MONEY MARKET. Suspay, Nov. 12-8 P.M. The week just closed hae been one of excitement and disaster, ‘the stock market has beon intensely agitated, and holders have beca induced to make ruinous sacri- fices. An immense ainownt of stock has been forced out, A fora time the anxiety of all appeared to be to see who would get out first. About two months ago we had ic similar to thi8, but it gradnally passed awag, erators retw: We shall soon see the same Itis impoggible to * | account for these wild, frantic pa: Shrewd end sen- 2 | sible men hardly know what they are about for the time, and cell stocks at random, and make useless sacrifices, Most of the sellers of st & the low prices ruling, have been holders on long time at much higher rates and a few days since would not have made any abate- ment in prices to have made a eomplote clear out of all they had. The break down in the Western banks and bankers, and the fraudulent oper ons in California, have undoubtedly been the immediate cause of the de- pression in stocks; but these currency difficulties, aro generally short lived n no way connected with the real interests or prosperity of the country. It is a very extraordinary fact that ot the moment when the finan- cial embarrassmen{s under which we have labored so ong were about disappearing, and with every real elo- ment of prosperity rapidly acquiring a sound, healthy, and active coMition, this great depreciation in stock avilies has been realized. For the past six months the drain of specie hos been very great, and-our banks have found it dificult to preservr their average amount of specie. We have becn, until very recontly, importing -extensively, while our great staple exports have been dormant in our homo markets, Owr natural resources have not been available, and we have been compelled to part with our specie. A change has come over that state of things, and we are upon the eve of better times, The importations haye been reduced to very low points, our staple products are coming forward rapidly, and will fad good markets abroad, at good prices. We hava been for months liquidating old liabilities and forming no new ones. Contraction has been going on rapidly. The banks havea discount line at this moment upwards of eight millions loss than it was six weeks since, and credits outside of the banks have been reduced a more “fapid rate. Ail classes of mershants iy avoid new engagements, with a determination to reduce their operations to the most Umited movement. Ii is impossible for these things to goon for any longth of time without strengthening the position of every ae- tive man in the community, and without reducing bust- ess to such a condition that will require comparatively siiall amount of capital to manage. There is no doubt but that the end folly of the past few years have assments and he remedy resorted to would have been sufficient to re- moye them, We think it has been applied in time to prevent a wide «1 believe that our re are ample to ¢: us from the dangers tone threatene » most important inter- 11 is well known that we have over taken a conser- yative course in commercial and financial matters, and have at all times endeavored to restrain the expansion of credits and inflation of prices, We have frequently pointed out the dangers attending speculation and oxtra- vagance, and predicted rosults similar to those which have been realized. All of our anticipations relative to the effect of the expansions in the currency, andin ereitits generally, have been brought about.
