Buyers take hold with a great deal of spirit and c2n- fidence, in any way to emt sellers. The sales am>unt to about three thousand sbares daily. Erie Railroad stoek continues to rise gradually. It has already veached a dizzy height, but the bulls ase compelled Ble, It ie unfortunately confined to that locality. Outside there hos been no improvement for the bet ter. Among the commercial classes money is not much easier, trade not much better, aud the pros: Rect by no means satisfactory or encouraging. Stock gpeculatcrs in Wall street are, for the time, in fall feather. With an active demand among themselves, they have managed to run up prices among them- eelves, and the profit and loss is likely to be all mong themselves. Outeiders are availing then- selves of the advance in prices to realize, and the ‘mount of stock in the hands of brokers is therefore inezeasing. The bulla have hada pretty hard tims ef itduring the pastsix months, and they no doubt think it very wrong for outsiders to put their stocks nm the market when they are trying to put up prices. They thinkjoutsiders ought to help them by boldizg on to their stocks, When the railroad fancies were fifteen and twenty per cont below cur. rent rates, cutaiders were compelled to ho!d, or submit to enormous sacrifices; but now those who can get out without jogs are not disp sed to run the vik of another deciine, and therefore realize at once. The experience of outside stock apecuiators isnot of a character, just now, calculated to tempt them sgain into the purchase of railroad faacies, and whatever inflation may take place at the Stock Exchange will be entirely among the members of the board. The brokers have it all in their own bands, and when they can no longer carry the large Yead now on their shoulders, it will be dropped isto other hands, considerab/y reduced in its imaginary value. The quotations raled at 8} a 94 per cent premiam oa London, and 6f. 174 a 5f. 15 on Paris. ‘We announced a few days since that Messrs. Pago & Bacon would in asbort time resume payment. The receipt of alsrge amount of gold by the last steamer from California, over and above the amount of drafta drawn, with means realized from other sources, has placed the house in a position to re- kame at an early day. On or about the 15th of this month the house will again commence active ope- vations, we trust never sgain to be interrupted by the treachery of false friends, or by the exercise of power, placed uxfortunately in weak hands, for: purposes other than those justified by all honorabie men. We understand that it is the intention of ‘Messrs. Page & Bacon to establish branch of their house in this city. This may interfere materially with the finsncial operations af the only “ Ameri- can banking house” in New York, by farn'shing fa- cilities to the West, and other sectians of the coun- try, now derived from the concern alluded to. Louis, and Saa Francieco, the firm of Page & Bacon qill be inde pendent of all dangerous connections, and have at al] times fall control ot their enormous capital for their legitimate business. ‘The decline in the amount of United States reve- nue received during January, 1856, as compared with the same month of 1854, is two millions three bandred thousand dollars. The aggregate falling off since the end of October, when the reaction in the import trade began, is $6,000,000. Daring the firet seven months of the current fiscal year, the deoreare is $6,351,000. The premiums received by the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company during the year 1854, includiag there not marked off at the commencement, ware $5,266,046 01. The premiums marked off for the year ‘were $4,003,209 12. The net amount of lorses, re-in- surances, expenses, Ac., was $3,594,636 27. The pro- i of the company, for which certificates were granted, duricg the twelve and a half years ending January 1, 1954, were $5,464,199, of which $4,462,073 20 were redeemed in cash, leaving $1,002,116 80 remaining with the company. The seeets of the company amoant to $2 912,616 80; of which $297,995 are invested in stocks; $270,123 $1 in bonds and mortgages and real estate; and $44,491 23 in cash. The remainder consists of pro- minum notes, bills receivable, The board of trustece bave resolved to pay in‘erest on the oat standing certificates of profit at the rate of six per cent per annum, onthe 6th inst. ‘The Texas bill hse not received the support ex: pected. If the bill is lost, many jast claimants wit be severe sufferers. The withholding of the $5,000, 000 by the United States government, under the act of 1851, was to the creditors » great iojus- tice, as Texas (although acknowledging the debt) will not payin consequence.
