At the opening prices were firm for a time at yesterday's rater, afterwards they slightly deolined, and at the close showed signs of an impreve- ment. Reading was the Grmest railroad ftock on the st to-day, snd the trausactions were very large. Within the past few days the stock market his wonder- fully improved in tone. The mcvements now are more regular, and the operations oa tiwe, seVer’s and bayor’s option, do net exhibit these extremes we have se recent. ly recorded. Am eighth or ® quarter per osat is now about the difference between cash aales aad those on sixty days, buyer's or seller’s option This shows the abundance and cheapmess of money in Wall street om suoh seourities, and is rather an encouraging feature. After the adjournment of the Soard tne following sales ‘of stocks and bonds were ma‘e at suction by Simeon Draper — Parker Veia Steamship Co, Jat mor. int. a4..86 bagel Miede Ba. ooavertibies, da. aK do = Wells, Fargo & Co ’s Ex; 100 do Chicago and Kook Twenty: Give thousand dollars, in ten dollar notes of the Mechanics’ Bank, Memphis, Tenn., were stolen from the room of the President of the Bank on the 16th inst. | ‘They are numbered from 1 to 1,250, inclusive, and dated July 4, 1864, with » large blue X engraved on the lower side between the vignettes. The President says tat nove of the notes of theabove date, mark and denomins- | tion have been put in circulation by the dank, and will pot bepaid. He further states that he has recovered Tre corstruction of railroads during the past three or ur years is @ fair iustration of the reckless, heedless minnee in which the people of this country plunge iato | | tny new enterprise, They alaiost invariably over do it | | 4! first, and a reaction takes place, which dose not pass off for years. We dash so biiadly into the developement © any new element of wealth, that the cost ia rarely counted and the expenditures leave the whole commani- ty involved in financial embsrrassments of a serious cha- rector. The effect of all thia is frequently visible for years after, andit is only when the country in its na- tural progress requires there works of internal improve- ment, that parties interested derive any benefit from them. We are now in that rondition. Forasveral years past we have been engaged ia constructing railroads, and they have been exienced faster than the actual ‘wants of commerce required We stretcned to the ut most our credit bot. at home and abroad, and attract ed capital from other brenches of industry to thoir in- | jury. We were altogether too fast; and before the pub lic were really aware of the dangers surrounding them, there came a collapse in credi:, andall farther progress wasat once arrested. Rai’rosd bonds issued by new companies, could not be soli at any price. Almost in a day the auction sales of such securities were suspended, ‘This was the frat p towards reform and recupera- tion, ‘The market being relieved from the sup: ply of new bonds, the old issues were not so burdensome, and whatever demard existed for perma- ment investment, absorbed ro much of a fixed quantity. The amount pressing for sale has, therefore, been gra- dually reduced; and now that the demand from the ether side has revived with a great deal of force, we may logs for a rapid cecresse in railroad bonds offered for sale inthis market. While this is going ou our rail- roads will be improving in productiveness from thyir own natural resources, and from the absence of competi- | tor lines. This pause in railroad enterprise will be of vast benefit to all the oli companies in full and active operation, and give them inore strength to compete hereafter with whatever rival ines may be constricted. The prircipal difficulty those interested in railroads have to contend sgeinst is competition, and we hava always been apprehensive that this would be carried to auch an extent as te materially reduce the productive- ness of ailsuch investments, With a moderate increase fn these valaable works of internal improvement, and with judicious selections for the location of new routes, the difficulty alluded te ean be moderated, if not entire- ly removed. We have lately learned many valuable | lessons in railroad mamagement, and let us hove that the | future may bring the reward. Expenditures om old Toads have, in a great measure, ceased, and the probabi lity is thet future outlays will be more in accordance with actual requirements for profitable operations than hey have been, The expesience gained appears #0 for to have been dearly purchase}, but it may at some ‘ature time appear cheap at tem times the cost.
