FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ao Y MARKET. Wrpwauspar, Dec. 27—6 P. M. Dariag the past two days the stook market has ‘Deen very active and very buoyant, bat there hus ‘been no speculation. The transactions have besa Confined almost entirely to the brokers, and the ad vance in prices is therefore likely to be ofa tempo- sery character. The basis is unsound. The imagi- Bary benefits derived from the arrival of a steamer with a million and s halt of California gold served to inflate the tancies ome to two per ceat. Under the impression that aa increase in the specie depart- ment of the banks would bring about an immediate expansion in the line of discounts, many brokera entered the market aa buyere. Av soon as it ap’ pears that there bas been no actual increase of specie, and that the California renittances are dis tributed among the peopie iv sina sams, there wili be as great a aesire to sell astnere has lately beea to buy. The fact of specie going into the banks -dces not make mones ary easier; aud we find oa the very day of an arrival of one and a half million of California gold and gold dust, there was a more active demand, at higher rates, than before noticed this season, Itis our belief that the operations of the bears have been the cause of the recent rise in fancy stocks as much as the remittances of gold from California, At the first board today Indiana 5's advanced 2 per cent and Missouri 6’s 3 per cent since the iast sale. Erie Income Bonds advanced 1 per cent; Illinois Ceatral Bonds, 3; New York Central Rausoac, 4; Harlem, 4; Reading Railroad, j. Canton Compauy fel: off } per cent; Hadson River Railroad, j; Galeua und Caicago Railroad, 1. At most all stocks improved on the opening prices. Railroad lowns of all the leading classes are freoly offered, aud there ure a good many sellers of ai secarities, who are evidently anxious to realiza the present advance. Erie lucome bonds soid to-day at an improvement of one per cent. Toe reports so fheely circulated relative to tae operations in Ea- Tope in the new loans of the E:le and Ovatral com- panies have no foundstion. No progress had beea madeia the way of new subscriptions for eitaer company. io London there was a greater desire to eell American railroad bonds than to add to their supply. In the way of exchanges, something of importance may be done. Holders of income bonds have exhibitec a disposition to replace tnem qita the new issue, but no terms have been fixed or agreed upon. In two weeks from to-day bids for the Erie loan will be opened at the company’s office, when we sball know the actual result of all the negotiations. As for the Central company, all is uncertainty. The probability is that its bonds will be retailed to its atookholders for past and prospec- tive dividends. The movement in Camberland is premature. We notice large purchases on time, buyer's option, at prices which cannot, under ex- isting circumstances, be maintained. Hariem is locking up. {here can be no doubt of iw being a g00d purchase at current rates. At the second board some ot tho fancies ad- veuced. New York Central Railroad wont up 1 per cent; Canton Company, j. Tho market slosed firm at our quo‘ations. The transactions at the Assistant Treasurer’s of- fice to-day were as follows:— Received , $147,220 00 82,343 96 3,722,193 21 y 195,902 32 The receipts of the Chicago and Mississippi R il- road Company for the second week in Deceml\er amounted to $31,423 62, The Firemen’s Insurance Company have decisred @ remi-anoual dividend of tive percent; the Pro vidence aud Worcester Railroad Company, three per cent; the Cleveland, Colambas and Ciacionati Railroad Company, five per cent. ‘The Traécamen’s Bank will pay to its stockhold- ers,'on the 20 of January next, the par value of its etock, aud a fival aividend of the profits, to th amount of forty-two per cent—the charter having expired, sed the business being about to be con tinued by an organizetion under the general law, ‘ander the name of ‘Tradesmea's Bank of the City of New Yo:k.”’ Subscribers to that stock are re quired to pay in their subscriptions, forty dollar per share on the full and twenty dollars on the scri» sto:k,om the 24 of January. The charter of the Mechanice’ Bank of this city will aleo exp're with the present year, and the busi- pees will be coatinued thereafter by an association in the same mame, under the general law. The par value cf the stock, anda final dividend of thirty- eight and eight-ninths per cent, will be paid to those stockholders wh> have not transferred their interest tothe new bank on the 8th January next. ‘The Irving Savings Institution has declared a semi-annual dividend on all deposits entitied there- to, at the rate of six per cent per annum. The redemption of the debt of the United States at the Treasury Department, Washington, for the week ending on Saturday, were as follows:—Loan of 1842, $135,300; loan of 1846, $135,800; loan of 1847, $567,050; loan of 1848, $12,200; Texan indem- Rity, $45,000—total, $885,350. The Boston stock market continues inactive, and prices depressed, particularly for railroad stocks. Boston and Maine was in active request at 93 bid; Providence holds firm at 60 bid; Worcester 88 bid, 88} asked; Concord, 604 asked; Eastern, 49 asked; Fitchburg, 75 bid; Old Colony, 743 asked; Portland and Seco, 90 bid; Western, 88 bid, 89 asked; Pro. vidence and Worcester, 80 bid, 85 asked; Wilming- ton 204 to 29%; Cheshire declined $1 per share; ‘Vermont Central, 12 bid, 1} asked, and Ogdensbarg 23 to 34. Copper stocks were dull, excepting Cop- per Fails, which is in good demand at 32 bid; Tol- tec is firm at 3 bid, while Forest was forced off at $5 per share, and Isle Royale $8; Minnesota is offered at $150 per ebare, and North American at $50.
