at - NO. 4. bard gold—the renewal of Colt’s pateut. Measures of general national importance are freely bartered away. for a vote in favor of the Colt extension. The Central American question is the lion of the day. A New York capitalist—supposed to be George Law—is about to invest largely in the enterprise of central calo- nization, Twenty thousand muskets, and five hundred thousand ball cartridges, are to find immediate admis- sion into thts republic, \nat is to be, for the benefit of those concerned, ‘This musket importation, however, is denied by a mem- Der of the Central company, as the enterprise is based upon the principles of ‘peace and good will to all man- kind,” yet, notwithstanding this denial, the rumor has ‘its believers. Should Cushing’s oflice become vacant, it will be offered to J. Clemens, late United States Senator from Alabama. UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT. Wasuincron, Jao. 5 Nos. 38 and 39. From the State Capital, STRENGTH OF THE KNOW NOTHINGS—CHANOES OF SEWARD'S ELECTION—BILL RELATIVE TO CONVEY ANCE OF PROPERTY FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSE3— OFFICE SEBKBRS—GOVERNOR CLARK AND THE VA- @ANT SENATORSHIP, ETC., ETC. Atnary, Jan. 4, 1855, Upon analysing the vote given yesterday, upon the chaplain question, as tuken in the House, it appears Abat nineteen democrats and forty-four whigs comprise the Know Nothing strength in that body, making sixty- ‘three in all. Having recorded their votes and placed them- selves thus early on the record declaring themselves op- posed to Catholic prayers, will these forty-five whigs— will either of them falter when the time arrives to vote for a United States Senator? The democratic strength in the House is forty-one, which, added to the forty- four whig Know Nothings, makes an aggregate of eighty five members who now stand opposed to William H. Seward for re-election. In order to elect him, it will be necessary for twenty-two of these whig Know Nothings to cave. Will only twenty-five of them stand firm? ‘This morning Senator Putnam introduced a bill rela. tive to the conveyance of property for religious pur- poses. The Senator wanted it referred to a select com- mitteo to report upon. Mr. W. Clark thought a refer- ence to the Judiciary Committee would be most appro- priate. Some other Senator wanted to know the pur- port of the bill, when Mr. Putnam read it for informa- tion, when it was referred to # select committee. It is One of the greatest importance to mary thousand daily veaders of the Heratp, and it is therefore thought pro- per to lay a copy before them immediately. This is it:— AN ACT IN RELATION TO CONVEYANCES AND DEVISES OF PERSONAL AND REAL ESTATE, FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES, Sec. 1. No grant, conveyance, devise, or lease of per- sonal or real estate to, nor any trust of such personal or real estate for the benefit of any person and his auc- cessor or successors in any ecclesiastical office, shall vest any estate or interest in said person or his successor; no such grant, conveyance, devise, or lease to or for any such person by the designation of any such ‘office, «ball vest any estate or interest in any successor ef such person. But this seetion shall not be deemed to admit the validity of any such grant, conveyance, de- vise or lease heretofore made. Sec. 2. No grant, conveyance, devise, or lease of any real estate, Cedicated or appropriated, or intended to be dedicated ‘or appropriated to purposes of religious worship, for the use of any congregation or society, shall vest any right, title or inter-st in any persou or persons to whom such grant, conveyance, devise or lease May be made, unless the form shall be made to a corpo- organized according to the provisions of the laws of this State, under the act entitled “an act to provide for the incorporation of religious societies,” and the acts amendatory thereof, or under the act entitled ‘an act for the incorporation of societies to establish free schools,” passed April 13, 1854. feo. 3. Any real estate of the description named in nection second of this act, and which has been hereto- fore granted, devised or demised to any person or pe sons in any ecclesiastical office, by the designation of such office, or otherwise, shall be deemed to be bela tn trust for the benefit of the congrogation or society using the same, and shall, upon the death of the person or — in whom the title shall be vested at the time of @ passage of this act, vest in the religious corpora: ion by the congregation or religious society occupy- ing and enjoying such real estate as aforesaid, provi such corporation organized according to tue laws of this State shall be in existence at the time of the de- cease of the person or persons holding the title thereto. See. 4. In the event such Congregation or society shall not be incorporated as aforesaid andin that case the title of such real estate shall vest in the people of the State of New York, in the same manner and with ‘the same effect as if the ‘son holding the title tuereto had died intestate, ithout heirs capable of inherit- such real estate, er title to any real estate shall vest in the of the State of New York, under and by virtue of the last preceding section, it shall be the duty of the a General of the State of New York, and heis here- by authorized, upon his being satisfied of the due incor ration of the con; tion or society who have occupied and enjoyed auch meal estate for the pu of a8 worship, under and according to the provisions of the act first named in the second section of this act, and a production to him of a certified copy of the recorded certificate of incorporation, under the hand and official seal of the clerk of the county in whose Office the same is recorded, to a and convey such realestate, and all the right, title and interest of the people of the Stateof New York therein and thereto, to ania corporation, which shall thereupon oe vested with all the right, title and interest which became vested in ba ag virtue of the provisions of this act. Sec, 6. This act shali take effect immediately. It shows upon its face its object, and that is, to pre vent Catholic bishops from receiving presents or dona- tions in the name of their church, and vesting the title ‘to real estate in themselves personally. Whether it is @ Enow Notbing movement, and whether the Senator is @ Enow Nothing, is left for the consideration and re- flection of the reader. Th merous mire for office are informed that next Wednesday will be the first day when the Senate will take up consideration of appointments. The city is crammed full of applicants for office. are three canal appraisers to be appointed out of twenty itriotic gentlemen, who hav h done wonderful acts political matters. The pressure for harbor masters for New York city is very heavy, and the Governor's room is constantly fil with these very deserving Both houses have appointed committees on the tem- question. Some of the members desire imme. ite action, regardless of all other considerations ; but ‘the bill will be shuffled about between one house and the other, until the question of Senator is disposed of. If Governor Clark does not issue his proclamation very soon, directing an election to be held to fill the vacancy in the Twenty-ninth Senate district, he will soon have such a storm of Know Nothings about his ears as may produce considerable embarrassment. It is publicly alleged that he withholds calling the election until the ‘time shall have expired for tne elected Senator to vote upon the United States Senator question. uniform uprightness which the Governor manifested whilst occupy: other —_ stations, there is no rea- son to infer that he would #uiler himself to countenance such a contemptible trick. A few days will test it, and the Know Nothings have nothing to do but wait with patience, There is no pretence now that his Excellency ‘wan ever a Know Nothing, or that he attempted to enter the convention at Odd Fellows’ Hall.
