Few cvunsel in attendance, Woman Founp 1x THe Woops.—A woman, up- wards of fifty years of age, was fonnd about sevonty or eighty miles above the mouth of the Oconto river, in the early part of last wook She seams to be partially crazed, and can give no intelligence as to where she be- longs. She has probably been wandering in the woods for weeks. She says that her maiden name was Mary Ann Kingsland ; that when a child she lived in the city of New York ; went from there to Genesee county, where she went to school until she was eighteen years old; she there married a man by the name of Crosby, who lived fa Canade, who died soon afterwards ; that she camo next to Iinois and married a Mr. James Day, an epgineer on an Ohio river steamboat. Up to thie point she relates her histcry very clearly, but all after is confused, and it cannot be ascertained where she belongs or how she came to stray into the woods, except that she has been op Wolf river, and says something bout hunting for roots and herbs. It i ble that she wandered from there to where she was don the Oconto It was the intention to bring her here.—Green Bay (Wisconsin) Advocate, Sept. 10. The stock market opened quite buoyant this morning, and there wes more activity than we have noticed for some days. At the first board New York Central bonds advanced 1 per cent ; Delaware and Hudson, 1 ; Nicara” gua Transit, 3; ; Cumberland Coal, { ; New York Cen* tral Railroad, 34 ; Harlem Railroad, %; Erie Railroad, 34 ; Reading Railroad, 3. Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Ceclined 3; per cent ; Michigan Central Railroad, {. Gold Hill was in demand to day, in anticipation doubtless of | the dividend. Erie and Reading were the most promi- nent stocks on the list to day. There is great eace in tho money market, and the banks find it difficult to make al! the loans they want on call. It would be better for the commupity if it was found even more difficult to make such loans. Money was freely offered to-day in the street at five per cent, and refused at that. Tho two California steamers have added two and a quarter mil- lions to our supply of bullion and coin, and we think it can be safely calculated upon that our exports, from this time out, will not be beyond our receipts from San Francisco—leaving our banks with about thirteea mil- lions in hand, which is an excess of two millions over the average We do not see how we can avoid having an casy money market, There has been somuch contraction in credit, such a general liquilation, thst the demand for money has become much reduced. It is anticipated by our leading banking houses that bofore the lapse of many weeks the rate of interest in England | will be materially reduced. If ao it will adi to the ease in financial affairs on this side, ard strengthen our posi- tion very much. The investment of foreign capital in American securities is pregressing more rapidly than ia generally anticipated, and the effect here must be more favorable than ever before, from the fact that itis steadily reducing our supply. Until within the past few rMnths the manufacture of railroad bonds was at the | rate of about a million per week, and the market was completely flooded with them. They were forced ont through suction houses ani by all sorts of financtering ‘The demand from Europe served to intrease the supply nstead of reducing it, and there appearei to be no end t the new companies issuing railroad bonds. Tho market was gluited, and the value seriously deprestate1 The business was over doneand had reached its height That expose put and we have since been placing the old issues, | The weight upen this market was at one time onor- | which ‘The silks be'onging to the latter firm have bien | covers’, part here and port on the way to Cinciunati mous, and was one among the many other thiogs breught about ths collapse. We are now entering upon a new phase in this business, The deman! for railroad bonds from Furope fs steadily and rapidly re- Gueing our supply. In the absence of any new issues the purchases ere of the old, and before the lapse of many months our market must be very much relieved of the burden pressing upon it in the’shape of railroad bonds. With a constant demand from now sources, and no new supply, the distribution cannot be otherwise than of such a character as to have the most favorable effect upon our local finances. As our own capital which is now invested in these securities becomes releasod it will Gnd employment in other channels, and tend to the developement of other resources, That we have pro- gressed too rapidly in the construction of railroads there is very little doubt, but s year or two of inactivity will do away with the evil, and re:tore most of the capital to thore chanrels from which it was extracted. There is the otper side of the Atlantic a growing desire to in- vest their capital in securities beariog high rates of in- terest ; consequently they are becoming less satis- fied with three and three and a balf percent. It is to this feeling that we attribute the attention of foreign capitalists to our stock and bonded sesurities. At the second board there was comparatively little doing and prices were not so firm. Erie Railroad fell off 4 per cent; Harlem +; ; Nicaragua Transit 4%. The transactions were too limited to denote any dsciled move ment. .Ait. A.
