| : | | | ’ ci ey need ve MONKEY MARKET. oe ue > Sunpvay, Jan. 28-6 P. M. ner -2"M6 week just closed bas vot d« veloped enything new th ficancial effaire, ‘The strong exnibit made “(yp the banks on Monday last gave great eacou-age- {. ment to holders and speculators ia faacy stocks, ~ and the market became quite active su4 busyant. Later in the week advices of » more pacifis charac- ter were received from Earope, and as the props)il- isles cf peace strengthened, a firmer tone was in- ‘parted to the stock exchange, and the excitemsut epread through all circles. The arrival of Inter a0- counts fiom Californis, with @ million ani s qia:- ter of gold, helped aong the upward movement in prices. The bears, for a time, looked rather bie, and many bought in, under the impression ‘that the masket would run up beyond their reach “The apprehension was merely temporary. A few hours refiection destroyed large portion of the be ‘Hef in the establishment of peacafal relations be- ‘tween the belligerents in tke Crimea, and the markets became more quiet. Later in the week ‘Wwas announced that shipments of spe'ie to some extent would be wade by the South- steamer, and that exchange wou'd roo ‘up to specie shipping points. For a tima the effect of these rumors was rather unfavorable Dut the departure of the Baltic with only seventy - five thousand dollars in coin allayei the faara ot fancy stock speculators, and the market resumed its Duoyancy. On Friday it was reported that the Her. Mmsnp would take cut about a quarter of a million in ‘Goin, but it appears she carried out only twenty-two thousand dollars. All these things are in favor of speculators in stocks for a rise, bat prices have not sdvanced so much as even the bears anticipated. ‘The slight inflations have not been sustained, and there hae not been so much firmness on the part of Bok ere a8 circumstances warranted. For several 7 ‘we have had good news from every part of ) world. Rumors of peace from Europe, large re- ~. -@eipte of gold trom California, no disasters within *"“@ur’ own limits, active markets and steady pricea © "(bread for our most imp rtent staple exports, have ‘Deen smong the favorable events of the past month. Notwithstanding which, it appears impossible to give Much life or energy to commercial affairs at home, and spy atvempt at speculation, sinks after a spsemo ie abock or two, into inactivity and depression. The bavke will show a further increase in specie this week, with a larger discount line. ‘The exportations of specie from this port last week abd for the year was as annexed :— Smiruanty or Srxcte FRom Tux Port or New York. A. HL. Nioclsy’s regular semi-weekly suction sale ‘of stocks and bonds will take place on Mondsy next, ‘the 29th inst., at 124 o’clock, at the Merchants’ Ex- ange. ‘The letters of Mesers. The object Duncan, Sher man & Co. hed im pressing the application to re- ceive the letters 20 earnest!y has not yet appoared. ‘The correspondence was handed over anopened to Mr. Bacon, aa previcusly agreed upon. ‘The failure of a lsrge iron house was reported on Saturday. The saspension is attributed tothe re- turn of bills drawn on Messrs. Hetherington & Co., ef Londcn, whcse failure was reported by the las: steamer. The stock of the Can berlend Coal and Iron Com pany bas been for some days steadily buat quietly advancing, by the gradual absorption of the floatiag tok by a tte directors and their particalar friends. The Pisident not deeming it pradent to Jonger conceal from the stockholders the important facts known to him and the directors for some days, has iesued to the stocknoiders @ carefully worded and nor-commital circnlar, stating that a supposed valuable discovery had been made upon thsir pro- perty. We annex the circular :— Ovrice oy TH CUMBERLAND CoAL AND TRON ComPANy, New York, Jan. 26, 1855. Brr—Reports of the discovery of valuable beds of he company induced me to made, the result of which thus tock holders, that Ideom it By duty to apprise them a once of the fact, and shall be happy to communicate to such as may favor me with a call the information I on the subject. Your obedient servant, A. MEHAFFEY, President, Why did not the President come out a week ago with a frank and full statement of what he did know and what we have since learned to be true? Th in ten days sinee a committee of directors went tothe mines with a minerslogist aad an assayer of ores. They retarned three or four days since. It ‘was the duty of the President to have imparted to the stockholders all the information obtained im- me¢iately upon its receipt. A letter from the mines says that the directors admitted they had tested the ore in one vein of thirty feet, and that it wasa su- perior quality, black baned ore, contaluing iron, lime and carbon. It was discovered by a Mr. Win- ter, and bas created an excitement in that region greater than ever before Anown. Tis millions of dollars planted by English capitaiists in furnaces and iron works in the Camberiaud coal district will cme immedistely into play. So easily is the ore managed, s0 cheaply put into toe furnace, that pig metal can be placed at tide wate: for twelve doliars per ton.
