Of this sum the State has liquidated the amount of $227,- 864 60, leaving of the public debt’ the sam of $6,803,139, of which sam $1,763,139 is bearing two and abalf per cent interest, and the balance, to wit :~ $5,040,000 is bearing five per cent interest. The aforesaid rum of $227,864 50 having been paid by the State, usder the act of the General Assem- bly creating the Sinking Fand, these stocks remain on the books cf the sgercy, the interest credited and applied annually to the redu-tion cf the princi. pal of ihe public debt.
