On ar- riving at the spot they found the laborers too strong for ‘thew; and, so far from being able to clear the track, the Girectors and their company, being unarmed, were obliged to beg permission to return to Brantford. RAILROAD ACCIDENT, DETENTION, ETC. ‘ Boston, Jan, 23, 1865. About ten o’clock last night as the express train from New York passed Clappville, the switch rod broke, ‘throwing the engine, tender, baggage and four passen- ger cars off the track, and ono car down a bank twenty- five feet. No one was injured. The cars were detained four hours. From further information in regard to the accident to ‘the express train, we learn that the engine passed over the break safely, and the tender went on to the side ‘track. The baggage car ran off the track and along the edge ef tke embankment. The first passenger car was thrown Jengthwise across the track. The second passenger car was thrown down the embankment some thirty feet, standing nearly perpendicular, the upper end breaking foto the forward part of the next car, which, with the Jast car, ran along the edge of the embankment, but, fortunately, did not go down, As soon as possible attempts were made ‘to rescue those in the falien car, and some were drawn eut through the windows. One man had his boot torn from bis foot, and other mirdculous escapes are recorded, ‘but beyond a few slight bruises, no one was hurt. There ‘were about 175 passengers in the train. Mr. Hobart, the eonductor, and Mr. Lovett, the superintendent of the House telegraph line, proceeded to Worcester, a distance ‘ef nine miles, on a hand car, and obtained another train with which the passengers arrived safe in Boston. Bold Attempt to Extort Money. Bostoy, Jan. 23, 1855. A siogular and daring attempt was made yesterday af- ‘ternoon to extort money from Mr. Enoch Train, at his weadence in Dorchester. The perpetrator, known as a writer for weekly papers and cheap periodicals, called on Mr, Train, who was confined to bis rcom by indisposi- tion, and drawirg a large knife, said—I bave come to you for money, and must have ft.”’ Mr. Train managed to escape from the room, and gave the intruder into the hands of the servants, who, after a severe resistance, handed him over to the police. He was taken before Justice Safford, and committed in default of bail for 92,500. He recently started a Know Nothing paper in New York, which soon died, and had borrowed $300 ‘from Mr. Train for the purpote of carrying it on, Philadeciphia Rowales in Baltimore. Baxrimons, Jan. 23, 1855, A gang of Philadelphia rowdies visited our city yes- terday, and last night roamed through the streets, making night hideous with their noise. On their way ‘they encountered a mad named Peter Sherlock, and beat him severely, This morning the friends of the injured man wet the party in a tavern near ‘the Holiday streat theatre, and a geueral fight ensued. One of the gang ‘was badly beaten during the row, E. W. Paul drew a pesvol and snov semes Lovdery, of this city, in the thigh; ‘the wourd is not serious. The whole party was finally arrested by the police. The following are the names of the Philadelphians:—James Cady, Joseph FE. McGee, George W. Canley, K. W. Paul.
