In this instance, however, the work- lug of the spoils policy of ti administration, the Nebraska bill, and the temperance question, which, upon the acceptagbe or rojection of the prinelple of the Maine liquor law is made a dizect iesue before the people, render all the resulte of all elections heretofore utterly ase- less for any satisfactory calculations or -coa- aud where they do not seem to us confurmable to tbe rules of common sense and equity, to express a candid opinion thereon. Acting upon this principle, we have watched the whole pro ceedings in the ease of this jury with great re gret. How-ceme Mr. George Wellman Wright on the jury at all? How did it happen thut his relationship to the prisoner, which was known to so many, was a secret trom the prosecuting offic r, whose business it was to find out “all about” the ury? Will it have this effect in the Graham case? or can the con- sent of parties supersede the law ? Suppose, in short, that Mr. Graham is ac- quitted: how many people wi'l believe that he had a legal trial, and that the death of Loring upon the putlic, have lately become a bo:e, aud wehave often had cocasion to anima“vert upon the too common pract’ce of charlatans to infict upon enc’ unlucky inai- viduals as may bs stduced to their has, o'd, stale dia- tribes, re-hasbed from encyclopedias and bcoks of travel. The Board of Aldermen held their usual meeting last evening, The proceedings, which were of no general interest, terminated in a discussion of the Reyrolds offal contract, the Board finally refusing $0 take from the table for consideration the report of the committee on that subject. _ The Board of Counciimen was in vession last eve- ning, end transacted a large au: of ordinary routine business. Another effort was made to cx- tend the hospitalities of the city to the officers o° the French men-of-war now ia our habor, but the propositicn, ander the rules of the Board, was laid on the ‘able. It is very probable that bo peranee question, the reciprocity treaty, and the Koow Nothings, will al contribute to efrengteen the whigs upon the Governor, the Legislature end the Congressmen. Doubtiess it will be an unexpected result to the spoils de- mocrsoy if they escape a total rout “trom Dao to Bersheba.’” In Ohio, ever since the Van Buren free soil movement of 1844, the whigs, from the loss of their free soil allies, have been ina powerless rr At the election for Governor in 1s, democratic candidate polled 147,663 votes, the whigs &5,820, and the free soilers 50,440, The Nebraska bill has changed the hoot to the other leg again, and there has taken place jn Ohio, we suspect, a sufficient fusing of the frte soilers and whigs to leave the demo- crats nowhere in the aggregate vote. In the preseyt Congress the State delegation of the House stands, twelve democrats, seven whigs, and two free soilers. In the election to-day the tables may be reversed. The hardest fight of the democrats will be for the re-election of Olds, in the Columbus district, a leading Ne. braska man; but the current against bim is very strong and heavy, The Know Nothings, in some districts, expecially Cincinnati, will be very apt to cut in, and make as clean a job of the wrangling democracy as they lately (14 in San Francisco. In Indiana the whigs, since the decline and fall of ye ‘Tippecanoe and Ty ler teo, have been at a very low figure. Of a Congres- sional delegation of eleven mombers in the House, (he party have but a solitary member. But weehould not be at all surprised if this doy’s election in Indiana, from the geaeral gro nd to go before the Court of Appeals, against his own consent: and again, the infor- mality would cbviously weigh heavily in the scale should the case be transmitted to the Governor for 2 pardon. Altogether this is another jury trial with which the public have grest reason to be dis- satisfied. In many cases recently, the ends of just.ce have been defeated by the bungling of counee] in empannelling juries, and the perver- sity or fraud of interested jurors. We trust that the final issue of the Graham case will not furnish the opponents of jury trials with ano- ther argument. British Imwrorants in 1853—Intso Rewrt- TANCES FROM THE Usitep Srates.—From the report of the British Commissioners of Emigra- tion, which has just been published, several in- teresting fucts may be gathered. The total emigration from the United Kingdom during the year 1853 was 329,937, nearly 40,000 less than that of the previous year. The bulk of the decrease was in the em‘gration to Austra. lia: the « mivration to this country having only tallen off 15,376. Notwithstanding this reduc- tion the emigration of 1853 exceeds the average of the seven previous years by come 26,000 beads. The chief decline has bees : the emi gration from Ireland. In 1849, th» :.:. aber of persons who lvit Ireland for a happier home was estimated at 218,842, It declined next year to 213,649; rose again in 1851 to 254,537; fell off to 224,997 in 1852; and is stated not to bave exceeded 199,392 in 1853, W® may take it for granted that the decline still coatinuss; for, during the first quarter of the present year, the tolal em'gration from the United Kingdom We expect from hima profound and acuto analveis of the facts which bear npon one of the most important epochs in the history of the rorld.
