NO. 382. NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1855. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Tuvsspar, Feb. 1—6 P. M. P At the first board this morning the market was heavy so far aa prices were concerned. Cumber- and, Nicaragua, Erle and Ha-lem were quite ac- tive, and the cash transactions were uausually large. Cumberland opened at a decline of 4 per cent, and closed at a decline of 14 percent, In” diana 5's feli off 1 per cent; Virginia 6's, 3; Lou- isiana 6’s, 1; New York Central Bond, }; Harlem, 4; Reading Railroad, 4; Panama Railroad, 1. Iili- nois Central Railroad advanced j per cent; Hudson Railroad, #; Chicago and Rock Island, 4; Erie Bonds, 1875, 3. Virginia 6’s and Indiana 5’s were Offered in large lots, and the market gave way under the pressure. The report of the Harlem Rail- road Company has created quite s sensation in the street. The community has been prepared for such developementa by the experience of the past twelve months, and it takes a good deal to get up an ex cisement among outsiders. Spe:ulators in railroad stocks are rather sensitive just nov, particularly holders and operators for a rise, and such an exposé Ye not at all calculated to help them much. The Girectors of the Harlem Rulroad Company— those who for years served with Mr. Schuyler— must feel particularly proud of their official du ties. They would be valuable memers of any board of direction, and must be sought after for their ad- mirable administrative qualities. Holiers of rail- goad stocks must have their confidence in such in- vestments seriously shaken by the facts presented in the report of the Harlem company. Not more than one-half of the story about all our railroad companies has been told. We are doing all in our power to bring out the true state of things, and bhave succeeied pretty weil thus far, bat have mot got through yet. A very large amount of Cumberland stock was pu’ on the market to-day, and it was, under the circumstances, wel! sustained. ‘The buyers are strong, and have both confidence ‘and ability enough to carry a good portion of the entire capital. There was quite a rash to the offises of the Erie Railroad Company today to get money ‘im exchange for income bonds. About one anda half millico of dollars was paid out for the princi- pal and interest on those presented. No doubi many feel mach relieved, and will look about for other investments. It is expected that about half a million more will be presented for payment. After the adjournment of the board, the following #aies of bonds and stocks were made by Albert H. Nicolay:— $21,000 New York Central RR. 6s. .int. added, 81108114 10,000 Newe’tle & Richm’d RR. 1st mort. int. ‘a lded 0 7,000 Northern Ind. RR. At the second board the market was thought tere ter, Mica'agua Transit went up 1 percent; Illinois Central Railroad, 4; Cumberland Coal, }; Reading Railroad, 4; /rie Ratlroad, §; Cleveland, Columbus | ard Cincinnati Railroad, 4; Harlem, 3. ‘The transactions at the Assistact Treasurer's of- five to-day were as fo lows:— | 2S os SIE Ot the receipts $1,000,000 was transferred from Bostcn, avd $50,000 trom Mobile. The sgent of Meears. Page, Bacon & Co., of San Francieco, received by the Nicaragua steamer, a éay or two since, the aum of six bundred and fifty thcusand dollars, priccipally in gold, and drawn drafts against it for only about three hucdred and fifty thousard doliars, leaving surplus of three hun- @red thousand dollars, This gives Messrs. Page & Bacon nesrly funds enough to resume psyment, aod we hear it is their intention to do so at an early ésy. This confirms the impression existing in this -e:mmunity that but for the treachery of their cor- respondents the house would not have been cbliged to euspend. We have made a good beginning. With the exception of Angust, the heaviest monta for im’ portations during the year was January, while the exporte, compared with other months, were limited. The United States Treasurer reports the net amount in the ‘treasury on the 29th of January as | twenty-one mitlions nine hundred and twelve thou- send seven hundred and six dollars. Bank making in the New Jersey Legis\ature seems to be in the ascendant. The Senate has just passed bills rechartering the Mouut Holly, Trenton, Med- ment of the capital of the Elizabethtown Bank. A bill was passed by the House supplementary to the charter of the Trenton Savings Fund Society. The first section authorizes the managers to invest money in the public stocks of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia, and in the public stocke or loans of the cities of Trenton, Newark, New York and Philadelphia. Only one third of the de- posits are to be invested in any of these stocks at any one time. The second section authorizes man- agers to loan temporarily on approved promissory notee, with such security as they may think safe, to an amount not exceeding $10,000. The third sec- tion allows the managers to take seven per cent, | and the fourth section allows them to take on depo sit money from the Court of Chancery.
