Ladder Company No. 11, beg leave to make a brief statement of facts in convection with the ing operations of some individual, who has been the mercantile community under the pre- tence of collecting subscriptions for the benetit of 1 company. We are impeiled to this course trom the ex- tent of those nefarious transactions, and an earnest de- sire to place ourselves right before the merchants of New York, who have ever exhibited towards tead- fast and liberal friendship. There is some p: , perbaps is now, and has been, (we know positively,) eperating down town for the last five or six weeks amongst business men and the friends of this organiza- tion, purporting to be authorizee to collect subserip- déons to assist the company in regard to the heavy ex- penses which they bave incurred in appropriately fur- sishing and fitting up their house. He is described as — Anon man about twenty years of age, of slim ild, with dark complexion, hair and eyes, possessed of ble a8 of tongue, an adept in what is termed ‘fire talk,” and seemingly intimately acquainted With the aitairs of the company. We have only to say here most emphatically, that we have authorised no suc! Person to act in our behalf, nor have we had any ageat acting for us for some time back, yet we are heartily worry to be obliged to say that, since the beginning of November this individual hay victimized the commu- nity to the extent of about $500—they supposing that ‘they were contributing to the assistance of a young and struggling company. As may be readily Supposed, we feel deeply grieved that such a gross swindle should have been perpetrated in our name, and earnestly assure the public that we shall xpare no pains and reasonable ex- man todiscover, and bring to condign punishment, the levi tow ruffian who has been thus plandering onr fel- citizens upon the strength of our character and standing as a component part of the Fire Department of this city. i here to remark that, on former occasions, tected in operating in alike dishonorable manner; col- Jecting money (which they appropriated to their own se,) ostensibly to sustain us, but which left us _ to bear the odium of possibly a’ supposed partici- pation in their nefarious conduct; and if not that, ‘at least to support the brunt of the indignation of swindled friends, and others who would gladly have sympathized with a young company in their en- deavors to secure a complete organization, and render them what they always will strive to be, a credit t themselves, the city and the department. The parties t whom we refer were respectively named; one of whom we did not prosecute to the full extent of the law, as perhaps some of our more prudent and exacting friend may bave supposed we should have done. In sparing him the extreme rigor of a lega} prosecution we were ac- ‘tuated by no other motives than a feeling of compassion for his mother, who, at the period of his detection was in an advanced stage of consumption, and his own reitera- ted promises that he would refund the moneys which he had fraudulently appropriated to his ewn parposes, but which up to the present period he has not done. ‘The other party collected some $160 in a simila- manner, but he was expelled the company, 4 also the department, in 1853, Whether either ef those parties has been carrying on a like eperation this tall we cannot positively assert; But we here most earnestly request that all those who may be applied to for subscriptions to aid the funds of our company, by the party described in the frat in- staneo, will Uring him to the office of any of the follow- ing naméd gentlemen, who have been swindled in the manner above described, and who bave positively inform- ea us cannot fail to identify the thief :—Messrs. Strahlheim & Co., 60 Broadway; and Lawrence, Stone & Co., 41 Brovlway, In conclusian y,¢ will observe that it is a source of youch gratification to us that this gross and contempti- ble fraud has not been perpetrated by any of the present members of the company; they have been all exonerated by several of the victimized merchants who favored us ith their presence at our last monthly meeting. The abdve named reward will be paid for the dutection of the swindling impostor; and any information left at the store of Mr. Sturgis, 59 Robinscn street, will be thankfully re- ceived.
