in 1864, and for the past five years, of each,ineur- ance company in Boston :— Boston Insvrance ComPanies, Name, Capital. 1804. “Jotal.5 Years. Our object in preparing the above has been to furnish to cur readers a plain and reliable statement of the acts under which the company was organized, and of ite exgavisation. That they bave proceeded legally in the adtuinis- tration of their affa‘rs, in the disposition and manage- ment of their property, and in the creation ana dispo- sition of the stock and mortgage bonds of the company. 4, That these lands, with road and all the proper- ty ef the company incident thereto, have been properly abd lsgally conveyed in trust for the benelt of the bondholders, who, upon breach of the condition of the trust, may become vested with all the rights and powers now enjoyed and exercised by the compsny. 5, The company were authorized to raise money for construction, eitner by sale of bonds, or stocks, or both, ox by sale of lands pursuant to the provisions of the trust deed. 6+ Subscribers to the stock, we cor Aassesementa to the par value of the any claims that may urine agai optional with the company to issue cost ef the read, and the fact that a large issue h: been made upon which assessments have been call- ed in, is additional security to the bondholders. Neither does there appear to be any doubt that all moneyn received by the company have been properly ap- pled to construction. It has been constructed in an unparalleled ehort period of time. Ita Cane are #0 soon to become a matter of record that an opinion given at the present time would be almost superfluous. We would state, however, that considering the hasto with which thé road has been constructed, and its immense extent, and the sparseness of the pcpulation upon acon- siderable portion of its line, the company and the public way probably be disappointed with the result of the first year’s operation of the road, which neith@ upon this, nor upon any similar work, should be taken as any sufi cient criterion of what its future earnings are to be. The present cost of the road cannot considered as extravagont, It has been constructed in view of an im- menee business, with corresponding accommodations upon all the termini and upon the line of the road.
