It would be refreshing to see the fashionsble world practising a little economy for once, end appearances indicate that we are to be treated to such « luxury. TRIAL TRIP OF THE BTSAMBHIP JEWESS. ‘The steamship Jeweas, intended to trade from. ‘York to Nassna, N.P., and thence to Hisvana and Key Weet, made her trial trip yesterday, and started trom the foot of Beach street, North river, at pier No. 27, in order to test her speed and the working of her machinery. ‘The Jewesn ie a very fine steamer, of about one ‘#onsand tons burthen, and of two hundred and fif- teen feet in length, twenty-eight feet inbreadth and a depth of seventeen feet. She |\asone beam engine ‘with a cylinder of forty-six inches in diameter and ‘wwelve-and-a-half feet atroke of piston. The Jewess hes magnificent accommodations for two hundred and fifty passengers in staterooms, and large and well ventilated berths for other passengers, ‘When the Jewess sailed yesterday noon, she cast off in some minutes after the Cabawba, which left for Havans, and, although with machinery entire- Jy new, and, in consequence, stiff, she steamed to ten miles south of Sandy Hook, im almost as good ‘time as the msi! vessel made. During this time, ‘the Jewexs made her course in an even and steady manner, Had she had snything in her to cause her wheels to eatch the water, with a good hol, it ‘was considered that she would have passed the Ca- hawba in twenty minutes after leaving the foot o Beach street. As it is expected that the Jewess will accomplish the passage between New York and Nassau, N. P., in five days at most, it is hoped ‘that she will receive that patronage to which her splendid run of yesterday entitles her, and the weelprocal trade between this city and such produc- tive vegetable growing islands demands. This steamship will be a pioneer over the Bahama Banks, and in our present relations with the mother coun. twy, it is presamed that the Postmaster General will avail himself of this speedy and likely uninterrupted mode of transit of the mails, whilst the agricultur- _iete and gardeners of the stormy islands will find a eorresponding profit in the conveyance of the pro- duct of their land to a ready and profitable market. In this trade the Jewess will be commanded by Captain James T..Wright, of whom it is unne- eessary to speak, assisted by Thurston N. Taylor as fisat officer, and Mr. David Vollock as en- gimeer. Under this direction the Jewess will sal from foot of Beach street at noon en the first of August, as advertised. On board of the Jewess, yesterday, there were General Stryker, the Hon. Judge Strowbridge, Mr. @ooke of the Bahama Legislature, Colonel Woolley, Mr., Ward of Kentucky, Mr. R. Dean, member of the Maryland bar, and about one hundred other gentlemen. All the above were farnished with re- freshments, from the first hour of going on deck, by My. Peter W. Downing, of No. 3 Broad street, who, with his attentive waiters, furnished an excellent @nner when the steamer;was returning, and in hia attention to his guests Mr. P. W. Downing seemed ‘to be entirely unconscious of the tremendous explo- aive news, expected from Europe by next steamer, ef the combat between Prince John Van Buren and Daniel B. Sickles, the secretary of our legation at London.
