i HR id of 35 eh es A or. mice and dec! bwithstandi ib, to assume any rei of the Mother Church’s intcrest, to kwwp secret all her ageste’ councels, from to Oe : tdivulze, dlcestly or indirectly: & Miliser cn crenmetents wpnieesYOR et eaaENT A = orm, ‘bo keep ii bly; and do Sree tete ire Sa cies eee nt 3 im tes! iy and bicesed saccament of the Kuehari convent — —- ‘vate fram ibms toputations, sat asequivocly from these it 8, and unequivocally pronounced the article read by Mr. haaaperts purporting ‘Wo be the form of an oath ven by Catholics, to be a Ses forasry. He comtended that the Catholics of untry ‘were umder no political obligations to the Pope of that the statcment so frequently ut- ‘tered by political Native Americans, that the Pope held any awey over the minds of the Catholicsin this country, wo far as concerned their temporal condition, was base- ly false; that trom vefore the Revelution down to this moment there were none mere loyal to this government —there never has een, vor ever can be—than the Ca- tholica; and the three mi! of them in America would sacrifice their blood and their hivesas readily as any ether class to defend the liberties and to protect the in- - stitutions of the United States. And, continued Mr, O'K., should such « thing be possible that the Popo of Reme shoulc attempt 10 untertere in any of the of ‘this rnment, ke, for one, though no military =a) woub be among't the most forward and caxly to cul off his sacerdotalhead. We can follow him no further, ‘es our limite will not permit. With the most strict ai- lence did the very closely crowded auditory, as well as avery member of the House, listen to this ‘g: 10 def. nce of the religion of his earliest ancestors, hand down to himself. Mr. O’K. declared himself a firm democrat in every sense of the word, and never bad the least idea of departing trom that faith; but he would Rot binself how he should vote if the abuse of Wi . Seward was continued with the rancor which had thus far been evincod. ‘Other eden: addressed the House. Among them, Mesare. Rhodes, Ernans, Petty, and Gleason. ‘to-morrow morning the discussion will be resumed; and as things now bear an aspect, the question will be taken on Tues. morning, when not a vote will be found against it, the sesston, Mr. A. G. Thompson, of New York, joue to a question of privilege. He read from the "New Work Times of yesterday a short sentence to which he dbjected, as s:ating things which never occurred, aad lrawing inferences entirely unwarrantable as to his con- duct asone of the counsel for Mr, Seldon, whose sea’ was pontested. He concluded, by stating that he was will- to let the matter rest until to-morrow, waen, if no petraction or apology appears in the paper from the waiter, then he should move for his, expulsion from the Boor of the House. Mr. O’Keefe, as an associate counsel in the case, who was also implicated in the offensive article, states that he had volunteered his services in order to sesist bis friend in retaining hs seat, but emphatically Jenied having received any retainer fee, and would take pone for iy services in the case. Mr. Stevens also roi tnd said he was mentioned in the article read, and that he occupied the exact position with Mr. O'Keefe in this matter. The thought of a retainer—the thought of re- geiving pay for the assistance thue renderod, never en- tered his brain. What be jdid was no more than apy other member would do under like circum- < etapces, and that was for the sake of justice. Me cared not what action was taken in this ma’ though be thought that reporters who occupied places on the floor s) ould not abuse that. privilege by reore- sentirg members in a different light than that in which they really stiod. Nothing further was said or done. as. Whitney introduced this resolution in the Senate, vis, :—Resolved, That the Commissioners of Emigration be requested ‘o inform che Senate by what authority Thomas Dunlap has been, and is, recognized as a mem- Der of their Board, and ‘permitted to take part in its 8 It mien on the table on motion of Mr, Hopkins, It appears that Mr. Dunlap was nominated by ex-Gov- ernor beymuur as Commissioner, bu’ the Senate did aot seem to think Tom’s free soilism an) softness very es- him. The election for Senator comes off the next day, provided Ke., &c. The result of the csucus, supposed to elect Seward, has thrown the groggeries and rum holes into complete exhiliratioa, The friends of that gentleman are already eet Ceclaring that there shat no probibitory law uring the session. Mr. Coleman seems porfect- delighted to aay Let the temperance men take another look into the faces of the exuberant leaders of ‘the dominant party. ¥ ‘The New Jersey Prohibitery Liquor Law. ‘Trenton, Feb. 2, 1855. ‘The majority of the Senate’s committee to whom was referred the bill for the suppression o! intemperance, yesterday morn‘ng reported it back to the Senate with a number of amendments. The amendments relate principally to minor particulars, and do not affect the really vital features of the bill. The sections which provide the form of bond to be given by the agents ‘appointed to sell liquors, are stricken out, and provision mats thatall such bonds shall be in tae ususl form, without imposing extraordinary conliticns, The section person engaged in the unlawful 1g | quors from cerving as @ jurorin any case arising from this act, is slso stricken out, as are those parts of ths several eections which provide for instituting suite againrt offenders in the name of the township, city, borough, or town where the offence wball have been committed, and those other clauses which direct that all forfeitures of fines for violations shall go to the treasury of the township, city, &c., ia which they occur. The minority of the committtee also reported, a Dill providing for the holding of an election in November mext, whereat the sense of the people shail be taken in reference to the law of prohibition. They report no law, Jeaving that to be made by the next Legislature should the people cecide they want one. Romination of United States Senator for Wis- conain. Borraio, Fed. 2, 1855.
