This is @ dull business for a man of Wise’s temperament, and hence it is no wonder that in default of somebody to fight, he hops upon your xeporter, attacks the New Youu Henan, and endeavors to mount its editor rough shod. The whig press of the Biate, tt is true, keep up an incessant fire of small arms upon him; they fill their papers with ridicule aad invec- tive; and, worse than all, they pepper him well with his own whig spseches. But this only irritates and exasper- ates bim, without giving him @ mark todriveat. He might as well attempt to carry on campaign against an army of mosquitoes. They are in his eyes, his ears, hia noee, before himand behind him, Why don’ his adver- saries, in sheer compassion, bring out a man to relieve poor Wive of the concentrated rage which bids fair to ‘burst him? T have alluded to his attack upon the reporter of the Naw Youx Heavy, Permit me to say that, except among his own political serving men, I have heard but one epinion of that attack. There is a universal feeling of imaignation and mortification at this unprovoked assault; universal, | mean, among those who are not besotted by party passic! prejudices. It is all ridiculous for his retainers to pretend that the fact of a gentleman being sent here from New York to report Wise’s speeches is } an imterference of New York in Virginia politics. Was ‘there ever anything more asinice? 1t was a compliment which Wise’s speschea did not deserve to send that re- porter, I bave no doubt that in fact it cid fatter his vanity, and that he called attention to it, in the first place, not to offer a rudeness to your reporter, but be- cause be desired it to be generally known that of such impportance was Henry A. Wise snd his speeches, that the Naw York Hxpatp had pent on a reporter way off to Virginia to proclaim his sayings and doings to the world. Vinaing that your reporter cid not receive this public notice with the complacency which your notice of him afforded, and imagining toat hig Petersburg speech hadn’t been correctly reported, he waxed wrothy, and im bis Charlotteville speech made au attack upon the re- ter which no one but his own licutenants pretend to Fores Wise ia about the last man on the earth to tell whether he is reported correctly or imself that his speech was without notes, doubtedly @ rambling, disconnected ha- rangue, in which neitler words nor ideas were pre- meditated, He don’t know himself what he said half as well av an intelligent reporter could in- ferm him, I have no doubt that he was astonished when he saw himself in print, and I suspect that it is not the first speech of his that astonished him when he saw it i int. One of by lk pmo Jouroals states porter that Wise declared ‘tersburg, an “infidel radical of demo racy,’ be only said an “infinite radical.” One word might bi Deda easily wnistohen for thie other, and, at y rate, what was toe difference, except that he ap- possibly a shade more nonsensical in the one case anim the other? An infinite radical, wa: it? Well, then, there are no bounds toHenry A. Wise’s radical fem. How does this sait the conservatives of the Vir- ginia democracy? What has become of the old junta, and their brother aristocrats, that they are going to al- Jew an infinite radical to become Governer of Virginia’? If they axe dead, it is enough to make their bones stir uneaaily in their graves; if they are alive, Wise will be apt to miss them in the next election. ‘The pinasees in Enquirer, commenti p len Jane oe res pondent’s card, speaks derisively of him as a “New York Yankee.’’ the Solon of that print in- form us who elected a w York Yankee’ Goyernor of Virginia? If it ia a crime and abomiaation to counte- mance a reporter becaurce he is a “New York Yaakee,’’ what sort of a crime and abomination is it to place a ‘New York Yankee”’ in the executive chair of the Old Dominion? Yet this is precisely what the democratic party of this commonwealth, under the lead of the Rich- mond Pnquiser, perpetrated at the last election, to the exclusion of a native born Virginian, George W. Sum. mers, whom these Simon Pures professed to regard as und upon the Southern question. When a ‘New York Yankee ” serves their turn, they are perfectly to set aside the most illustrious of Virginians for him. It ie a more heinous offence heir opinion to be avi whig than even a ‘New York Yankee, ” un- eso the aforesaid Yankee Lapp feng ‘to bea whig, when ‘the old boy himself would & beauty and ae saint in comperison. The misfortune of your ee ‘was not that be is a ‘‘ New York Yankes,’’ but that he has dared to cross the track of the idate of the State or democratic convention. | admire the effrontery of these ple, in talking about ‘‘New York Yankees,” with s ‘* New York Yankee’? Joe Johnson, at this very moment in the Governor’s house, on Governor the city of Richmond, where he les in state, ina grand side, with Picaoeratle paige Venlo, month ot May next. I have nothing to say against old Joe; I think none the worse of him for & New York Yan- kee. I think s good deal more of old man’s heart than I do of some Vi is that I wot of. ’Tis true oe eee a game, Bo Ven 700 eattstant executive ©! ene, wards a a instance of murder, and malateined the sight of self-defence on the part of I recollect aright, his master, old Joe showed a “lestle”’ too much Yankee- ism, but the old man has been punished for that by the open curses of the w! and the euppressed ones of the democrats, and has found ‘Jordan » hard road to travel.” His errors are of the head, not the beart—a aye, anda brave heart has tho old man un- Jochet; and loco foco and «New York Vankeo’? be be, I respect him a good deal more than I do iy of more pretension, who vapor, and hector and monopolize to themselves all the sense and all the chivalry, On this Yankee subject I shall have more to sey hereafter, but, in the meantime, woull take the liberty, as a Vi to suggest a fact, which can be tuiabilined’ by the cease of 1830 there are more that native born 6 living in New York than “New York Yankees” Hing in Virginie; and therefore justice, ‘as well as the an hospitality of the Virginia charac- ter, demand that those who do come among us shall be treated wes common courtesy. By lee aaikdehe And #0 they generally are, Mr. Editor—the ment of your and coarre jecring of the Richmond Enquirer contrary notwithstanding. And I have dwelt more at length upon this rubject, beca: if there is any point upon which the le of Virgi: are os ialiy eonaittve, it is thelr t and honored charac- tag for hospitality. “Stranger is @ sacred name” in Virginie, and therefore Mr. Wise, usually one of the most chivalrous of men, has inflicted s far wound upon the pride and sensibilities of his countrymen than upon the reporter of the Henatp, The Know Nothings continue to increase with o ra- pidity that is astounding. The outsiders have no con- ception of it, and the democratic leaders are utterly in- credulous, About thirty-five democrats were initiated in a single neighbor in this county a few — nothing aa yet is known as to the probable Know Noting for Governor.
